Here’s what you are missing:

-The Isles are playing far, far better hockey right now.
-The Isles can afford to offer JT more money and an 8th year of contract.
-Tavares is going to have more chemistry with his own team than people he’s played with on Team Canada.
-The Isles offense is firing on all cylinders, and while Tavares has a lot to do with it, the emergence of Mat Barzal means Tavares knows he no longer has to carry the team to succeed.
-The Isles have a deep prospect system, ensuring they will receive younv reinforcements for years to come. The Habs have a few good pieces, but their prospect pool will run dry much, much quicker than NYI’s.

Part of good cap management for future years is when to say no. Cole for 6 years is just so wasteful. How much mediocrity can the Habs for years but up with if average to poor players just burn the cap away.
