Alright so bear with me here cause things got a little out of hand and crazy, but these are just starting points.
Do I think they're all perfect and would work out? No, but most of these deals are close to what it might take to get it done. Nashville needs a shakeup. I think swapping positions of strength for positions of weakness and infusing youth in the lineup get the job done.
Philadelphia- We have Carrier, Fabbro and Allard. All of them are going to be 25 or younger when next season starts. I love Ellis, but moving him for a young top line forward would drastically improve the lineup. I don't know what could be added to this as both have a lot of value. Ellis is 30 year old top 20 dman with a moderate cap hit for a decent term. Konecny is a young forward with a slightly less expensive cap hit and less term, but who has shown over the past season he can be a consistent performer. A lot of things could happen with this trade, but it benefits both team immensely.
Edmonton- Arvidsson has struggled the past couple of years since his injury from Bortuzzo. A change of scenery could benefit him greatly, especially if he ends up playing along side two of the best players in the league. I'm really not sure how much it'll cost Edmonton to dump Neal, but it won't be cheap. Arvidsson has the potential to bounce back big time and they relieve themselves of a bad contract, so the loss of a good prospect and a 1st next year seems acceptable from my perspective. This is a good deal for both because Edmonton get a reasonably priced top 6 forward who is looking to bounce-back. Nashville gets a late first next year when they'll be able to scout better and a solid center prospect with some size. This may take another piece or two to balance out, but would be a solid move for either side.
Vancouver- This one was a little different because this is contingent upon getting Seattle to agree to take Duchene. Nashville plans to weaponize the cap space created by moving 1 of the 8 mil contracts. This could either happen before or after the expansion draft. Moving Jarnkrok to a team in need of a top 9 forward who can play up and down the line up and at every position, while taking on two bad contracts that end next year. That's why the ask is the 9OA pick. Maybe Vancouver isn't willing to part with that asset, but this allows them to escape the cap hell they've put themselves in and pursue a free agent or two and balance out their lineup. Nashville takes the contracts and buries them in the minors. This also allows Nashville the chance to grab a solid player who might be able to make an impact in only a couple of years. This one is probably the one I'm most unsure of because neither team really needs to do it, but it could greatly benefit both, plus trading a top 10 pick is a pretty crazy move. Maybe swap the years and get Vancouver's 1st next year and a 2nd this year, but they have to send a couple of high picks Nashville's way.
Expansion Draft to Seattle- This one is pretty self explanatory. Nashville makes a deal with the devil and trades a pick and prospect of some kind to get Duchene off the books. I don't know how Seattle values Duchene, but he helps them reach the cap floor and provides a solid top 6 option who can play center or wing. they also scoop up Davies who was solid all year, but left out of the lineup when guys got healthy in favor of bigger dmen. He's a good puck mover and once he gets more experience could really take a big step forward.
The rest of these deals are done before or during the season to move pending UFAs in favor of youth already in the system and adding mid round picks.
Nashville already learned this year if they let the young guys play good things can happen. I'm hoping Granlund will resign if we can clear the room for him. If not the next best option is Alexander Wennberg, who would probably sign a similar contract.
Benning could probably play most of the year in Nashville, but I'd like to see Allard get another shot at the lineup. He only had one game last year, and it was right before we went on our run and everyone got healthy. He and Carrier have always been considered a similar skill level and Carrier has panned out so Allard should get another shot. If he doesn't work out or we don't we need to trade him for a pick or a another prospect because a lot of teams could use a RD.
I've put both Pitlick and Novak in the lineup because Pitlick showed flashes of a top 9 forward when he was in the lineup. He just needs to get more experience and comfortable at the next level. Novak excelled in the AHL and has been on the rise since leaving college. In the last year of his Entry level deal, we need to get him battle tested. He's got similar stats to Jeannot and could possibly excel playing with his former linemate and longtime NHL veteran Sissons.
There's not much to change about the top 2 lines. I would let Tomasino play top 6 minutes alongside Forsberg and Granlund to allow him to grow alongside to very good play makers who can also put the puck in the net when they're on their game.
Tolvanen and Johansen showed good chemistry last year. Tolvanen didn't really get back to where he was at before his time off, but I have no doubt he'll bounce back and I look forward to seeing him play with some more confidence in his second year. Adding Konecny to this line to replace Arvidsson is obvious. He provides more skill and a little grit to the top line, which hopefully brings out some of the grit in Johansen, because when Joey plays with grit he's a different player.
I've got Trenin above Jeannot in this scenario because I like his puck protection in the corners, and I think with someone like Kunin who can get open in front of the net they could be dangerous. I also feel he has another gear and more potential. Pitlick is on this line to add a little speed in transition and because he has a skillset more suited for the top 9 more than an energy line like the HERD.
Already covered the fourth line and how I like the combo of Jeannot, Novak and Sissons.
The extra forwards are Neal and Olivier. Olivier can add more grit and slot in on the bottom line should Novak not work out. Neal is the prodigal son returned home. A Smashville favorite who could slide in somewhere in the top nine should someone go down with an injury.
The defense pairs are a little more fluid. I hope we see Carrier play alongside Josi because they have the speed to compliment each other.
I have Ekholm with Allard because he's shown he can shelter young and inexperienced players and help them develop.
Farrance and Fabbro are paired together for the chemistry I think they can develop. Fabbro needs to figure out what his game is though if he wants to be a longtime player in Nashville.
Harpur was solid last year, not great but solid, and would make a good 7th dman in favor of letting Farrance get the ice time he needs.
This lineup isn't perfect, but I think Nashville should try to re-tool and not worry so much about being competitive next year. Taking a year to let young guys have a shot and also gain some assets would be a great boon, so when Askarov comes over this team could be a whole lot different and hopefully morph into a serious contender.
If you stuck with me this far and read all the way through, I greatly appreciate it and hope you enjoyed. If you don't like the trades let me know why. Like I said at the start these are just a rough idea of some drastic changes, which could really give Nashville the shakeup it needs.
I don’t really know what either team might have to add to make this trade work. But a trade centered around these two seems like a good move for both sides.
I'm not entirely sure how this package would really shape up. But sending Arvidsson who has a reasonable cap hit and taking back Neal to help Edmonton clear cap space and getting solid assets seems like a good deal for both teams.
Something similar to this gets the deal done. Seattle gets a game changing top 6 forward to be a staple of their franchise. Davies is great up and coming defenseman who really just needs the reps at the NHL level. Looked good all year with the puck and could even quarterback a PP unit.
This guy can go anywhere and be successful. He's a really hard working guy who deserved to be in the lineup for a least 1 game, but got sat in favor of bigger guys. Pick could be anything
I'm not usually so blunt, but Benning doesn't even approach that type of return. This could be an overvaluing of your own player or a lack of knowledge about another teams prospect pool (which is completely understandable, I don't mean that to be disparaging) or a combination of both, but that deal really ain't it.
The thought and effort you put into this post is really good though. It was a good read.
I believe the Canucks are giving up the first to divest themselves of Eriksson and Roussel here. They're getting Jarnkrok for the 2nd. Not saying I necessarily think it's in VAN's best interest to do this, but claiming they're trading the 1st for a "rental" is a bit misleading.
I agree with @LeafsFanForSomeReason that you're over-valuing Benning. As a deadline rental he probably fetches something closer to a 4th from an interested team. Leafs fans seem to value both prospects more highly than their draft positions. I don't think you'd get either player for Benning.
