Ostlund is probably at least 2 years away from an NHL roster and then probably at least 2 more years before he is actually contributing, more than being detrimental.
Kakko helps sooner.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AntiAnalytics</b></div><div>Why do u want Kakko??
He is what he is- a decent 2way middle6 player
I’d rather hang on to Ostlund & see what he becomes
Okposo & Girgs (and EJ & Olofsson) can be shipped out to whoever will give us the best draft picks</div></div>
Not sure that I do want him. Just he's in the rumor-ville.
I think Ostlund's potential is probably higher.
BUT, BUF wants/needs grit and size. Something Kakko has and Ostlund does not.
I could see Kakko being a target for KA. Just seeing what a potential trade could look like...

Letting Gaudreau go for nothing was a much better move. I agree.
At some point, you have to take the best offer on the table.

(COL/BUF) - Byram for Mittelstadt
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dahlin_On_Me</b></div><div>Like Mitts and will miss him. It will be interesting to see how he does on a better team. As far as Byram, haven’t seen him play but since he’s a 4th overall I’d guess he’s an upgrade for Sabres D. Concerning about his injury history however.
Looks good for Av’s at the moment but I think this deal will age well for the Sabres especially if Mitts isn’t resigned. Probably will he’s class.
For those on about the LH / RH D stuff, it’s not that big of a deal and if you can’t play both side you probably shouldn’t be playing in the NHL. Im rubbish but as a LH Defender myself I actually prefer to play in the Right. It’s better for one timers and poke checks. It’s a little harder on breakouts when you need to thread the needle on the backhand (only if there is o time and room) to your forwards. A pro should be able to manage.</div></div>
Yea, exactly. People are putting way too much emphasis on whether players are left or right-handed. Dahlin plays all over the ice. Power can too. The way more important thing is how defensive partners play together.
I see a lot of people saying "He's stuck behind Dahlin and Power". What if Power-Dahlin are your top pairing and Byram is on your second pairing with Clifton/Jokiharju/Ryan Johnson.
Either way lots of options.
I think critiquing the trade on handed-ness is just lazy.
Defense wins championships and BUF now has 6 former 1st rounder in:
Dahlin (#1)
Power (#1)
Byram (#4)
Jokiharju (#29)
Johnson (#31)
Samuelsson (#32)
That's a lot of young talent on D.
(and yes, please feel free to tell me that Samuelsson was actually a 2nd rounder)

I'm sure they were asking for a 1st. Apparently, no team offered them one, or at least no other team offered them a 1st + a prospect.
How did CAL get fleeced, exactly? Did you talk to some GMs around the league that were offering them a better return? Or are you just not thinking?

Since Nov 11 among goalies with 1000 mins TOI (26 games, not 7)
UPL: .914 sv%, 2.40 GAA, 7.16GSAA

Why on earth would BUF even trade UPL for Swayman straight up? And you think BOS should just get a top C in the league, on a $2.5mm contract, on top of it and a 2nd??

And it's more than 7 games.
Question: Did Ullmark suddenly become a markedly better goalie in BOS, winning a Vezina in the process. Or was he just playing behind a better team?
I'm a fan of both Ullmark and UPL, but I don't see any difference.

I know it won't ever happen, but switch UPL and Swayman...Put Swayman on the Sabres and there won't be any difference. Literally none, maybe even worse.

BOS goalies boast good numbers behind a good structured team D. That is obvious. UPL, by the way, has a .937 sv% going back to Jan 1, when he took over the starting job...Swayman? .912.
Mitts currently leads the Sabres in 5v5 TOI. He's also only behind these players in 5v5 points going on the past year+ (Since dec 9 2022):
1. MacK - 95
2. Pasta - 78
3. McD- 77
4. Kuch - 76
5. Point - 75
6. Rantanen - 71
7. Pettersson- 69
8. Matthews- 68
9. Mittelstadt - 67
The trade makes ZERO sense for the Sabres. ZERO.
We're getting a goalie who is playing worse on a much better team, plus giving a top-10 F in points, plus a top-40ish pick. In what world?

Swayman and UPL are equivalent. Why are the Sabres adding a top-10 F in the NHL in 5v5 points + a 2nd???

If you buy him out in 1 july 2026, you save just 3,3 mil in cap space. So either way, for 26/27 season (this should be contention year 1 for Sabres, assuming this season is dead, next is playoffs) you are dealing with 5 to 6 mil dead cap.</div></div>
And creating cap space....

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Czu8iks</b></div><div>
1) You can, but it could backfire
2) They are point production is very similiar, so if sides agree on 8yrs deal, then Tippett`s range it would be
3) He really cant, since in 2nd year after buyout, dead cap will be 6 mil, and Sabres need salary space going forward, not right now. Any trade can be blocked by NMC by Skinner.</div></div>
1) How could it backfire? They are still BUF property for 4 more years after their ELCs expire. Bridge contracts are pretty standard around the league.
2) No sense in comparing their point production this season. They still have 1 more season to go.
3) In the 2nd year of what buyout? There are plenty of different seasons where he can be bought out and they, of course, are for different dollar amounts, depending on the year...Obviously any trade by Skinner can be blocked, but, would he rather get the full value of his current contract or be bought out (and thus make less money)? We don't know, but he may very well accept a trade. And last I checked even if his dead cap will be $6 million, that CREATES $3mm in CAP SPACE.

Both Peterka and Quinn price is set at Owen Tippett range for 8x6,25mil.</div></div>
1) You can definitely bridge them.
2) Tippet is Mittelstadt's age, not the age of JJP, etc. Not sure how Tippet's contract has any relevance here-- other than to point out that Tippet was bridged and not lost
3) Skinner can be moved or bought out if we need more room, which in this scenario --we don't.

The only trade I'd do here is the Trouba trade, but that is going to be hard to pull off as Trouba currently has a NMC and then a modified NTC after this season.
Honestly, D is no longer a problem for this team, in my opinion. Clifton has been playing really good hockey. Heck, all of the defensemen, other than Dahlin are now plusses on the season.
I think Samuelsson, especially considering his contract, is better and more valuable than Borgen.
I don't see how the Mitts trade makes us a better team now, or in the future. I would never trade a top-10 pick for (presumably) 2 late 1sts.
The Olofsson trade...that's fine...doesn't move the needle really either way.
Fix the PP (through coaching) and the team as constructed is a playoff team.

All the young talent is on an ELC, or will still be an RFA after their ELC's expire. There's no reason BUF cannot take on a contract like Trouba's.
