- assuming bernier is pretty much a ltiretirement candidate but if not just take the L and buy him out tbh
- assumes we move on from (which we should be doing tbh) from tuna and mango
- assumes we reach agreements with all of our rfas

this as we see leaves us with like $12-15M in room and as solid as the roster looks on paper we also feel a bit dead in the water, especially with the east as stacked as it is. where do we go from here?

I think this year will be about learning to win.

1. Let’s get a better defensive system. Cover the crease, let the wingers help in corners, everyone blocks shots…etc

2. Let’s see what we have in secondary young players like Zetterlund, Bahl, Okhotiuk, Thompson…all guys on the bubble when making out 2025 teams.

3. Get Hughes, Mukhamadullin, maybe even Gritsyuk into NHL games by end of year.

4. Learn how to lock down leads.

5. Stay healthy

No need to buy Bernier out this year even if he gets healthy after the new year.
Knowing our luck with goalie injuries, we could use that extra cover over the last couple months of this season.

I think Wood, AJ, Haula, Tatar and Graves should all walk at the end of the season, if the Devils are competing for (and god forbid) actually makes the playoffs for once.
But if the Devils are out of the playoff race come the trade deadline, they should all be dealt.
I'd like the Devils to extend Severson, not to trade him.

I think this could be our 21-man roster for 23/24, without any external additions:

Sharangovich - Hughes - Bratt
Holtz - Hischier - Palat
Gritsyuk - Mercer - Zetterlund
Foote - Boqvist - Bastian

Siegenthaler - Hamilton
Hughes - Severson
T. Smith - Walsh

Then you'd have Okhotiuk, Mukhammadulin and Nemec to call up during the course of the season.
I'd expect this roster to clock in at ca 75m, meaning there's a ton of room to add at TDL in 2024 for a deeper playoff run.

With the log jam at forward, there is no room for guys that have options left ... so maybe there is still a deal on the horizon? Some package of a young potentially useful asset(s) (McLeod/Boqvist/other) + Tatar/Johnsson? Save that, I agree with everyone here ... hunker down, let the kids play, hope to stay healthy & develop chemistry/solidify roles.

In the likely event team misses playoffs, all UFAs are up for best offer (with the possible exception of an extension for either Graves or Severson, not both ... if terms are team friendly). With the ability to retain salary & the players thry will have available, NJ would be a hot trade partner at TDL
