Melnyk wants Ryan out, so you can trade them a worse player as a cap dump as long as their cap is lower than Ryan's.
The idea: You need wingers. Badly. Take a bet that Ryan can revive his career on McDavid's wing. Ryan still has his skill, he can skate, his contract is shorter, and you can buyout his contract easier (and cheaper) if it doesn't work out.

Ryan recovers to a 40-50 point guy on McDavids wing, spends minimal time on IR. Still overpaid but you turned one of the leagues worst contracts into a workable player, and started to address one of the teams large problems.

So what does this all mean? For Ottawa, they can buy him out or play him or whatever, and as they are not really affected by the cap, they will be fine. The benefit to them is a cheaper contract.
For Edmonton if the worst comes to worst and Ryan does not work out, you can by him out for cheaper than you can get Lucic for, at the cost of a slightly higher penalty down the road than Lucic. This allows Edmonton to actually build a team around McDavid, even if Ryan flops.
Edit: you can also get Nurse on a long term deal, which is a plus.
I don't think Ottawa will get anything done until minutes before the trade deadline, because Melnyk will intervene and ruin anything promising for the future.

That is the only hiccup. I think its about an even shot if they allow Dorion / stars on the sens to convince him to come. "Help repair the room, be a big leader, rebound next year" etc.

I think putting him with Drai would be beneficial for both players. Drai is an extremely underrated playmaker & is a fantastic passer. Imagine what he could do with a shooter like Ryan
