Description
Let's assume that Brad Treliving persuades Ilya Samsonov to accept what I consider to be below-market money on his next contract. I still don't understand where he's going with the signings of Klingberg and Domi. Domi will probably turn out well, but without Klingberg, Toronto would have no cap concerns at all and $1.9 million to spend on that #3 RhD slot. Perhaps his plan is to trade T. J. Brodie? Or not buy out Murray at all, trading him at a loss and then divesting the Maple Leafs of Jarnkrok? I find it hard to come up with any other realistic scenarios. (I don't really believe that he's thinking of trading William Nylander, no matter what Paul Bissonnette says.)

I'm sure that Treliving has something in mind because there are subtle indications that he's smarter than I am and that he knows more about hockey than I do. I can't wait to see (1) what he does about Matt Murray, (2) what he does about Ilya Samsonov, and (3) what he does about the $2.2 million cap overage.

Murray and Muzzin go to LTIR thats what im feeling is gonna happen

Muzzin for neck and Murray for a nagging undisclosed injury

Timmins gets traded or sent down

That gives them enough cap to give Samsonov 3-3.4m

As lets be real if they wanted to move Murray why not do what they did last year (Mrazek + 1st for 2nd)

CHI wanted another 1st and Murray's buyout wouldnt have hurt them much. Seems like Mike Smith something's up

As much as I think it would be stupid to do so, they’re likely going to trade Brodie. Samsonov opting for arbitration opens another buyout window for Murray, so there’s an option as well if they have no takers via trade.

I am curious as to who’s going to play defence for this team though, as none of their recent additions are known for that. Treliving is also falling down the same rabbit hole the Penguins and Rangers found themselves in with Reaves. It’s an interesting scenario that is likely going to take a surprising turn one way or another.

It's been an odd off season for sure. Trading Willy is right out of the question, he's too good and all you'll end up doing is wishing you had him still because you aren't replacing his offence with anyone you are getting back in a trade. I don't think you are going to get a legit #1 back for him.

Murray will be dealt and I think it will be shocking when it doesn't cost the leafs an arm and a leg to do so. After that the roster is workable.

Personally I would move Brodie but only if it's for a strong defensive defenceman who is far more physical than Brodie. He's still a good player no question and would be a good partner for Klingberg but then you need a partner for Rielly.

The Domi signing doesn't make any sense to me, sure he adds some after the whistle stuff that helps in the playoffs but he's horrible defensively so he doesn't strike me as a Keefe player. Klingberg on the other hand I am fine with. He's tailor made for Keefe's puck possession system and I think will bounce back in a big way.

What happens next is going to be interesting, hopefully Murray gets moved and then Maybe Brodie gets moved to get a more physical defenceman to replace him. Then you see what you can do at the deadline. I really hope for a Muzzin type addition but that won't come until the deadline.

Move Murray and then see how the chips fall.

No point in risking Timmins when you can likely afford him right away after Muzzin goes on LTIR. Maybe send Knies down in a paper transaction along with Robertson (both are waiver exempt) and you are fine.

Yeah the Reaves signing is not good. But he does give them the toughest guy in the league so that's good.
