Description
If Hughes goes 2nd it could change NYR approach to the offseason. If NYR wants Karlsson then Shattenkirk must go. He has a 10 team no trade list. That means out the 20 possible teams, 16 are playoff contenders and unlikely interested in him. That leaves 4 teams that are either retooling and out of playoffs. Out those 4 teams you hope that one is not on his list and I suspect that LA is one. LA needs another offensive element on D, and Kovalchuk is on the outs. NYR could use a Russian vet for incoming Russian youth and Ilya may contribute just enough for one season.

I can see Yzerman bring back Smith to Detroit and take his former Tampa player Namestnikov. Rangers take Zetterberg for financial purposes to make the trade happen. They may not even need to do that so who, but it’s an added incentive for Yzerman.

The Wild have been rumored to trade Zucker for a couple of seasons now. I’m not sure why as he is a very good player, but for fun I wanted to pull this deal where the Wild get a Minnesota native in Pionk who could add an offensive level to the D, and hopefully improve his defensive smarts. Vesey is inconsistent but adds depth to the Wild. Wild may want to rid themselves of Zucker’s contract and basically get two short term contract players for one. Aberg may be a project for NYR.

Finally the Rangers sign that offensive dman that they’ve been looking for and didn’t get with Shattenkirk. I’m not a fan of NYR getting him to such a big contract but in this scenario it makes sense.

These moves set NYR up well for the expansion draft and expiring contracts in 2 years for Kovalchuk, Staal, and Lundqvist.

As a Kings fan, I like the idea of trading Kovalchuk and opening a forward roster spot for a young guy coming in. However, the RD at the NHL-level is packed right now with players LA wants getting time. Doughty is obvious, but Matt Roy, Sean Walker, and Paul LaDue have all earned ice time as right-handed D-men who have come through the system. Taking on Shattenkirk doesn't make much sense.

Also, Karlsson will get more than $8.75 mil, especially in a state with a large state-income tax.

Karlsson's not signing for $8.75M, it's $10M minimum.

No way on Kovalchuk. Shattenkirk is a disaster on D.

Fair enough, but I’m not sure that Roy is good enough as full time, same with LaDue, but Walker I liked. I think he’ll be a bit of a diamond in the rough. I think having Kovalchuk as disgruntled wouldn’t help and trading him will be difficult. So, with NYR rumored to have had interest in Ilya in the past I figured this could work.

An agreed on Karlsson, probably $10.5M. Still doable.

Kovalchuk is a disaster on the team if he doesn’t get ice time and is useless to have for a team that will need to rebuild this coming year. Shattenkirk is weak on D, but a change of scenery could help and allow him to be a factor on offense an Doughty wouldn’t be relied upon too much.

Watching every Kings game this season, Roy actually really impressed me. He's the most NHL-ready defenseman out of the three, in my opinion. That being said, I think Walker has a slightly higher ceiling. I don't see LaDue being part of the team for much longer. The Kings seem pretty down on him, but to be fair, he didn't get that much of a shot to prove his worth. I think he'll be a good 3rd pairing defenseman on a team, able to help run the 2nd PP.

The Kings offseason situation is fascinating, watching as a fan. Everything on the back-end relies on what they do with Phaneuf and Martinez. Do they buyout Phaneuf? Is Martinez traded, or part of the team moving forward? If both of those guys go, then they might be interested in a player like Shattenkirk. However, the front office has also stated in season ticket holder meetings that they are specifically looking at bringing the average age of the team down to 25. And while the average would still drop with a Shattenkirk/Kovalchuk swap, it might not be enough for the liking of Kings brass.

Shattenkirk is a powerplay D and that is it. McLellan has to understand that Kovi is offense first, second and third. He might play a little but that is what you knew going in to a contract with him. Use him the correct way, not forcing him to do something he doesn't.

We’ll see about Roy, I’d like to see two young dmen become established, but I’m holding Roy apart from that still.

I agree on what you said about Phaneuf and Martinez. Martinez should stay, Phaneuf may be a buyout problem with cap.

As for the age...that’ll be tough. The older guys will be one year older on top of being quite old. I think next season the Kings must accept that it’s time to move on and basically trade every vet.
