(PIT/CAR) - Guentzel, Smith for Bunting, Koivunen, Ponomarev, Lucius, 2024 2nd (PHI), 2024 5th (CAR)
Wow. This is an absolute fleece job by Carolina. I like Koivunen a lot, Lucius is solid, and Ponomarev is alright, but this is Jake freakin' Guentzel we are talking about. Pittsburgh doesnt even get a 1st unless Carolina makes the SCF. Feels like Dubas could've done so much better, guys like Morrow or Blake or Nadeau would've been far more fair.
For Carolina, this is the superstar they have long wanted. Guentzel is one of the best wingers in this league, and they didnt even have to give up any of their best prospects to get him. Excellent addition and he will thrive in Carolina.
For Pittsburgh, I already mentioned I really like Koivunen and I think Bunting next to Crosby will be very fun, but man this is underwhelming. I doubt Ponomarev or Lucius become much more than bottom 6ers, and they arent really guys you want to kick off your rebuild. This is going to be a tough pill to shallow for Pens fans who rightfully expected much more for a guy who gave his all to the organization for years.
The real winners here are NHL fans who are thrilled Vegas didnt land Guentzel. Heres to hoping they strike out on Buchnevich as well!

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NorthernLeafsFan05</b></div><div>This is laughably bad for the Senators, they couldn't even pry a decent prospect out of Florida. I get that the trade protection on Tarasenkos deal allowed him to dictate where he went, but that doesn't change the fact that this trade is horrible. For crying out loud, Anthony Mantha cost the Knights more than this.
This is highway robbery for the Panthers who add another lethal offensive weapon to their already loaded forward group. At only 2.5m, he is going to be extremely valuable. If they want to buy more, they easily could (granted they don't have the money). This was a masterclass of a trade from Zito and a complete blunder by Staios</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KSIxSKULLS</b></div><div>About KD? Nope I do not. He's easily a bottom 5 GM in a league IMO, it's still way early and he can change that around, but these contracts are not good.</div></div>
I think most of his trades and seemingly a lot of his top 3 round draft picks (not including Bedard) have been top 10 in league compared to peers. These veteran, lockerroom, depth signings I could not care less about. I’m much more concerned with and will judge him on his extensions of Vlasic, Reichel, and Raddysh. One is beyond expectations and two are having worse years than anticipated. This is how to better judge him, IMO. He’s very clear and transparent on his plan and he’s stuck with it.
Not sure how he makes a bottom 5 GM list. Seems you’re not including the facts of his asset accumulation, quality of drafted players, building one of the best prospect pools in the league and still having 5 1sts and 8 2nd round picks to go in next 3 years.
After next season, Hawks only have 2 forwards, 2 Dmen, and a goalie signed. He has a complete clean slate to build his team. Judge him then but now is too early.
What would be your master plan?

That’s a great deal for the Blackhawks! Would it be a good deal for any other team? Absolutely not but they need to surround Bedard with good players and Dickinson is just that. Won’t affect them financially and will also help them reach the floor

For future posters… please stop complaining it’s too much money. It’s a trash fire team that will need to reach cap floor and he’s signed for 2 years only. Relax. It fits everyone’s needs which makes it a win-win contract.

People will complain that they could’ve taken cap dumps instead, but Hawks are really emphasizing locker room culture. They’ve been praising Dickinson for stepping up as a leader all season

I'm happy for Dickinson, he definitely deserves this after being a committed Blackhawk for the last little bit. Is it an overpay? Absolutely, but these are the Blackhawks we are talking about. Seems like a good dude and a strong leader, plus it helps the Hawks reach the cap floor. I don't mind it at all

Toronto Maple Leafs signed William Nylander (8 Years / $11,500,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jdb9831</b></div><div>In a vacuum, this is a good deal just based on what Nylander brings to the table. He is worth the money and should continue to be through most of the contract. The last few years won't be as bad with the higher cap as well.
The problem is the structure of this team. I just don't think you can give 4 players 50% of the money and ice a complete roster. I have the feeling the Delta between JT+Marner now compared to JT+Marner with their upcoming extensions won't be much, if anything. JT will see his pay come down, I honestly don't know what a 'fair' number will look like, and Marner will go up. Probably something around 13-14 million/year. So even if JT takes 6-8 million on the next deal, the core four will still cost around 50% of the cap.</div></div>
This is really what it boils down to. Big Willie has absolutely earned his payday but between him, JT, Stachews, and Mitch the rest of the roster is gonna be looking at Toronto's available cap like Will Smith looking around at the house at the end of Fresh Prince.
