I like Gagne, he’s a 30-40 point centre. Edmonton wins this trade. No doubt.

Gagner has looked good while playing for Toronto this year. In the AHL. For my Marlies. It’s highly unlikely he’ll continue at a PPG pace in the NHL but he certainly still has skill and, for whatever reason, he fell out of favour in Vancouver despite 2 decent seasons recently.

It’s hard to pick a “winner” (Gagner has a better track record in the NHL to date, but is a bit older) but I can say the definitive loser in the trade is the Toronto Marlies who lose another Top-6 fwd (we lost Grundstrom in the Muzzin grade) as I am pretty sure Gagner will get a long look (again) in Edmonton. Wishing Sam all the best in his return.

I haven't caught Gagner playing for the last couple seasons, so I didn't really understand why he fell out of favor in Vancouver. Any Vancouver fans that can shed some light? He seemed to be doing well enough production wise to at least warrant a roster spot, even if he perhaps wasn't playing as well defensively. Is it a commitment/attitude or work ethic issue?

Might be a good move for Edmonton. Any skill they can get on the wings without adding additional salary is a plus.

@Hedman77 @ConnorMcHellebuyck2 This deal is like asking someone to break your five dollar bill and they give you a 4 quarters instead.

Now how funny would it be if Eberle signs back in Edmonton as an UFA this summer? You wouldn't be laughing than.

Also months ago I suggested the Gagner for Spooner trade in an ACGM, even before Spooner was sent to the minors. Though this trade is as close to a saw off as you can get, so no big deal that my GM thoughts came true.

I can only speak to his play in Toronto, and over the course of the season I’ve seen him become a more complete 200ft player - he even started backchecking and blocking shots in recent months (I’m not joking). Paired with his natural scoring ability, he was regularly one of our best forwards. I guess he realized he needs to do more in order to play in the NHL today.

Perhaps his time in Toronto with the Marlies was a wake-up call and he’ll finally actualize his 1st round pick potential. He’s never quite panned our but the skills and speed are still there.

So attitude is fine or at least improved, and he's showing more commitment to defense. Both good things for the Oilers.

How was his offensive ability with the Marlies? Was he playing as C or RW?

At first I thought this was great because I thought Ganger only had a year left on his contract. But no, he still has another year like Spooner, but 1 mil cheaper. So Oilers save 1mil in cap space and basically improve slightly because Ganger is more likely to fit/play hard for a role on the team. He's going to get a solid opportunity to play big minutes (probably try him out as a center or a RW with one of the 3 big centers). Great chance for him to turn his career around. But I would have preferred Spooner being traded for a draft pick or a prospect, simply to just open up the cap space.
