same player, except Karlsson is a righty and 2 years younger while Dahlen is a lefty?
odd time of year to shuffle minor leaguers but I guess the Canucks probably are hoping to making a run at the Calder cup

but if those were their aims, you'd have to think they could have done a better deal last summer

(OTT/CBJ) - Duchene, Bergman for Abramov, Davidsson, 2019 1st and a conditional 2020 1st round pick
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Brian2016</b></div><div>Huge win for OTT. CBJ is all in w/ Panarin and Duchene. Even bigger win for OTT if Duchene re-signs w/ OTT, but that probably won't happen.</div></div>
1 mid 1st, or 2 late 1sts does not replace even 2 more years of minutes from Duchene
OTT got something, which is better than nothing, but they didn't particularly hurry up the day when the team could be a contender again. Their biggest gain is freeing up ice time to audition a lot of players, and dropping in the standings to get a higher draft pick. However if there is any crackdown on corruption and lobbying, the franchise will be cutting spending to the bone and scouting or player development will be dropping off

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JonJon</b></div><div>You think 2 prospects and a 1st round pick (not top3) is a "massive payment" for a rental such as Duchene and a prospect/depth player?</div></div>
Not to mention a solid Plan B if the breadman leaves town. The league is becoming a game of musical chairs and Duchene might not find another top line seat if he gives up his CBJ one, at least if he wants the top line salary to go with it

Best case for CBj is
TB - CAR
NYI - PIT
TOR - BOS
WSH - CBJ
They avoid a buzzsaw in TB, and something magical in NYI
They almost beat WSH last year, and have improved their odds for a rematch
MTL is dropping out because of a bad road record, PIT's will slip because they aren't finishing strong
maybe
TB - CBJ
TOR - NYI <----would be awesome
would love CBJ to take out TB in round 2. I feel like TB, SJ, WSH, PIT are all going to play dirty hockey and injuries or suspensions could just take us anywhere

Carter Hart changed the picture.
But they're still holding 7 pro goalies with only 1 in Europe, and using conditioning stints to avoid waivers.
There is a 50 contract limit, so they probably want to drop 2 goalies on other teams.
Elliott and Neuvirth are technically still on IR. Neuvirth is married to Gudas' sister.
Gudas is the #1 asset Flyers are likely to trade.
I don't know what's up. Just throwing out some oddities and wondering out loud.

Leafs 2019-2020
I understood losing Komarov and Leivo
I think we need to stop giving up our versatile and cheap guys now. To find Brown we had to cycle through many different names over years. If we lose Johnsson/Kapanen/Brown/Hyman we're auditioning to build a whole new bottom half of our roster from scratch. We're not going to find replacements that are as good and as cheap unless you plan on waiting years developing them.
If somebody fits (contract and team chemistry) while being #1 in their role, they stay. Anyone who doesn't fit is who gets moved, no matter the cost because that's just what the price is for maintaining a window of cup contention. It's no different than moving out guys who lost their ice time to someone who won it from them, except it's about value/cap instead of value/TOI.

Dream free agent signings
Mats Sundin, Daniel Alfredsson, Erik Karlsson, Willie Nylander are all greedy Swedes who will abandon their teams the first chance they get to be selfish
I don't know why Karlsson would go to Vancouver where he has no one to play with, for a team that hasn't been in the playoffs forever, and isn't even going to pay him all that much. At least in California or Florida there's sunshine and surfing.
Karlsson may not stay in San jose, but Skinner definitely will stay in Buffalo just to keep his confidence.

I'm surprised Melnyk hasn't found a cheaper way to exit Bobby Ryan's contract. if a jerk who is so cheap he squeezes his nickels until a beaver squeals hasn't done it, I don't believe it can be done in the current era

You are trading Hutton for a 3rd and Pouliot for a 4th
I was looking at available and affordable RHD earlier. Alex Biega stood out, he's only played 1/3rd of your games.
What's a fair price for him? A 2019 4th, mid-round pick of St Louis? That's half-way between Boyle's 2nd rd, and McLeod's 7th rd trade returns.

D options after dumping Callys salary
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hedman77</b></div><div>Hmm.. probably someone who can skate fast and play well defensively.</div></div>
Here's a list you can sort by individual corsi (shots for minus shots against while the player is on the ice) at even strength this season
<a href="https://www.naturalstattrick.com/playerteams.php?fromseason=20182019&thruseason=20182019&stype=2&sit=ev&score=all&stdoi=std&rate=y&team=ALL&pos=D&loc=B&toi=200&gpfilt=gpteam&fd=&td=&tgp=100&lines=single" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://www.naturalstattrick.com/playerteams.php?fromseason=20182019&thruseason=20182019&stype=2&sit=ev&score=all&stdoi=std&rate=y&team=ALL&pos=D&loc=B&toi=200&gpfilt=gpteam&fd=&td=&tgp=100&lines=single</a>
That will highlight general defensive ability, and to find a good player on a bad team look to IPP (% chance that they get a point if their line scores)
#46 Scott Mayfield of NYI is 26 y/o RHD, but NYI are leading their division
#49 Erik Johnson of COL is 30 y/o RHD, solid stay-at-home but $6 for 4 more seasons and is a key part of a rising team currently on the playoff bubble
Pietrangelo STL, Klingberg DAL, Seeler MIN ... aren't going to sell while they have a chance at the playoffs
#57 Shattenkirk is 30 y/o RHD, $6.65 for 2 more seasons
PIT got #122 Petterson for Sprong in Dec, both picked in 2nd round a year apart and not in the NHL yet
Consider the top #124 to be top 4 D for their team. At that rank you could find a good balance of quality with a decent salary and term.
But there are outliers if you like risk. At #4, between Erik Karlsson and Morgan Rielly, there is Alex Biega 30 y/o with 16 GP doing 14:34 TOI at even strength this season. $825k for one more season.
#7 Radko Gudas 52 GP for 15:16 TOI at even strength. 28 y/o and $3.35 million for one more season
TBL for reference
#18 Hedman 39.91% IPP
#53 Coburn 36.36% IPP
#61 Sergachev 37.84% IPP
#79 Cernak 23.53% IPP
#125 McDonagh 42.37% IPP
#183 Stralman 32.35% IPP
#184 Girardi 28.21% IPP

Do you also have a specific type in mind? Like physical grinder or puck mover, offensive or stay-at-home
Pionk and Murphy are 2 righties in that list. You might be able to get by with a cheaper RD if you have a specific role in mind, because the top RD on any team might be too hard to get when you're limited to teams out of the playoffs, and with a contract that fits on Tampa.
