Nashville was nothing without Bonino just like Ottawa was nothing without Turris.
Duchene is a good player in theory, but I don't trust him enough without a tryout

Talbot is a good goalie On a team different team
Lots of teams fell into the basement from because of goalie injuries or just bad performance by their starters
NJD, PHI, OTT, CHI, COL, CAR, ANA, LAK, FLA...
It should be easy for EDM to trade Talbot, but it's late in the season for a UFA and he's a goalie on top of that. The price will be embarrassingly low.
EDM will just hold on to the hope they will be a playoff team and not make any changes until the new GM is hired
Would you trade Talbot to Vegas for a late round pick? Like 5th-7th?
Lehner will start every playoff game for the Islanders. Greiss has good chemistry and is more than good enough right now to back him up. if they wanted Talbot for the future, they would talk to him when he's UFA.

My New Lines Preference
It's hard to argue with success
If Tampa makes a trade, I'd bet on dumping Callahan's salary
* he's playing 10 minutes a night when in the lineup
* he's 33 with 1 more season left, earning $5.8 million
* Tampa has multiple key D going UFA, and RFAs getting big raises
by sending him to to a Pacific or NY team
* he has a 16 team trade list
* contenders won't want him, so he'll have to choose the best work environment / family situation
and bolstering their D at the same time
* Tampa can't come closer to being ready
* they have been active at past deadlines, and D is the one rumour they've been long attached to
* Stralman, Cobourn, Rutta are UFA after this season and too old for long term deals that could lower their cap hit
Something like 1st Rd 2019 + Sergachev or Foote (1st Rd D in 2016 and 2017) + Katchouk or Raddysh (2nd Rd W in 2016)
in exchange for the best available D who currently plays 20+ minutes that fits under the cap this season, and ideally is under contract for 2-3 more seasons

I don't even think Zaitsev is overpaid today. He's just on the high end of comparables because he came in as a mature UFA. The contract was fair, the mistake would be not trading him at the point of maximum benefit.
For the Leafs, I don't like him because he is the most overpaid on the team today. If he declines from top-4 quality, he becomes a big overpayment and the Leafs are tied down by term + NTC right at the moment when the cap is squeezing the hardest against the Cup window. It's just happens to be that with Zaitsev we can do something about it and get ahead of the problem.
No one would choose Marleau over Nylander, but we are stuck with Marleau so all eyes are on Nylander instead.
Same thing with wanting to trade Gardiner if we can't afford to keep him. An in-house rental isn't free, it comes at the cost of blocking a younger kid (see Jokiharju in Chicago stealing a spot that was up for grabs)
I'd shut up and be happy if NYI dealt with us, but they're over the moon with their improvement from last year and won't see the need to make any changes.

Is this enough for Granlund
Haha. I made a big mistake.
I was looking at Josh Bailey's age 29 + 5 more seasons. Sorry about that one point.
Still it's 4 years of patience to wait out current contracts and let Barzal lead, or get Granlund and suffer 8 years of falling short of being a contender while Barzal leaves.

I like it for the Leafs
The Isles are 22nd in GF so they could use Kappy, and any issues with Zaitsev's contract term won't even be noticed with the rest of the anchors they have

NYI has Ladd until age 37 and Boychuk until age 38, are you sure you want Granlund until age 34 as well?
I'd think it's safer to get out of the Leafs way and try to win while they're resetting after their first couple Stanley Cups under Tavares
Besides, the Islanders are where they are because they have allowed the fewest goals this season. They'll spend all their cap space just to keep Robin Lehner, while trying not to lose too many key free agents that are due for raises anytime inside the next 3.5 seasons of cap hell
Just trade Pulock, Mayfield, and Barzal to the Leafs for Nylander and Zaitsev. :D

It's beautiful that we got to clearly how stupid and incompetent the average member of the Old Boys Club really is.
The ones behind officiating are one level lower, but hopefully increasing sports betting will force those nepotism hires out just like the salary cap exposes bad GMs to accountability

Maybe ANA entertains trading Gibson though.
They aren't winning anything with high paid injured players that are hanging around for a while.
If they trade Gibson, they can get higher draft picks while still selling a fun game to fans where they lose 8-7. (the TOR/BUF/CAR model?)
ANA will probably produce another elite goalie before they miss having Gibson.
I'd want more high picks to present it as getting the next Getzlaf and Perry, although goalies always go for cheap in trades.

Realistic Jack Johnson Trade
For all the hockey smarts in the NHL
There's a lot of old boys repeating the same mistakes over and over.
JJ was guaranteed to be a bad contract because age related decline was multiplied by the term.
It's an absolute disaster 1 year in though. You can blame the salary on a bidding war, but giving term was an inexcusable mistake.
Is it buyout proof because of the age 35+ season? Otherwise I guess they hold it for 1 more season, and then pay a team starting their rebuild to warehouse the contract.

huh.
A rental, one of a few that can make a difference in Nashville, and at a price they don't regret if they get to the finals.
Tough call for Columbus. They might need to buy some replacement scoring to make this deal acceptable, and have a real shot in this year's playoffs.
I definitely buy into Panarin and Bobrovsky moving to FLA. That team is going to throw money at them. The more money the panthers lose in the next 3 years the better because they need to break their arena lease.

Modest Trade Deadline Buyers
Selling would be at the deadline. Simmonds for 1st+3rd, fine
NYR and LAK would want more at the deadline.
They are expiring contracts to age 30+ players, probably going as rentals to teams that can't afford them next year
PHI does any buying after the playoffs, because why pay more when you won't benefit

Hopefully Ottawa trades Melnyk for Desmarais as owner.
He'll be able to spend to the cap and keep players that hated the old front office.
He'll get the downtown rink built and make every penny back tenfold when he collects the federal government bribe money you see on the boards and in the boxes of the Senators home games.
With Melnyk around, it's just tough to see a future because he's been so repellent to Alfredsson + Karlsson

Dealing for Nyquist and Glendening
Detroit probably isn't aiming to make the playoffs before 2021, which is also the Seattle expansion draft year
They got burned by every 6+ year contract they signed to players who would be in their 30s when it finished.
I'm not a Detroit fan, but their one clear option is to tread water while they suffer the weight of their own contracts. Come 2021 they could have a stellar prospect pool and the most cap space in the league to add vets with.
They probably don't value bringing in anyone older than 22 today
Melker = 28
Ryan = 25
Gregor = 20, 111th overall / 4th round pick in 2016
2019 2nd Rd FLA = 18
I'd say yes for DET to take that high 2nd for one of Glendening or Nyquist, but I don't know about what they need to maintain a positive locker room and avoid Oilers disease.
Gregor might be equivalent value to an average result for a 2nd/3rd draft pick, but I can't vouch for that.
Seems fair, definitely an honest trade attempt with some effort. No idea if that's the high bid this year, but DET won't need to bluff or guess to get that.
I love to see SJS go all-in, they've already committed so much to winning the Stanley Cup this year. There's no refunds and no turning back now.

You don't see a problem with Zaitsev, because you haven't seen any of the past roster problems (you love 0% chance of beating Boston), past asset management problems turning gold into turds, and because you have underestimated every cap problem

BIG trades bringing in Oreilly and stone
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rja40</b></div><div>If the Blues were to actually consider trading ROR (which I highly doubt would happen), they are not going to send him to Calgary for that package. There are a lot of other teams that can provide a much better return that what this trade offers the Blues in return for their best player.</div></div>
I absolutely agree with that. No team is interested in quantity over quality. It's the opposite, you only get 50 NHL contracts, and you need to see a possible role filled for every one granted.
I only recognize Kylington + 1st + 2nd. The picks are in 2020 which is not STL's preference. There's nobody who expects those 3 assets will play more minutes for STL than ROR alone. In terms of quality, he is proven to be #4 in faceoffs won and the top FO%, and whatever is expected of Kylington is obviously less.
If you want STL to lose today, they have to have a *hope* of winning the trade in the long term.
Bigger deals are easier in the summer, and STL isn't on a deadline with an expiring contract. They will and should play out the season.
Other teams will send out playoff rentals or be forced to make cap dumps, because they have limited time and choices.
