They only have $2,765,000 in cap space with Hauge and Roy to resign (both are gonna command at least 3 AAV).. and that's before replacing Smith, Janmark, and most of the bottom 6.

Karlsson isn't a bad player at all but the league has Vegas over a barrel and anyone would be literally moronic to give them anything back in any trade they need to get cap compliant. The key here is term where unlike Dadonov or Brossoit who are expiring deals, Karlsson still has 5 years left at 5.9. With Eichel in the fold, Stephenson's play and chemistry with Stone and Patches, and Roy's emergence.. 5.9 becomes a lot to pay someone who is going to be their 3C... maybe 4C as Roy gets even better. I know Karlsson is original VGK but getting a soon to be 30 year old 3C with a 5.9 cap hit for 5 years off the books makes sense for a team that's always trying to improve and always competing. Moving Karlsson and paying a price of a pick to move him makes sense.

For Karlsson, he gets to go somewhere and be a 1C and get tons of ice time. It's still close (literally a 4 hour drive or 40 minute flight to Vegas where he has put down some roots), and with the term on his deal could potentially be in AZ as they come out of a rebuild and could be a great mentor to players like Hayton and whoever the Coyotes draft high the next two years.
