STOP TRADING 8OA
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>asauer1122</b></div><div>The top 8 IMO is very high end. this was before the lottery, before i knew where buff was picking. Sabres would be foolish to trade the pick for player such as domi.</div></div>
They'd be foolish to not consider it, IMO. You are WAY overvaluing the draft pick and WAY overestimating the Sabres ability to get that pick right.
Between 2001 and 2015 there were 39 forwards taken with picks <strong>4-7</strong>. If we rearrange them by P/GP performance we can see the odds of getting a difference-maker:
Superstar (1.00+ P/GP): 0/39 = 0%
Elite (0.75 - 0.99): 8/39 = 20.5%
Top-6 (0.50 - 0.74): 17/39 = 43.6%
Bottom-6 (< 0.50): 14/39 = 35.9%
I did that research when Buffalo was slotted to get the 7th pick, but since they're now picking 8th lets repeat the procedure but with picks 8-10. Forwards only, from 2001 to 2015 inclusive:
Superstar (1.00+ P/GP): 0/27 = 0%
Elite (0.75 - 0.99): 2/27 = 7.4%
Top-6 (0.50 - 0.74): 11/27 = 40.7%
Bottom-6 (< 0.50): 14/27 = 51.9%
High picks are great, but (cap aside) if you have a chance to trade your #8 pick for an established player in his early 20's who scores 0.67 P/GP you shouldn't dismiss that as "foolish". Only 2 of the players in the Top-6 range matched or exceeded 0.67 P/GP, meaning that you typically have a 14.8% chance of getting a player equal to or better (offensively) than Domi with that pick. AGAIN, it depends on who is available there, but to dismiss the notion of trading the pick so hastily is foolish.
Edited to add the link to the previous (pick 4-7) research: <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/332985?post_id=1467976">https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/332985?post_id=1467976</a>

STOP TRADING 8OA
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Shibbal18</b></div><div>depending whos there at 8OA and depending who they get for it, its not a bad option, so theirs no reason for anyone to stop coming up with ideas on how to best utilize it. Its not a completely stupid idea, like thinking the sabres are trading Eichel, trading 8oa is actually realistic</div></div>
I'd like to think trading 8OA for a guy like Max Domi would work out well for the Sabres as long as his extension is reasonable. And, as you say, depending on who is available at eight.

Overpaying for Ehlers
Risto really helps up at defence.. would be the last piece we need
Mittel is boom or bust.. could help our 2nd biggest issue at center, still has top 6 potential could be worth a shot
The 8th overall could arguable value more value than Ehlers alone, but the risk factor really drops it.. but with Chevys draft record we r walking away with a stud
Jets say yes

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TanSor</b></div><div>You're forgetting that we aren't forced to trade Brodin. If teams aren't willing to pay what we're asking then we just keep him, no need to force a trade and settle for something like this</div></div>
Perhaps that becomes a deadline deal then. But you will have to move either Brodin or Dumba or Seattle will scoop one or the other up in the expansion draft and you get nothing.

Not interested in trading a top 10 pick for a guy in Mantha who has never scored more than 25 goals or 48 points and who is going to get overpaid and who already will be 26 before the season starts.
He will be 1 year younger than skinner was when he signed his deal and skinner had 244 goals when he signed his contract, mantha has 84

I dont think mantha or lindholm is for sale just too important to their clubs.
I dont want cirelli or Serg for that price.
I would love domi but I think they would have to add to take the 7th overall. But definitely think a package could work there.
Would love ehlers as well but again they would probably need to add for the 7th.
I think domi would be a very smart move for buffalo would give us a 2C who could transition to the wing in the future if cozens takes that spot or could keep cozens on the wing as well.

Trading Risto for Tuch
<a href="/users/Shootica" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Shootica</a>
<a href="/users/Vegasloveforthebills" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Vegasloveforthebills</a>
Wow it is amazing to see a conversation in which two people are exchanging thoughts without any denigration.
First, let me say, Ristolainen has played about 24 min/gm for at least 4 different coaches
He is big, he is young, he hits (he likes to hit), he plays in all situations, he plays against other teams top lines, he has four 40 pt seasons and he will not turn 26 until after next season starts.
Please check out how old Burns and Chara were before they had three 40 pt/seasons.
Second, how bad can the Buffalo defense be when they ranked 9th in the NHL for fewest 5 on 5 goals allowed.
Remember Hutton could not see the puck for about 6 weeks and went win-less over a 12 game stretch.
Third, we have not seen the best of Ristolainen.
Fourth, Buffalo has the cap space to sign a good top 6 forward so it will not be under great pressure to undersell any player.
Fifth, Does anyone expect Skinner to do as poorly next year. My goodness who was his centerman?
Finally, I love reading your exchange of ideas. Great thread.
<a href="/users/Boomer125" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Boomer125</a>
I completely agree, Tuch will not be as good for the Sabres and Ristolainen will excel for the Knights.

2 realistic trades- Playoff team
As a Buffalo fan, I would have done both deals, although I’m not sure that Minnesota would do this, Brodin is in many respects one of the best defenders of the league.

U can’t buy a player out & bring him back on a cheaper deal
Even in Okposo was bought out & we replaced that lineup spot with a league minimum player, we are still over the the Cap
Buying him out only saves us 2mil,
minus the Cap hit of who replaces him
Plus u have no 13th forward or 7th defenseman figured in
Even if we get a CBO for Okposo,
we still wouldn’t be under the Cap when u add 3 more players & figure in the bonuses from this season
Your signings seem fairly realistic (Larsson a little overpaid),
so (in addition to Okposo getting a CBO)...
think you’d either have to trade M.Johansson, or replace either Stastny or Dubnykwith a cheaper option

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TanSor</b></div><div>Wild say no. We don't have roster space for Johansson. It's not enough of a return to be worth it to move Brodin either (and we definitely shouldn't tack on Dubnyk to a Brodin trade and get a lower return)</div></div>
I don't mind it. MarJo played decently enough at center this year to be a band-aide while Mitts figures things out. I'd rather have Sameulsson as the LD prospect coming back though. The risk is somewhat on MN's side, but really Brodin is a rental and this is a much better return than the McCabe/Mitts/whatever trades that are on here a lot.
Re-sign Soucy to take Brodin's spot in the lineup and it's not a bad lineup.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JayTea</b></div><div>Brodin having a year left is irrelevant, unless he's told Wild management he's not happy and leaving. Not sure why people keep bringing that up for a core player the Wild don't seem to be actively shopping.
And yes, the Wild could make the playoffs. League average goaltending would have had them comfortably in a playoff spot this season. They're probably not going anywhere once they're in, but they could make it.</div></div>
Because IF they trade Brodin,
then how long he has left on his contract affects his value
For example:
You’d get back more if he had 3 years left on his deal
Isn’t that kind of obvious?

Fatigue affect is a thing, but if you're worried about him struggling bc those will usually be more challenging minutes I wouldn't be all that worried, QoT usually doesn't vary all that much, and doesn't have a huge affect

Hello. Ian Mitchell has played zero NHL games and per capfriendly isn't even under contract. Even if he signed this offseason, i find it unlikely chicago will throw him and boqvist into the fire together.
Anaheim does have a need at RHD and the pick will likely be 29-31st overall. Not exactly a lot to give up. They also get to dump 2.5 million in cash from Backes.

Overseas he was C, RW and then a LW. He was needed at LW on both CHI and PIT so it couldn't hurt to give it a go. Both teams were pretty deep at C (good or not is not up for me to judge....). Aho was nothing more than a winger in literally everyone's draft analysis.

Question from Sabres fan
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>I think that your trade is well thought out and right on value in isolation, but with Koivu on the verge of retirement and Rask no better than a #3C, the trade leaves Minnesota without a #1C <strong>OR</strong> a #2C.</div></div>
Minnesota could solve that in UFA, they can pull UFAs when they have to (Parise, Suter, Zucc, Vanek, etc) and also Johansson could be part of going the other way, maybe in place of Samuelsson or Asplund gets replaced with a slightly less potential prospect like Pekar? I don't know how burnt that bridge is but Granlund would be a great piece to pick up in UFA. He was the only Wild member I couldn't dislike.

I think that what you've achieved here is pretty good. Add to this the return from Sheary, Vesey and Girgensons (however small) and you have the potential for improving vastly over this year. The only problem is that I think Tuch costs you the 2020 first.

Put together a solid offer for Saad. He's a great two way forward, has speed and proven he can score being pace for 25 goals this season. If the Hawks trade him, we are doing so for picks and or prospects but will take on a cap dump for the remainder of the season.
