So Kessel nixed a deal to go home to Minnesota but he's going to be OK with Arizona ?
Also why are you giving away Olli Maata ?

There's no way he signs for 6*$9.5M, maybe 4 or 5*$9.5 but if you want him to give up 2 years of free agency it's going to be $10M+.
Marner is just going to keep pointing at Nylander's $6.9M for .68 PPG & Marner's own .93 PPG.

Leafs years in the playoffs with Kessel - 1 (in 6 seasons)
Leafs years in the playoffs with Marner - 3 (in 3 seasons)

TB has ~ 8.5 to sign Point. Tor ~14 to sign Marner, Kapanen and Johnsson. Smart GMs can take advantage.
Zaitsev to Buf wouldn't be bad for Buf and help out Tor.</div></div>
Don't disagree Zaitsev to Buffalo would be reasonable but the Leafs aren't going to cough up a prospect & a 2nd round pick as well for a 26 year old who might not even make the Leafs

Subban's possession and defensive point share stats disagree with your eyeball analysis. Also don't be silly, Leafs fans love Phil, after all he gave us Kapanen and Andersson and helped us obtain Jake Muzzin

Leafs are not going to pay someone to take Zaitsev, I know that he's a huge whipping boy but realistically he's a #4/5 Dman in his prime making about what #4/5Dmen make.
I don't understand why you would let Johnsson walk to sign Patrick Maroon and end up under the cap, just pay Johnsson. Maroon is a nice story this year but he's not as valuable as Johnsson

Shattenkirk isn't a big minutes RHD though, he's barely 20 minutes a game for his career and was less than 19 minutes last year, plus I think Toronto is looking more for a stay at home RHD to pair with Rielly and Shattenkirk really doesn't fit that bill. At $3.25M Shattenkirk is good value but I'm not sure he's the guy Toronto wants

NYR VAN TOR NSH
I don't think NYR would do the Trouba deal, with the retention they would effectively be paying Trouba close to $10M and while Perrault is a nice guy to have around he's 31 and makes over $4M. That deal means NYR giving up a second pairing RHD, a 1st & a top end prospect with 2 years left on his ELC while taking on over $14M in cap hit for a top pairing RHD and a 31 year old 3rd liner.
Also don't think Vancouver would do the Tanev deal as it stands, Kulikov is pretty terrible at this point & Poolman is almost 26 and hasn't showed yet that he's an NHLer

Okay pal, settle down. Top 2 RHD who just turned 30 has considerably more value than defensive liability RWer about to turn 32. Even without retention Nashville doesn't make that deal one for one

Subban has much more value than Kessel so IF Nashville considers this deal they sure in hell aren't retaining any salary. You want Nashville to effectively to pay $9M a year for a winger who is a defensive liability and is effectively 2 years older than Subban. No salary retention & toss in Fabbro and you might have a deal

That's way too much to give up for Hughes, also don't think anyone gives up two 2nds & a 4th for 55 game Tanev.

Marleau is not traded in this thread so not sure why you asked. Edmonton would trade for Brown because he's averaged 14 goals a year over the past 3 years and is a top end defender and PK man, honestly after Draisaitl he would be the Oilers 2nd best RW

Completely, I have seen numerous deals in these threads where Leafs are giving up assets for other teams to take Zaitsev.
Zaitsev is currently over paid by about $1M but with long term deals that's not unusual, by the last 2 seasons he'll be a bargain. Zaitsev is fine as a #4/5, he and Muzzin were solid when used together, as one hockey writer, can't remember who, said about Zaitsev "Toronto's best Dman without the puck, maybe their worst with the puck".

Still big lack of secondary scoring but $9M+ in cap space ?
Patience may be a virtue but they raised the bar this year for expectations so I don't think status quo is going to cut it.

There is no way Toronto is trading the Canucks a 1st & a 4th for one year of $4.35M in cap space, especially since in your scenario they have over $2M in space after the deals.

Think he's shortchanged the Leafs by giving away Kadri and Brown for Larsson, also roster is only required to be 20 players, it can't be more than 23 but can be 20-23:

MIN Trade Redux
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jfalstaff</b></div><div><em>Could</em>, but I wouldn't. Kadri's almost certainly not going to be re-signed, and Nylander, unlike Kapanen, is an effective center. He gives more options moving forward, in addition to being a better complement to Matthews.
Glad you're not trying to suggest Kappy led Matthews to new heights anymore tho...</div></div>
Not denying Nylander is more talented, just don't think he's $3.5-4M a year more talented, given the choice between Nylander at $7M or Kapanen and say, Brandon Montour or Travis Hamonic, at $7M I'll take the latter but taste is subjective.
Kadri has 3 years years left at $4.5 so not sure where you are going with <strong>resigning</strong> him. If you are talking about trading him he's not going to get given away because despite the media/fan rage 28 year old 2*30 goal scorers at $4.5M are very valuable commodities.
Nylander has yet to show that he is an effective center, he's fine at faceoffs and setting up wingers but he's lost defensively at center.
