That's $33,575,000 in cap-space ... for 7 depth players ... with multi-year terms.
Almost $5,000,000 per player ... and 42% of Jim's salary cap.
Gotta respect Jim though ... at least he cares about Vancouver's homeless problem.

Myers is just the newest, highest paid and longest tenured person to be taken off the streets in Canuck land, but yeahhhhh. They done goofed.

Tampa Bay Lightning signed Andrei Vasilevskiy (8 Years / $9,500,000 AAV)

Quoting: drewjenks

There's one major problem with all these massive goalie contracts ...
Goaltender performance is ASTRONOMICALLY less predictable than player performance.
Imagine if McDavid stayed 100% healthy next year ... played a full 82 games ... and had a total of 30 points on the season.
That's goaltenders in a nutshell ... they can all go from a Vezina quality season to an average season (or worse) without warning.
Price has gone back and fourth like 4 times in his career (and he's the best goalie of the past decade).

This is exactly the way I look at it, goalies are just too unpredictable to spend this much on.
Goalies can have the biggest effect on their team, but because of how easily that effect can swing from positive to negative, it's hard to place this much value on them. Also, GMs pay for wins, goals against average and save percentage, but it's hard to strip away how much impact a goalie had on those stats versus the rest of their team. Even if you try and use some advanced metrics to try and tease out what a goalie contributes, those numbers can vary wildly from one year to the next.
I get that Vasilevsky performs well in the stats that generally get goalies big pay days, and he is a very good goalie, but I just don't think any goalie is enough better than the average to, or consistent enough, to justify this large of a commitment.
Also, it's may be a little unfair to goalies in general, but the reality is there are so many good goalies now that the average goalie is very good. Keeping the position flexible seems like a legitimate option unless you can be as lucky as Anaheim and have the best goalie in the league locked up for a very reasonable cap hit.

Deal Or No Deal - NYR Edition
- No to the Vancouver trade, Rasanen isn't great, but he was always expected to be a long-term project, we shouldn't give up on him yet.
- Edmonton deal is meh, I consider it simply to clear up contract/roster spots at the AHL, but I doubt anyteam is looking to aquire a bunch of meh players/prospects for a 3rd.
- HELL no to the Detroit trade. Ceci was bad in Ottawa, but we should be excited to see what he can do in Toronto when he's paired with an NHLer for a change. Not to mention you're ditching SDA in that deal for nothing.
- And then what the heck is that NYR trade. You don't actually have cap savings cause DeAngelo is likely to take up that extra cap.Not to mention Dermott > DeAngelo anyways. Buch/Hyman is a bit of a wash, but I guess I'd take Buch for his age, but we don't know if he'd mesh with our team, and that doesn't account for the additional movement of prospects, most notably Korshkov.

Up, up, and away . . . and everybody thought that Toronto had cap problems. And then Las Vegas.
Four million plus over and still Lemieux and De Angelo to sign. One trade ain't gonna do it, unless they move Shattenkirk with virtually nothing coming back.

(TOR/STL) - Borgman for Schmaltz

Quoting: drewjenks

LOL yeap ...
I almost wrote the same comment but I didn't want the backlash to put my family in danger ...
- Kadri just became an ELITE second line center overnight
- Brown is officially a lock for 25 goals / 50 points + upside
- Zaitsev is a clear top 4 D who wasn't being used properly
- Leivo is slowly replacing Boeser as Vancouvers #1 sniper
- Sparks will be taking Fleury's job within a season or two
And this is just another big L for Dubas ....

I like Kadri but he certainly was a big difference offensively....except when he played LW on the PP. He's between 2C and 3C. I thought that was a a great trade. Kerfoot and Kadri can considered somewhat equal and the Leaf got a retained Barrie for Rosen. I found Zaitsev OK but like the fact that Leafs will have 4.5m in cap next summer, wonderful. Leafs may not be as good as last year due to UFA defections....what can you do, but I think Dubas has had a fine off season. Of course the Marner contract still. has be resolved ...but so are other teams.

For comparison, Tanev got 3.5 x 6 w/ a modified NTC and Sissons was even more productive.

Leveraging Assets and Exploiting the Less Fortunate

Quoting: drewjenks

What? Why?
Come on man stop being biased !!!!
I hate people like you.
Zero objectivity

No I'm very objective. First you want the best player in the league (+ 2.5 retention) one of thier best prospects a 2nd and a 3rd for Matthews, SDA, Timashov, and Petan. Then you want Ehlers for Nylander (1for 1 is fair) but you want them to retain aswell plus give up their best prospect (also retaining) and one of their best players (Connor) and a 5th, for essentially garbage! Korshkov has no value right now Lindgren is an ok prospect but nothing special and Marincin also has zero value. And it keeps getting better as you wanna trade Kerfoot for Rakell (Anaheim's best foward again with retention) plus their only RHD (more retention) aswell as a 1st (they are rebuilding) and a 5th for Kerfoot (who's inferior too Rakell, as is Dermott to Manson) Ceci has no value right now, and Gravel again no value. Couturier (once again retaining) frost, one of Philadelphia's best prospects with money retained a 2nd and a 4th, for once again inferior players Hyman (who has more value to the leafs) Moore who's good but his ceiling is likely as a 3rd liner maybe a 2nd liner if everything goes right (although playing with Matthews will help bring his stats up if he gets the chance while Hyman is injured) Kaskisuo who is an AHL goalie (they have a stud young goalie named Hart you should check him out) and Herzog (nothing special there at least not yet). Arvidsson ome of the best value contracts in the league is there any point im pointing out the ridiculousness of all of the retention? Ekholm a 3rd and a 5th for Kapanen, Engval (who we will need for the next few years as he will be a cheap bottom 6 foward, but is good) GOAT who has very little value if any at all same for Luchuk (who is an AHL player). And you want Carolina to give up 2 1st's, a 3rd a 4th and a 5th for Greenway (who looks like he could be good in the NHL one day) Dzierkals, who hasn't proven anything yet (in the AHL) Bobylev (there could be something there but we need more time\bigger sample size to draw from) same with O'Connell. All of these trades are so bad they wouldn't even get accepted on NHL19. I'm not the one being biased here. Like I said every team rejects these trade proposals and likely block your number.

I agree with the Pettersson contract if he continues to get better after his rookie season. You see what guys are getting out of their entry level deals right now as a % of the cap. In two years when Pettersson is due his contract the cap will be going up significantly due to the new TV contracts and Seatle being in the league.
