Mitch Marner Appreciation Post
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CMcAvoy73</b></div><div>And in the playoffs?</div></div>
Okay.. I get the whole playoffs thing but people need to realize that there's plenty of teams that haven't been making the playoffs and some were even dumpster fires during the regular season.
Just cause a player struggled in the playoffs doesn't make him completely useless for the entire rest of the league.

Mitch Marner Appreciation Post
Despite his bad playoff performances people forget
Marner is only 24 years old
is improving on a yearly basis
is one of the best wings currently in the NHL
and is a solid 2-way player
Not every player is a playoff performer he will figure it out.

Not everyone When you have such a large fan base your going to have a large population with varied opinions
And again this is a FANTASY board filled with WHAT IF type posts. Its supposed to be fun and encourage dialogue.
NO one can deny what a great hockey player he is. I would say he is the best pure playmaker in the world right now. The only knock on him is he has a slightly high cap hit.

Uh averaged 67... In 50 some games. That's a pretty important detail you left out. By that standard, Tkachuk was a 30 point player this year.

I know Marner just whiffed in the playoffs but come on man he's a 100 point player, Tkachuk is like a 50 point guy at this point. You're overvaluing your own guy

Run it back
I like the idea of moving Nylander to 3C (at least part-time). I would keep Engvall around though, although I know you moved him for cap reasons as this roster is tight without having enough players). I could see Nylander playing 3C a bunch to provide some depth scoring, but still taking offensive zone shifts with Matthews and Galchenyk from time-to-time as well as some PP1 time. That would leave Engvall/Hyman/Mikheyev together as a defensive line but take some burden off of them to provide offence (since we know they can not). Getting some contributions from Spezza and Robertson (who could earn his way up the lineup) on the 4th and PP2 would be great as well.
They need to figure out the powerplay and turn it less into a Marner/Matthews passing attack. More creativity and off-puck movement is definitely necessary. I rarely see them trying many high-low passes that can help breakdown the diamond PK formation, would love to see that more.
Great ACGM. I do think they will want Liljegren to compete for icetime as well, but may try to sign a Ben Hutton type for the league minimum as some insurance. Reimer is an interesting add, not sure he'd come back to Toronto but he fits the profile of what they want (him and Bernier).

Trying out Pietrangelo
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RClay321</b></div><div>This team would be lucky to make the playoffs, absolutely no forward depth</div></div>
Certainly top heavy, but lucky to make the playoffs is just silly. The bottom 6 isn't the worst in the league. I'll agree that I am not comfortable with the 3C position but that can be addressed if it becomes a problem. Who knows, maybe Hallander pushes his way into that spot. Robertson is going to get better and wasn't bad in the playoffs. Barbarov is going to be a good player as well. The 4th line is going to be fine, and if we find a better 3C, and Engval goes down to the 4th then it's even better. Regardless, the top 2 lines are still stacked and will be so hard to contain and the defence is really good.

This is a great write up, good work. Agree on all points but moving Hyman down. I like what he is able to do on that line. When we are down a goal or two I dom’t Mind loading 2 lines up for the third.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Capitalfail67</b></div><div>yeah..... so based off 10 games he'll be on a 70 point season pace...... thats idiotic
but if you want to use actual math hes actually on pace for a 35 point season.... but thats awesome you doubled that.
if you want to go by small sample sizes tom wilson started the season over a point per game I guess we can look at him as a 90 point guy right? based off one month.
and no their best players are marner matthews Tavares ......nylander might be top 5 ....maybe after Reilly and Andersen. but at .42ppg thats not even top 5 on his current team....yikes</div></div>
Lol. Stick to your own team cause you clearly don't know anything about other ones or hockey in general.
By me saying he's been on a 70 point pace over the last month (more than 10 games just so you know) is saying that he started off slow because of the missed time. That if he played a full season things would be different. & no one gives a **** about Tom Wilson. No one was talking about him so it's pointless to bring him up. Nylander's point total is going to be lower this year because he's missed so much time. It's extremely hard to catch back up with that much time missed. Any player would struggle to catch up.
As for what I said about Nylander being Toronto's best player for the last month, it's true. Over the course of the entire season, yeah sure Tavares, Matthews, Marner, Reilly and Andersen have been better. But Nylander hasn't played the full season as I've said. & hockey is so much more than just points and points per game. Nylander is one of Toronto's top possession players, he wins face offs, his defensive game has dramatically improved (not even any bias there, go look at his analytics). He's one of the top 3 skaters on the the team. If you wanna just have things off offensive numbers, keep in mind that he's currently playing third line minutes with Marleau and Brown as his wingers so there's not much support for offensive numbers. And Tavares has been playing with Marner all season, Matthews with Kapanen and mainly Johnsson, so they have much more support and skill to score more goals than Nylander has.
Like I said, go watch some Leafs games if you're gonna comment stupid things. You don't know anything about hockey if you're just basing things off of PPG, that's ridiculous and idiotic.

5 Years for Matthews 6 for Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lunboxer</b></div><div>I agree with the Matthews contract. I think that's a fair number for both sides on a 5 year deal.
I don't agree with the Marner contract.
Kane and Marner are virtually identical (position, points per game, similar play style). Why would Marner take less cap % than Kane and give up 1 UFA year?</div></div>
This is simply untrue. Kane outproduced Marner his first two years, and while his points and goals were lower in total than Marner's predicted his place in the league was roughly the same. Kane also entered the league in his first post draft year (Marner did not) and won the calder as rookie of the year. He also did not have the benefit of playing with a player anywhere as good as John Tavares.
I do agree with many that Marner is making Tavares better, but I don't know why many don't seem to recognize that the reverse is true too. Marner's PPG over his three seasons are 0.79, 0.84, 1.27.
Over the last 5 years Tavares is 2nd in goals and 6th in points (<a href="http://hkref.com/tiny/9RKMA" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">http://hkref.com/tiny/9RKMA</a>). He is significantly better than anyone Kane played with

5 Years for Matthews 6 for Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OilersFan77</b></div><div>Sorry Leafs fans, if you think you're getting Marner on a deal worth less than 10m you're dreaming. The JT signing really screwed you guys in terms of team precedent. Unless Marner and/or Matthews (ha) are massively ftb then they're both getting over 10m. In terms of total points per 60, Matthews has 3.15, JT has 3.13, and Marner has 3.1. The drop off after that is quite big with Johnsson (2.33) and Kapanen (2.14) being the next two on the list. With that in mind, JT becomes a middle ground between Matthews and Marner where Matthews gets a shade more than JT and Marner gets a shade less than JT. Like I said, maybe Marner is a huge beauty who will take a discount but even then he's easily a 9m player (especially if Nylander is nearly a 7m player).
I get that the point is fewer years = less money now, but even so I just can't see how you get Matthews on a deal for less than 10m or Marner for anything below 9m.</div></div>
RFA vs UFA. Center vs winger. No RFA winger this CBA has gotten over 9.5 million. No non-arbitration eligible RFA winger this CBA has gotten over 7.5 million. The only RFA winger to get over either of those totals with a salary cap in existence was Ovechkin and he is in his own league.
