Which player is worth more? Matthews is the better/more prized/more established player, but at significantly more cap hit. Both are young enough that age vs expected performance will be pretty negligible in comparing whether or not either player will degrade or improve a ton over the life of the contract. Jersey wouldn't do it without some kind of extension in place ... which Matthews isn't able to sign until the offseason. With an extension, Jersey would probably be all over it.

Devils shouldn't. They have Bratt to resign with a bunch of young guns coming up as well, so they may not be able to afford Matthews extension
