Small rebuild for the dark years 22 Off season

The Kings have an embarrassment of riches at RHD. Center is probably the only position where they are more heavily stocked.
Doughty
Roy
Walker
Clarke
Faber
Grans
Spence
Strand
Durzi
The guy that is 7th on the RHD depth chart won QMJHL defenseman of the year in 2020 and was a member of Canada's WJC gold medal team last Christmas. They're pretty much set at that position for the foreseeable future.

Small rebuild for the dark years 22 Off season
The SoCal team that would be interested in a high-quality RD (to replace Josh Manson and Kevin Shattenkirk) is Anaheim, not Los Angeles. The Kings are quite happy going forward with Doughty, Roy and Walker, with Jordan Spence and Helge Grans coming up (not to mention 2021 first-round draft pick/steal Brandt Clarke, who has already been signed).

It doesn't matter if MN needs Kessel (who they could use as a quality RHS FWD). He played when they won the Cup, that's really all that seems to matter to GMBG. Kessel in the lineup also buys Boldy a year of getting acclimated to the NHL, or more AHL time if needed.
Crouse replaces Greenway as a bottom-6 wing and is an improvement over Bjugstad.
This isn't a bad trade. I think MN is light on it though. They improve all 3 players traded and it only costs them a 1st.

I see this as a clear playoff team, probably 2nd in the Central division. We would most likely play one of the Jets/Hawks/Stars/a wildcard team from the Pacific. I see us winning that series and moving on to face the Avalanche. With enough luck that could be our series as well and then anything is possible.

If the asking price comes down I wouldn't be surprised if we traded for him. Sounds like the price is crazy though which is why teams haven't bitten.

What is with all the insane Eichel valuations
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>Fiala is a top line player, but a top line winger also isn't as good as most people think.
Perhaps it's just that the leafs really need a guy like Greenway that makes me appreciate him so much more (I say as a Leafs fan)</div></div>
Fiala puts up similar numbers to guys like Boeser, Tkachuk, Svechnikov, Gaudreau, Nylander, Barzal, Couturier and Ehlers while playing with bottom six players. He's ahead of guys like Reinhart, Laine, Forsberg, Kuznetsov. All of those players play with their teams best forwards. If you gave Fiala similar linemates to those types, he'd be putting up top 20-25 numbers league wide. Probably point per game paces.
The reason Fiala and Kaprizov don't play together is because the Wild coaching staff wanted to spread the offense across lines, rather than have one super line and not much else. The fact that they're considered roughly equal offensive talents should tell you what you need to know.
Fiala is dangerously good at generating offense and very few people outside of Minnesota realize that because they look at the stat lines and see that he's "nothing special", rather than watching him play and understanding the context behind the numbers.

That's more or less exactly what I would expect from Minni except id include Rask in the trade for salary purposes.
I figure
One of Rossi/Boldy
One of Fiala/Greenway
Two firsts
Rask as salary filler

Sounds crazy but you are trading for Jack Eichel..franchise centre who Buffalo is not going to let go for cheap...have to ask yourself if he is worth it for all of that or if you can snag someone in Free Agency within the next few years for cheaper who could be just as good? Don't want to rip apart the team for just Eichel alone...tough one...</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>zreich4</b></div><div>First point I hope he can get more than 3 years. This contract is practically a worse case scenario.
Second point no argument.
Third point I have to disagree. Kessel only having one year left, can still score, and brings another right hand shot to a lineup (more importantly PP) that could use more. Just for the fact that we get out of 3 years of Parise's cap hit is a win in my book. However in Russo's article on the Athletic today he did come out and say we would still be on the hook for recapture penalties even with a buy out so maybe Parise will stay.</div></div>
From the 3rd point, my perspective is wild have like a zillion Wingers, and by trading for Kessel, you are preventing Matt boldy from having any chance at playing unless it's injury.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>zreich4</b></div><div>Yea and no. I’m a fan not a GM. It addresses the biggest need this franchise has. But like everyone says the trade is more than likely going to hurt at least somewhat to acquire him.</div></div>
Yeah because we have 145k in cap space with no 13th forward or 7th defenseman, no money left to meaningfully upgrade the roster in any way in the next 2-3 years, you can't give anyone raises, you desperately need cheap talent and you traded Boldy and three firsts away so you don't have any.
Hockey is a team game. Winning the Cup is about having guys playing above their contracts. Most of your money is going to guys who can not realistically play above their contracts.
Eichel is a great player. If we could sign him as a UFA for 10M this summer without giving anything up for him, we still probably couldn't without losing a good piece or two to the salary cap. But trading for him compounds the issue because of what you're also giving up to acquire him. He's just not worth it, even though he is a true 1C.

Um, Parise doesn't cost $8M in cap for the next 4 years if he's bought out... that's ludicrous. It only gets that close in years 3 and 4. Even then that's an exaggeration.
It's spread out over 8 Years.
Year 1: $2.37M
Year 2: $6.37M
Years 3-4: $7.37M
Years 5-8: $833k
If I'm Guerin, I stay away from this deal anyway. I agree with <a href="/users/Caerii" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Caerii</a>.

Yeah just wanted to echo this comment. Kudos OP - very creative and intriguing stuff here. I'd love to snag RNH (or Coots, or someone similar) and not have them fill the role with ridiculous expectations. That person wouldn't necessarily need to be a bona fide 1C when you have depth like this, which I think can sometimes help guys flourish.
My only major suggestion would be keeping Bonino instead of Stepan. Cost would likely be similar, and I like Bonino's durability and experience more than Stepans.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mintyfresh</b></div><div>I would imagine Kaprizov does a bridge contract. If he does sign long term, I'd imagine it more around 7.5 mark. I don't think Minnesota is gonna just give him 9 mil for 8 years so quickly. Although Nolan Patrick isn't worth what you are giving up for him at his current point, I could imagine the Flyers trying to use him as a trade piece or as a sweetener in expansion for the Kraken to take Voracek's gigantic contract.</div></div>
Here's the problem with a bridge deal:
- If we give him a 3 year deal, he's just reached UFA. Obviously a bad move,
- If we give him a 2 year deal, he's still an RFA, but now he has all the leverage in negotiations. We have no power and if he wants out, all he has to do is elect to go to arb where we have to give him a 1 year deal then he's a UFA and gone.
Our options are a 1 year deal or long term. We can give him a 1 year contract to make sure he's legit, but if he has another great year or does even better, his price keeps going up. It's a slight risk going long term, but Kirill just turned 24 a couple weeks ago so even on an 8 year deal, he'd only be 32 at the end of it. We'd be out of the deal before he starts to fall off too much.

The big issue here is RNH conceptually & materially
Going to all that effort to unload aging player dead money which is what RNH will be there ultimately and almost certainly a value disparity asap it's just odd
Going from one of McDraisaitl as a primary linemate and a 10% drop in PP from EDM to MIN easily sets him back to 50 pts a year (was on pace for that even this)
It feels like one step forward one step back all told

Years 5-8 are under $1m. If Guerin did it, it would be to rid himself of a NMC and create a roster spot. It's not ideal, but neither is having a $7.5m healthy scratch.

Even if the wild have a ton of cap space having that much tied up for Parise for those last 3 years is going to set any team back. Have to ride out at least another season (likely 2) before it become more doable.
