Severson has said he wants long-term deal and it has been speculated by Friedman and others that he would sacrifice salary to get it. Devils probably would have already extended him if he would take 4 x $4m (and probably wouldn’t have traded for Marino).

Megna is a 6’6” 220 lbs vet dman on a minimum contract with another year and merkley is cheap and still has potential to be great if given a chance. I don’t thinks it’s a bad trade at all. Megna should get a 2nd if not more at the deadline.

Avs already have a d core of Makar/Toews/Girard/Byram/Manson/Johnson. At best, Megna is a 6D on a healthy roster. Megna is big but he’s a replacement level player.

Merkley is a reclamation project. You can have Kaut if you’d like.
