Me too, but everyone except Brendan Gallagher, Antti Niemi and Jeff Petry has underperformed in Montreal and they usually rebound well after a poor season. The proof: they never had two consecutive playoff exits since 2001. And while the departure of Alex Galchenyuk hurts, they changed they entire coaching staff of the Laval Rocket and they have one of the best benches in the entire nhl with Ducharme and Richardson in the mix with Julien, Muller and Waite. Plus, Antti Niemi has rebounded in Montreal and is their best backup goalie they have had in a while. I like to go outside the norms for playoff predictions. Never go with what everyone says. Plus, they don't make the same mistakes as Detroit

Well, there is a little glimpse of hope for Montreal, Drouin finished the season pretty well for Montreal, AS A CENTER. He had 13 points in his 14 last games. He progressed
While Sergachev had 23 points in his first 35 games. And had 17 points in his last 44 games of the regular season. He regressed a bit.
The question lies on whether or not the two players will remain consistent. It was great for Tampa, because they got a puck moving defensman who can generate a ton of offense. But he had the easy shifts. And Jonathan Drouin got the harder shifts. Tampa will have won this trade if they can milk a consistent 40 point scorer who can play at least 17 minutes a night out of Sergachev. One good season doesn't guarantee you anything.

But do you know what Montreal will definitely not be worrying about for the next 3 years? Cap Space.

They're in the middle of a "re-tool" and if everything works out perfectly, they'll be a cup contender again in about....3 Years.

And if things do go perfectly....Danault, Domi, Armia and Gallagher will all be huge contributors to that success.

Which means the best case scenario has all 4 of them receiving massive raises in near future....because they took short-term CapFriendy deals while we had plenty of cap space.

So we can look forward to those pay raises in 3 years....but at the same time:

<strong>Weber </strong>- will be a geriatric care patient making $7,900,000 for another 5 years.
<strong>Price </strong>- may or may not look like Carey Price, but will still be making $10,500,000 for another 5 years.
<strong>Alzner</strong> - will have completed his transformation into a traffic cone, but still making $4,625,000 per year.
<strong>Shaw </strong> - will be the leagues wealthiest 4th line grinder, and still making $3,900,000 per year.
<strong>Mete, Poehling, Kotkaniemi, Juulsen, etc.</strong> will be finished or finishing their ELC's and looking for cash.

So ya....based on the Montreal's current situation....I think Bergy should've tried to get these guys on long-term deals....even if they were more expensive (and he definitely should have locked up the guys with consistent NHL track records....some of them were ripe for long-term discounts).

But if I'm being honest....I don't believe he thought about any of this before negotiating....because they all got signed pretty quick.

And I don't think he has a plan to get rid of the albatross (and future albatross) contracts on the roster....which will only get harder to move with time.

So, I don't think he will move Weber, Price and Shaw, because they are part of his core, and he is proud to have all three of them, which is kinda perplexing in the case of Shaw when he could've had Samuel Girard or Alex DeBrincat instead. But Alzner can be moved if Bergevin accepts to retain salary and if he includes a good player in the deal, which Winnipeg did with Zach Bogosian and Evander Kane. It turned out to be one of the best deals that Kevin cheveldayoff did. He still can be a servicable 5th or 6th defensman. I think he regrets the signing of Alzner. No wonder why he didn't sign a free agent to a hefty contract this summer.

Yeah, but he does the little things on the ice that you won't notice, but that are crucial in order to win hockey games. Things that Alex Galchenyuk won't do, like defensive coverage, winning faceoffs, and driving the play. He's the poor man's Patrice Bergeron. It's not just the points, man.

Montreal made a good choice because Jesperi Kotkaniemi has a great and diverse skillset. He only needs to improve his skating and put on some weight for one year and he's ready to go.
Arizona, on the other hand, picked a center who is not elite in his position. He is only elite defensively, and he doesn't have the hockey sense to make a team better on it's own. Sault Ste Marie was amazing.
Morgan Frost, Boris Katchouk, Taylor Raddysh, Rasmus Sandin and Conor Timmins all have much more potential. Hayton needs to prove me wrong next season and have an 80 + point season.

Not really. Here is Marc Bergevin's point of view,
We can't consider Galchenyuk a failure since he has established himself as a goalscorer in the nhl. However, he listened too much to his father, who coached him during his junior career with the Sarnia Sting. So much so that he texted him during intermissions (reported by his teamates) and saw him after home games (reported by multiple french canadian journalists). His relashionship with him seemed to blur the line between coaching and parenting. It was too much to handle for the Montreal Canadiens organisation, who wanted him to play a certain style that his father did not approve. Sure, he is the superior talent, but he didn't seem to value the team first policy of the Montreal Canadiens.
On the other hand, Domi has a father who understands what it's like to be an NHL dad, to not interfere with his son's playing career. Plus, he is a good role model, and a good teammate. Shane Doan praised Max as a player and as a teammate very recently.
I understand why he made the deal, unlike the PK Subban trade, where he made a bad one for one deal.

The trade propositions that I made are slightly different. For the Tomas Tatar trade, Maxime Lagacé was there instead of a 2018 first round pick. And for the Evander Kane trade, Danny O Ryan is there instead of Joachim Blichfeld and a first round pick is there instead of a conditionnal second round pick. However, it's weird to see trade propositions like that slightly becoming reality. Did it ever happen to you that one of your trade propositions slightly became reality ?

Not necessairly. That core has only an aging Jason Garrison who went in the Stanley cup final as a defenseman. That defense needs a true leader. A Keith, a Letang, a Doughty. Karlsson is right up on that list. Last year, the senators were THAT close to going to the Stanley cup Final. Now, they are almost at the bootom of the league, and they need a rebuild.
Also, in my trade proposition, The golden knights still have:
6 2018 rounders
8 2019 rounders
9 2020 rounders
So they are not out of luck if they decide to do that. They still have their future.
