Not necessairly because Montour needed a change of scenery anyway and he didn't want to play for the Ducks anymore.

(OTT/CBJ) - Duchene, Bergman for Abramov, Davidsson, 2019 1st and a conditional 2020 1st round pick
This is the kind of trade that can be really good or really bad for the Blue Jackets. It depends on whether or not they make the playoffs and whether or not Duchene resigns in Columbus. However, you can't say that Jarmo Kekalaienen is not taking risks. Some of them paid off big time. Like when he drafted Pierre-Luc Dubois instead of Jesse Puljujärvi. The man cares about his team, and I love it.

(MTL/PHI) - Froese, Schlemko for Folin, Weise
Marc Bergevin just fleeced the Chicago Blackhawks two years ago. The trade was: Phillip Danault (who was a number 4 center at the time) and a second round pick for Dale Weise and Tomas Fleischmann. Now the trade looks like: Phillip Danault (who is now a number 2 center), Alexander Romanov (who dominated in the world juniors) and now they get Dale Weise back (who has played the best hockey of his carrer in Montreal). What a difference two years can make for both teams.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Auston Matthews (5 Years / $11,640,250 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>cmuggym</b></div><div>We are seeing with Colorado how no matter how great one of your lines are if you don't have depth you lose. No i'll admit the core of players that will be eating the majority of the Leafs salary are all great players but if they are filling the rest of those spots with borderline NHLers their depth is going to be a huge weakness and get exposed big time against better teams. Not to mention injuries they are basicaly banking on no one getting hurt and we've seen with Matthews already he is prone to injuries. I'm genuinely curious to see how it all plays out</div></div>
Well, at least they have Frederik Andersen, Morgan Rielly and Nazem Kadri for a lot of years. And Nylander is tradable, his cap hit goes down next year. Marleau can go back to San Jose, i'm sure he would love to. But they have to trade someone. Plus, eight year contracts can become disasters, especially with older players. Matthews didn't sign that kind of contract. He wants to have leverage early on in his carrer, which is great for not only the Leafs, but if he ever decides to sign with another team, it would also be great. Exibit A: John Tavares. Tavares signing in Toronto was great for the Maples Leafs because they now have two number one centers, but it was also great for the New York Islanders, because they found their identity after Tavares left. If Matthews leaves, it would not be that bad for the Maple Leafs because they would have space to work with. Tavares will set a standard in the NHL.
As for Marner, they have a ton of options.

(CAR/MIN) - Rask for Niederreiter
Well, this is a pretty fair deal for once. Rask can take faceoffs, just like Lindholm does for Calgary. And just that can be a boost for the Wild. And Nino brings to the Hurricanes what they have lacked in recent years: scoring.

(ANA/DAL) - Cogliano for Shore
Man, Cogliano is as durable as they can get but Devin Shore is much younger. The Stars lack elite skill, besides Radulov, Seguin and Benn. Also, not enough good forward prospects. This was a good hockey trade for the Ducks, even if they don't make the playoffs. Cogliano was never an elite forward, only a durable one who has decent speed. Years of bad drafting caught up to the Stars. Sure, they have good D-men, a good goaltender and a great line, but they never made that next step.

Jake Muzzin
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blazingbat11</b></div><div>Hudon package for Martinez I'd be interested in doing!
From an LA perspective Lehkonen in a Muzzin deal definitely gets the conversation going imo. As a Habs fan I really don't want to move Lehkonen though. He is the Habs best defensive forward and would probably have 10 goals already this season with all the high-danger chances he's had, he just hasn't been able to bury them (shooting% 6.9...)</div></div>
And he brings tremendous work ethic and is one of their best penalty killers.
As for Muzzin, he is a much more interesting defender for the Canadiens than Martinez. Martinez is very inconsistent in terms of defensive play, and he is already 31. However, you don't want to break the chemistry that this Montreal team has right now. Marc Bergevin has less available pieces than expected because this 2018-19 edition is his Montreal team, from top to bottom. Only Gallagher and Price are remaining from the 2012 squad.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blazingbat11</b></div><div>I wouldn't mind getting Muzzin. Like you said however, he's their 2nd best Dman. I think it would cost more Hudon and two 2nd's (would still consider Olofsson a 2nd) to get him. I still personally feel that that's a lot of assets, but their not that substantial considering your trying to get a top pairing Dman.
LA would probably want a winger, but probably a more established young guy they know can play in the top 6 (Hudon isn't that). Wouldn't surprise me that Lehkonen would have to be in the deal for Muzzin. Don't know if I'd be willing to do that.</div></div>
Lehkonen is not a winger they want to trade. He is part of the ''finnish squad'' that helps Kotkaniemi, which also includes Joel Armia and Antti Niemi. Also, don't forget that Hudon had a 30 point rookie season. He is just not in the right place right now. Lehkonen is. He has top 6 potential, but the finnish squad, Shaw and Byron are players MB do not want to trade. Shaw is really solid with Drouin and Domi, and Byron is the mentor. Pretty similar wingers, but one is more defensively responsible (Lehkonen) and the other takes more risks, for better or worse (Hudon). Hudon is a fast skater. L.A. doesn't have enough of these. That's why they traded for Carl Hagelin.

He can slot into every trio imaginable. Maybe the term is too long, but to claim a player on waivers and to unlock his true potential is a work of genius (rare) by Marc Bergevin and the coaching staff.
He is the best kind of depth player imaginable. I'm sure lots of teams would love to have him.

(CAR / BUF) - Pu and picks for Skinner
Ok, this trade makes Buffalo much better. First of all, why Carolina traded Skinner ? They will not make the playoffs once again because of an awful trade. They seemed to be getting better, and now it's bad all over again in Carolina. Trading a 200 goal scorer for three round pick and a prospect. Not the worst trade you can do, but the best thing was to stay put. Watch him have 30 goals with Jack Eichel. At least, Botterill is trading for good linemates for Eichel and Middlestadt. Great redemption Buffalo !!!

Washington Capitals signed Tom Wilson (6 Years / $5,166,667 AAV)
Yep, the worst contract of the summer, my friends. Without Ovechkin and Kuznetsov, he's a mere 3rd liner. Unless they win another Stanley Cup, this is a huge loss for the Capitals. Yes, he stands up for his teammates. But he also is the second most penalised player in the league after Micheal Haley. And that is not good company. I hope the Capitals don't make another overpayment. Because if they stack bad deals on top of each other like Detroit or Chicago or Los Angeles did, this could get pretty nasty. At least, he had 50 points in 99 games if you count the playoffs. If he replicates that production for the next 6 years (which is almost impossible), it's a good contract.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rangersandislesfan</b></div><div>Look at that defence. It's not good enough.</div></div>
Yeah, I just wanted you to say it for the third time. Mete, Juulsen, Reilly and Ouellet all have some form of untapped potential. Mete was solid during the world juniors and continues to make great plays with his stick. He's a fast skater. Sure, his offense is still not good enough. But he can improve his offensive potential. Juulsen is a solid puck-mover who plays with the poise of a veteran already. Colorado did have a similar defense last year. Jeff Petry grew as a defensman and had carrer numbers. As for Alzner, Schlemko and Benn, sure they are not that good but some teams have defensmen like that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rangersandislesfan</b></div><div>But those teams at least have good 2nd line centres. Danault and Plekanec are the Habs' best real centres. Also add the fact that their defence isn't good enough.</div></div>
Danault can be a solid 2nd line center when healthy. I know, he isn't as offensively good as Pierre-Luc Dubois or Nico Hischier, but he is really defensively reliable and also good in faceoffs. He's a pretty underrated passer too. My ideal habs lineup at the start of the season (if Pacioretty isn't traded and Weber, Shaw and Byron are injured) would look like this:
Pacioretty - Danault - Hudon
Domi - Drouin - Gallagher
Lehkonen - Pleky - Armia
De La Rose/Deslauriers - Peca - Scherbak
Mete - Petry
Alzner - Juulsen
Reilly/Ouellet - Benn/Schlemko
I know, some of you will remind me once again that Drouin is not a center. But in the middle of good linemates like Domi and Gallagher, he can do some damage.

Yeah, but some teams were not carried by first line centers. They were more carried by wingers and a good defense. Look at New Jersey and Taylor Hall. Hall had 93 points. Hishier had 52. Look at Columbus. Panarin had 83 points. Pierre Luc Dubois had 48. Are Pierre-Luc Dubois and Nico Hischier first line centers ? No they aren't, but they perfectly complemented all-star wingers. Now that Panarin might be on his way out and that New Jersey lost more than they gained, the confidence of those teams will take a dip.
