PLEADSE, PLEASE, PLEASE. I have heard this crap about Chara and Redden for years. Chara was UFA, didn't matter if Redden was a Senator or not. Chara was leaving as a UFA. By definition....UNRESTRICTED free agent. Paraphrasing your words. "He wasn't yours to keep."
Thanks goodness for the Sens that they only signed Redden for a three year extension...He was declining before he even signed an extension. And then after Redden three years extension was over for some unexplainable reason, Sather and the Rangers signed him to a six year contract as a UFA. 37 million. Made Redden the highest paid player in the AHL.</i></div></div><div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div><i>Surprised Phaneuf wasn't on the list...Starting next year having 7m a year for 4 years sure would look nice.

Agreed Chara was a free agent. Keep in mind at that time the sens told him they were only willing to pay him the same as redden. What I am saying is if Ottawa would have offered him the same as Boston and let Redden walk instead. Chara did like playing in Ottawa and at that time he was on a Stanley cup contending team where Boston was 5 years off.

And Ottawa literally gave up nothing for Phaneuf. Sure he is overpaid but at least he is an NHL player. All the guys Ottawa traded are AHL and they all had worse contracts.</i></div></div>
