Retain on Brett because it's a 1 year deal to make the cap work, and the Devils would want someone to replace the roster spot opened by Holtz. It's hard for Gibson to be successful when he's been playing behind some of the worst defenses in NHL history over the last 4 years. Devils have one of the best defenses in the NHL, I'd bet on him to return to form and play like the flashes he continues to show in Anaheim. Holtz has struggled for a couple years now and could use a change of scenery, a struggling prospect, a third and players to make the money work is a fair return for a goalie who's struggled but it still held in high regard by players and front offices around the league.

I don't think so.
It's not about cap space, both Henrique is a UFA who probably gets traded anyways. He's struggled greatly over the last couple years so I doubt he's worth more than a third. All of the retention slots are on players who's contracts expire this year, so I'm not sure what the fuss is about.

On his most recent 32 Thoughts Podcast, Elliot Friedman reported that Vancouver is actively trying to get rid of Garland because they want to free up that 5 million for future free agency, and that in return they want a RHD on a 1 year deal making similar or less money. Lyubushkin fits all of those requirements. It's not about getting a fair return or upgrading the team, just getting rid of a contract.
