I think this would be something of an ideal scenario for the Jets going into next season. Gives the Jets one last kick at the can with the Scheifele/Wheeler/Hellebuyck/Dubois core before all of their contracts expire at the end of the season. Even we retained two of those four, that's a significant set-back for the team.

Trading Dillon would seem like it runs against that philosophy but my reasoning is that he has been outperformed by Samberg so far this season, IMO, and his cap hit is too large. Need to move him to facilitate offering Toews any kind of contract.

Obviously this scenario is contingent on a few things working out in Winnipeg's favor:

1. Toews takes a hometown discount to play his last season or two in Winnipeg, ala Spezza/Giordano in Toronto. I think this is possible because he just made $80M on his last contract and he's a legit Winnipeg product, born and raised.

2. Heinola doesn't request a trade after playing all of 22-23 in the AHL and is still a Jet come 23/24.

3. Lambert makes the team out of camp. If he doesn't, then just put Eyssimont in his place as 3rd line RW and put Harkins in at 4th line LW.
