Description
A follow-up to last night's AGM (https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/537075?post_id=2848148)

The cap is going to be very, very tight for the Oilers: there's room to run a 23rd man but it leaves little in remaining space. Granted, flipping the LTIR deal of Klefbom to the Bolts will allow Edmonton to finally start accruing cap space. Another $1.5M raise in the cap, the expiration of $2.25M in buyout money over the summer, and Keith finally being put in the dirt will give them another little window during the UFA period to solidify the roster. Or double down on Holland's penchant for pissing away prime dollars.

All they have to do is get through this one-year cap crunch and they should be fine. I don't trust this management to do it intelligently however.

Why is TB paying to take on a contract slot and pay the uninsured part. This is absolutely mind boggling stupid for them!!!! There is absolutely no benefit for having more LTIR except to maybe get to the floor (TB doesn't have to worry about that)

For the same reason Toronto and Tampa have historically acquired LTIR contracts. Cap circumvention.

We were getting Räsänen too last night? frown

I still don't think they should retain on Varly. I realize it's only for a season but I tested this out on an unposted ACGM and between the retention and buyout of Kassian it made it difficult to fill a roster I liked. Felt like it needed one more piece and the cap was too tight

Retention on Varly makes no sense cap wise in any scenario. Unless you are signing a 1M backup, which would be unlikely. You're paying 3-5M for the backup with Varly's salary. The only benefit is a non lottery pick anywhere in the draft, which is solid but I'm not sure it makes much sense

I went with Lavoie > Rasanen and some other little piece, the optics for the Islanders looked better in my opinion. Perhaps I'm overvaluing Lavoie.

I don't know how any Varlamov trade to Edmonton occurs without retention. Edmonton manages to net the Islanders nearly $8M in cap space for next season and y'all still can't make it work?
