Description

The Jackets, deciding to end the season on a win streak at the worst possible time, beat Buffalo tonight and drop to 4th-worst in the league. In the draft lottery, somehow division-rivals Washington (1st OA) and Philly (2nd OA) win the top two picks, and Columbus falls to 6th OA. They pick Zach Benson, another winger who is not ready for the NHL.

Desperate for a center, they trade for Hayes at the draft. Desperate for a LD, they gift the Pens a couple of draft picks for Petterson at the draft. Still not done, they trade the wrong RD in the offseason and an undersized prospect for more LD help.

Finally, to fill out the roster, they sign fan-favorite Nick Foligno back in the offseason for too-much-money at too-much-term.

Brad Larsen signs an extension, they continue to shift deck chairs all season, and Gudbrandson plays top-pair all year on his way to a record-setting -83 +/- rating. The youngsters all have development stifled by playing 8 minutes or less per night, including D-man David Jiricek, as Brad trusts Andrew Peeke more.

The team improves on this season, finishing 2024 at 5th-worst in the league. The Penguins, led by 19th OA pick (originally LAK, from CBJ via trade) Oliver Bonk, have a resurgent year and win the Cup.

Zero need for foligno. Also only really need one defenseman to serve as a stopgap until the prospects are ready. Can’t see the pens or flames doing those trades unless they are rebuilding.

For what it's worth: Zach Benson, in isolation, would be great for this team. He'd be the best forward prospect in the org since Rick Nash and it's possible he plays in the middle of the ice. Once he gets to the NHL his game projects to support and enhance any of KJ, Laine, Marchenko, Chinakov and Sillinger. He's (probably) not gonna fill the 1C gap and it would sting missing out on Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson and Michkov.
