23-24 NYR 1 MIL CAP INCREASE - REAL BIG SHAKEUP
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aedoran</b></div><div>I agree but I also think if Detroit has a shot at DeBrincat or Trouba at a decent price they have to at least consider it. With Lindstrom going back to Sweden that leaves Seider as Detroit's only RHD. They do have a couple of RHDs but they are player that can fill in if needed but you really don't want them in there for more than about 5 games. With Varna and Bertuzzi gone the Wings have one player that can consistently put up 30 goals a season. They have a couple players that might capable of putting up 30 goals but they aren't 30 g0al scorers until they do. it.</div></div>
Great post. In this scenario, DET would want a Trouba buyout as the only thing it would cost is money - and not much since the buyout is already paying Trouba. Not a perfect example but use Rangers buyout of Shattenkirk as an example - allowed Tampa to sign him to a 1 yr @ 1.75m deal. Only risk is would Trouba want to go to DET if on the open market - being from Michigan, close with Copp, etc would provide an edge. Then DET could have trade resources to target Debrincat.

I am assuming your comment is based off of tonyhzs' comment - suggesting that a deal with DET should be Goodrow and Trouba (with retention) for just a mid round draft pick. I cannot see happening.
If the Rangers were going to move on from both (I still feel Goodrow will not be on the team next year - I like the intangibles and some of the other unmeasurable items he brings to a team but the offense & defense he brings can be handled by a more cost-effective player) it would be separate transactions with the most likely being Goodrow traded and Trouba bought out. I can see a scenario with both traded but separate deals - trouba deal probably bringing back a player with a big (but not as big as Trouba's) contract (a "we'll trade you our contract albatross that fits a need on your team for your albatross that fits a need on our team" kind of deal)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jfstompers</b></div><div>That's crazy, dudes overpaid a little bit he isn't worthless</div></div>
I agree he is not worthless and how overpaid he is depends on how you are determining "overpayment" - is someone just looking solely at offensive stats, off & def stats, analytics only, are you including the unmeasurable intangibles, etc. Honestly both a buyout or a trade are pipe dreams but if 1 were to happen the buyout would be the most likely - easiest to do and you know exactly what you are initially going to get (cap space). Then have to worry about utilizing that space correctly.

As long as you plan to eat salary, apply the buyout cost to retention, and shorten the cap hit time. Detroit will gladly give a 4th for Trouba at 5.8 million.</div></div>
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep that note and setup version 2 of the team with Trouba still on it and a version 3 with a Trouba trade.
If the Trouba buyout is off the table and we are looking at trade option only, I don't think NYR would perform a salary retention trade with an extremely modest return due to optics - easier pill to swallow when you can say "we signed multiple players with the money saved from the buyout". Like I stated, less than 1% chance a buyout would be performed - I would prob say a very slim chance of a trade as well due to his wife and her job.

As stated, Goodrow to DET was just a suggestion. I only picked DET to avoid the typical "send everyone to ANA or AZ". with that said, his 15 team no trade could possibly contain DET and a host of the other teams I would have considered (BUF for example of team close to playoffs, CHI as a team who needs salary to get to cap floor).

Kane with the bad hip and uncertainty of surgery being required should not be signed for more than 1 or 2 years @ 2 million a year.
Goodrow will get traded for draft pick - pure salary dump. DET would be a solid landing spot but could be any team with cap space and close to contending or a team that needs to spend to get to cap floor (i.e. CHI).
Mikkola is not signing for that term - he will get at least the same he was making this past year.
I think Cuylie will make the team before Othmann. Cuylie is ready for a bottom 6 role while Othmann can use a year in AHL - can experiment with him on the right side.

can't sign Jones to that deal - RFA qualifying offer has to be a minimum of a 5% increase from previous salary so lowest it can be is 971250. Same thing for Emberson - minimum has to be 895000
Miller is going to get a deal similar to Ryan Lindgren - start point at a minimum is 3yr @ 3mil
Othmann will need to have an impressive camp to make the team. Honestly would probably be better for him to get 1 year of AHL under his belt. Cuylie makes the team.
Can't see this trade happening - looks like Rangers are getting Dube, Kidney, and Farrell for LAF and a 2nd rd pick - no way CAL or MON does this.
NYR will look to trade Goodrow in a salary dump deal. Like the player but the cost is prohibitive. They can use that 3.6mil to sign players who can perform same type of role with similar stats at better price points

can't see NYR re-signing Hajek - been there long enough and hasn't made an imprint on the team (they prefer Harpur over him). That money can be used for a younger D with more potential.
Not signing Kane for anything more than 2mil a year knowing he was hurt this past season, needs work done on his hip, most likely not available for a portion of the season, etc.
Jets are going to focus on trying to move Scheifele and Wheeler - can't see them trading Connor and Ehlers for that package. NYR will look to trade Goodrow in more of a salary dump trade to free up much needed space.

can't sign Jones to that contract - RFA rules state he has to be qualified with at least a 5% raise so looking at a start point close to a 975K minimum.
No way Rangers make that Ehlers trade.
Re-sign LAF same deal as Kakko (2 yr @ 2.1mil). Re-sign Miller to deal a little higher than Lindgren (start point 3yr @ 4mil).
Only pursue Kane if he is actually healthy and will take a 1 year deal under 2mil.
Bjugstad is not going to sign for less than what he was making this year - start point for him will be at least 950K.

Guentzel to NYR makes sense as a rental - agree with Blasphem_ Guy on that one. Trade package will be different though. Rangers will def push hard to trade Goodrow during the offseason - solid player but too much money for a 4th line role. Can take that and get 2 players that are younger, play the same style, and will put some similar offensive totals.
Tarasenko is not signing at that salary. Very weak FA class at RW. He may not get 7.5 mil a year again but he won't need to settle for anything under 5 mil.
Rangers aren't signing Brassard - after the serious injury he suffered near end of season he is most likely calling it a career.

<a href="/users/genothegoat" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@genothegoat</a>: can't sign Jones for 850K. RFA rules state minimum offer for player has to be at least a 5% raise - so minimum for Jones would be $971,250
@ Doobs92: rangers are not resigning Hajek - has had more than enough chances. No trade value and arbitration eligible.
Miller will get deal similar to Lindgren (3yrs @ 3mil). Spot on with LAF - same deal as Kakko.
Othmann will need to have an extremely impressive camp - honestly would be better if he gets 1 year of AHL under his belt. Cuylie will make the team.
not signing Gavrikov for 4mil a year to be 3rd pair D. Not re-signing Motte - luxury the team can't afford. Team still doesn't have enough scoring from the right side. So will look into salary dump trade of Goodrow and take that money and hopefully strike some gold finding a decent 2 way RW

instead of Goodrow to the Sharks, maybe a team closer to playoff contention that has cup space and can use a vet presence would work better - perhaps DET
Maybe swap Brassard for Bjugstad - Bjugstad much younger, much bigger, and will only cost a little more

Rangers respectfully decline that trade - not taking on an older player with 2 more years at $11 mil. Rangers will need to trade Trouba soon but not this soon and not for more salary.

Saw a couple of stories after Subban retired that the rangers were considering offering him a PTO. Wonder what that locker room would have been like if that actually happened.
I'm really hoping Kravs matured enough and plays at a level high enough to at least put aside "1st round bust" talks aside for a bit.

Like the lines. I just hope the kid line will get more than 12-14 minutes a game since you know they aren't going to see any time on PP or PK. Those extra couple of minutes will keep the big guns fresher throughout the year.
3 things I wish the Rangers did not do - extend Reaves when they acquired him, re-sign Gauthier, and rush to sign Carpenter on 2nd day of FA. Could have used all or most of Reaves' $1.75 mil to get a veteran to provide cover for Jones (i.e. Smith signed with the Devils for 2 X 1mil). Money left over from that and the 800k from Gauthier they could have signed Motte to that 1 year $1.35 mil deal. Not signing Carpenter, they would have had 950,000 left - some really solid options they could signed to 1-year deals or PTOs later on

Rangers won't trade Trouba this year. That will most likely happen next year's draft - Rangers have Chytl RFA arbitration eligible and Miller, Jones, and LAF as RFA - not to mention UFA Kane they would want to re-sign.
I don't think Rangers would sign Milano to that huge of a contract - at this point if they were to sign him it would be more like a 1 year prove it deal b/t 1 and 1.5 mil - plus they wouldn't want to tie up that much money as that 4mil would help toward retaining Kane.
To get AZ to perform salary retention for Kane I think Rempe, Hajek, gauthier, and a draft pick would work - AZ can save Chychrun for a bigger deal.
Trouba not traded then no need for Savard

What would Jim Benning do
Think the Rangers would make that deal if the pick is upgraded to 2nd round. lose a solid 2-way experienced player in Goodrow but gain a young C with potential. Rangers gain 2+ mill in cap space in this deal - will be vital for a blockbuster trade later on (such as Patrick Kane)
Rest of the deals look pretty solid as well.

MY 22-23 NYR TAKE 1
Thanks for the feedback
Rask is much better than Carpenter - Carpenter was not a great signing as there were much better all-around players available later on in FA who signed for the same amount of money. My thinking with Milano is someone with offensive potential who could move into top 6 in the event one of LAF, Kakko, or Kravtsov struggles (and the potential of either Kakko or Kravtsov being traded).
With the Rangers needlessly extending Reaves last year that has handcuffed them from getting what they really needed - a veteran left side D. (side note - could have been more aggressive with PTO for the few that were left like DeKeyser, DeHaan, etc instead of Vesey - not that I don't like Vesey but where is he really going to fit). My logic was trading a disgruntled RD, a LD who has never been able to stay in the lineup, and a RW who they should never have re-signed in the 1st place for a left side D who has shown he can play and defensive depth for the minor was solid. Picking up Stanley doesn't mean Jones doesn't play - just provides another option.
In your posted lineup who is on the bench - I'm assuming the forwards are Blais, Hunt, Gauthier, and Reaves which would leave them with 16 forwards. Who is the 7th D (Hajek?). If Othmann and Vesey stay 2 of the forwards have to go - which ones would you get rid of and where (i.e. Hunt and Gauthier would have to go through waivers - their contracts aren't that prohibitive that they would not be claimed - losing an asset for nothing

I like that extra cap space for potential deadline deals,
