I agree with the Pettersson contract if he continues to get better after his rookie season. You see what guys are getting out of their entry level deals right now as a % of the cap. In two years when Pettersson is due his contract the cap will be going up significantly due to the new TV contracts and Seatle being in the league.

Yeah pretty much ... but an amazing GM would still be 20 million over the cap ... so there will have to be some tough decisions.

Some good players will have to be traded ... or some futures will have to be dumped with the bad contracts.

Virtanen and Goldobin will have to be great to get that money
Biega will not get paid that much, 7th d at best so paid < 1 mil (plus he would be 32/33 when this happens)
Tanev is injured too much to get paid that, i suspect he will be traded or walks to FA
Demko will get paid 7 mil before markstrom.
if Petey wants McDavid money he'd better be putting up McDavid stats. 100+ points for at least 2 seasons

Ok you're right ... so lets remove:

$2,000,000 from Goldobin
$2,000,000 from Virtanen
$1,000,000 from Biega
$3,000,000 from Tanev (or assume his replacement costs $3,000,000)
$3,000,000 from Markstrom
$2,000,000 from Pettersson

What's our plan for removing the next $17,000,000?

also take out Rousell, Beagle and Sutter as their contracts will have expired by the time Hughes, Demko and Petterson re-sign so subtract $10,375,000 as they will not be renewed. and Eriksson with 1 year left will be bought out same as spooner was this year so thats another $5,000,000 off the books so now you're only 1.625 mill over the cap.

when pettersson and hughes are due for resigning (the end of the 20-21season) the canucks have over 20m coming off the cap from the expiring contracts of pearson, sutter, baertschi, edler, benn, spooner(buyout) goldobin (4m)is probably gone(with picks to help get rid of Eriksson's contract) they have draft picks/prospects(Podkolzin) ready to fill some of the holes created by the expiring contracts . they are not going to sign markstrom for that much so they can save another 4-5m signing a veteran back up(like Edmonton did with smith) both beagle and roussel's ntc are 5 team after that season so a lot easier to trade if needed. not as dire as you made it out to be for sure

1. Sutter will have expired ... but not Roussel or Beagle (they both have 3 years left).
2. You have to replace Sutter with someone. If we assume it's an ELC than we can subtract $3,500,000 for Sutter.
3. Spooners buyout will come off the books in 2 years, so we can subtract $1,030,000 for him.
4. Buying out the Eriksson with 1 year left results in a $4,000,000 penalty in the final year of his contract, so we can subtract $2,000,000 for him.

So in total ... we can subtract $6,530,000 for all of the reasons you mentioned.

That still leaves us $10,470,000 over the cap.

That caps going up more than 2 mill in the next year and seatle takes a player and Pearson and baertchi come off the books incomes poldkozin and a player like kole lind or Tyler madden or nils hoglander that’s how we save the 10 mil @drewjenks and rousell and beagle could be traded

That's what we thought this year ... and it only went up 2 million.
