Description
A slightly fanciful construction based upon a trade, a free-agent signing and the idea that Adam Fantilli would leave college and come straight into the NHL. (The other two trades are so well-known that they are almost expected by now.)

The amounts of the Zegras and Terry extensions are unimportant because there's money in the bank and lots of adjustments to this roster can be made to reduce cap, so I don't want to hear any pointless carping on that subject.

As mentioned above, this assumes that Adam Fantilli will leave the University of Michigan and go right onto the main roster. I've put veterans on either side of him, both of whom will take face-offs in the d-zone until he proves his expertise in that area.

This team has some softness at RW whether Fantilli is on the roster or not, so I've signed a middle-value free agent to address that. Both Jesper Fast and Oscar Sundqvist seem at the right age and price point for the productivity I would like from that slot. I think that either would be a good addition, both short-term and long-term, for the Ducks. (Their availability, and their assumed desire to sign with Anaheim, might be the most fanciful idea in this ACGM.)

I think that management is willing to give Max Comtois one more chance to prove himself an NHL power forward, so I've given him his Qualifying Offer and signed him to a one-year deal. But Anaheim may well let him walk this summer.

Guys shown on the Taxi Squad are those players who would fill the #3RW slot without the free-agent signing.

The major move is, of course, the Colorado trade. I've heard and seen rumors that the Avalanche might be willing to move Sam Girard, for a variety of reasons. I think that he would be a good acquisition both short-term (as Cam Fowler's partner) and long-term (on the left side as Jackson LaCombe, Pavel Mintyukov and/or Olen Zellweger work themselves into positions of responsibility. (Projected future additions to the defense are shown on the LTIR list.) I might be off -- maybe way off -- on his trade value; the respected Avs authorities I recognize won't be shy to tell us.

Signings off the Reserve List are those three youngsters whose rights expire next summer, and are projected to make the main roster at some point.

Sam Carrick, Brett Leason, Benoit-Olivier Groulx, Simon Benoit, Colton White and Olle Eriksson Ek are not waivers-exempt this coming season, so that might have an effect on the makeup of the eventual roster (including San Diego's, in the last instance).

With $20 million coming off the books in 2024 and four roster slots opening up, there will be plenty of options available to support the developing prospects with quality veteran additions and/or make promotions from San Diego.

It's hard to imagine that they will sign a bottom six UFA in order to sit McGinn and Jones in the press box. To bring a bottom 6 guy some one has to leave IMO, whether that is Comtois or someone else (Silfverberg buyout).

What is the point of Myers when you are sitting at 81M on the cap? I will never understand putting him on the Ducks roster and giving Vancouver 6M in cap space to improve their team. His on ice value is 1-2M which would match his after-bonus salary. The same would be said about any other 1-2M UFA defenseman. Or pry a more valuable guy away from some other team like Ceci. You'd pay Ceci triple but he's worth the extra salary (at half the cap).

Basically I'm saying screw Vancouver. I'm not fixing their cap when it doesn't improve the Ducks in a meaningful way.

I'll say it again: the Avs are not trading Girard for futures, especially not a 2nd and a 3rd, one of which is next year. They've never expressed interest in trading him, he's never been on the block but if they did decide to trade him it would A) have to be a very strong offer of, B) good player(s) coming back. He's not a superstar but you also don't find 25 y/o D with lots of term left at a pretty affordable cap hit that can play in all situations and in all three zones averaging top four minutes every day; those are valuable and somewhat rare players.

Lots of people who don't know the Avs assume they'd prize the cap space they'd get by trading Girard but that is flat-out wrong. They value the cost-certainty of the player and what he does for them on the ice. I would say, unless you're offering a very good young player or two good young players back that can immediately enter the lineup and help the Avs win, don't bother trying to trade or trade for Girard.

I have to agree with what @CHAR is saying about the middle six, I don't see us taking on any more guys unless someone leaves. We can always look at who is going to be available next UFA season.

I have no problem with Meyers so long as we are getting paid, which we are.

However, I really disagree with the Girard trade, he's a good player, but he is the wrong type of defenseman for us. He is going to get caved in on the Fowler line for the same reason the Drysdale would, lack of size and physicality, easy to bump off the puck, etc. Great player on a good contract, but we need another puck moving powerplay quarterback like I need a hole in the head. Besides that, the Avs likely want to turn Girard into a 2C, and the only think we have available is Lundestrom who probably doesn't wet their whistle.

Looking back on the season and forward towards the draft, I have to question if the Comtois experiment has run its course. I wouldn't QO him just to stick him on the 4th line. I'm also thinking that Jones is finally coming around, he was playing with swagger this season, and while it didn't reflect on the scoreboard as much as I would have liked, he was displaying that power forward game he had back in JR when he was playing up with Terry. I'd like to continue that experiment and see where it leads, because if he can pot 20+ goals a season being a Tasmanian Devil of chaos in front of the other teams net, he certainly can take a spot on 2nd line wing that we were hoping to hold out for Comtois. Its said power forwards take as long as defenseman to really develop, and Jones was certainly passing the eye test this year. Lets move him up the roster and get him some PP2 time.

I also think I would pull BOG up for 4C over Nestrenko, let the guy have a year in the AHL to see what he can really do.

Agree 100% with you on these points. For me Comtois either signs a multi-year term for less AAV than his QO or Verbeek walks away.

I've always pictured Jones maturing into a Crouse type player and that damn torn pectoral derailed that in a big way. But I give him at least one more season to make good on that potential.

Groulx over Nesterenko all day. It's simply waivers and who's exempt and who isn't.
