Fitz was on Murphy's Hockey Law podcast:

"[Schmid]'s gonna get a chance to run with Vitek at the start of the year and see where that goes"

Thinks Holtz can be a "pillar player" like Bratt, Jack, Hischier

Thinks Bahl can handle Graves' defensive assignments and Luke can replace Severson's offense

Honestly, NJD just need .905-.910 sv% to contend. Both these goalies have that potential. I mean, having Helly wouldn't hurt, but not for Nemec and Mercer lmao.

Fitzy has been amazingly consistent in his public commentary. And usually does what he says he is going to do.

Its Vanecek/Schmid show for 2023-24. Did he say anything about depth? I wonder if they are considering a #3 for Utica since Daws is out for a while. I think that is the hole to fill for us in net. We will probably be fine, but it would be nice to have a legit #3.

I think the biggest misconception is that NJD management is somehow disappointed in Holtz. Fitzy and others have often expressed similar optimism. And during the season last year, Brunette invested tons of time with him one-on-one while he was routinely scratched (if they were making him available for trade, he would have been in AHL building tape, padding the stats...and not drawing so much of the coaches attention).

Over the summer, he had said something similar about Bahl replacing Graves minutes. That was after Graves departed and before Bahl had extended, so I though at time he could be up for longer-term deal (like Whitecloud or even Lauzon type extension.

Thanks for posting

Problem with that is it won't get you where you want to go in the playoffs. Now I'm saying the trade should be done. However, you'll need more than.905-.910 goaltending if you want to be the last man standing.

I don't remember him saying anything about goalie depth, but he did comment on how insane our 7 goalie season was and how volatile the position is. Obviously now that we're a contender, he would make necessary moves if a goalie went down long term. Gillies and Hammond were only because we weren't trying to compete so it didn't matter.

He said all we've needed to be a playoff team was to be average in net, and with above average goaltending we had 112 points. He specifically said though that there's no way of knowing how good our goalies will be, and that there are only five or six consistently elite goalies.

I'm confident that he would trade for an elite goalie if the opportunity presented itself, but he also talked a lot about how Shero taught him to be patient and shrewd with trades. I think if we added, say, Hellebuyck at the deadline, it would play out similarly to Meier.
