Description

Since the Leafs fan-base seems to be in full revolt against Marner, I have an honest question: why does Matthews get a pass for being greedy? Sure, his contract was wrapped up awhile back because Dubas made him a priority, but why does Marner get vilified while no one seems to mention that Matthews got more money per year and less term than his most logical comparable, Jack Eichel. Even if you argue Matthews is better than Eichel and deserved more money, if Matthews wasn't being greedy, he would have at least signed for the full 8 like McDavid, Eichel, or Draisaitl.

Why the double standard? I don't get it.

For the record, my opinion is this is all a business and the players have the right to try to maximize their earnings, so I can't fault any of them for trying to get as favorable of a deal as they can.

I think you nailed it with the contract, not so much with the narrative. MM wants that 5 year term to get to UFA status early and the leafs have nobody to blame but themselves for it. They gave it to Matthews last year and theyll most likely have to give it to MM this year. The leafs set the RFA market last season and teams are gonna have to follow suit

If that's how a lot of fans see it, that sorta makes sense given that Tavares turned down more money from other teams to go to Toronto. That makes sense why the anger at Marner, but doesn't explain why Matthews gets a pass.

Matthews is slightly over paid but at the same time. He is a top 5v5 scorer if he can fit a full season in he’s basically worth what he’s got.

It comes down to matthews almost being worth 11, Tavares being worth 11, and marner wanting their money which is understandable but at the end of the day marner ain’t Tavares and don’t bring the MARNER LED THE LEAFS BLAH BLAH BLAH, Matthews healthy would be the leafs scorer leader if he played full seasons/ 70+ games.

Matthews is a 0.97 ppg
Marner is a 0.92 ppg

One has been healthy and one has been dealing with injuries which derail play more than we think. So putting up a 0.97 while being “injury riddled” is quite impressive and he doesn’t play with a guy named Tavares

no chance in hell. Mathews is a 40 goal scorer. Marner isn't anywhere close to that, they aren't even remotely comparable.
