I know that, you know that, they know that.
Searching for ex Leafs with heart and skill for a Cup run is hard to do.
Funny thing is, these players scored more playoff goals (and more goalie wins) than the real Leafs did this year.

Paying $10 million per year for two 3rd line centers is nothing to be proud of.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CW_73</b></div><div> So did Dubois vs Edmonton, so what exactly does this solve for Boston? </div></div>
PLD is on a team with better depth at center than the B's. So obviously it'll reflect on his stats.
Milk cartons in Boston should have Coyle and Zacha's picture.

It is a hot take, 1 year with a new team is too early to judge on making $8.5 million.
Ask the Flames who has the worst contract, lol...Huberdeau by a mile and a half.

Leafs last summer didn't resign Kerfoot or Bunting and replaced them with Bert and Domi.
Now was it truly an upgrade or downgrade>?

Scenario Where Marner Stays
I don't think Bert will be back, he had a super slow start to the season and barely earned his top 6 forward spot.

Rebuilding a team with UFAs is a mistake.
1. UFAs are either overpaid or get too many years...sometimes both, yikes !!!!
2. Building a team with other teams unwanted spare parts stinks of desperation and poor management.
3. One year's UFA crop can be full of garbage while the next summer could have a gem. Never leave fate to randomness.

If...a big IF... Marners allows himself to be traded (and the teams he likes actually want him AND Tre can get fair market trade value...too many if's, Marner isn't getting trade. period.) I believe he would want to go to another big bright city, so California State teams, Florida State teams, New York state teams and maybe to reunite with Dubas in Pitts.
Utah, LOL.
Easy pass for Marner.

Keeping Marner for one more year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>Despite the nonsense from the mob on this site, everyone wants Marner. Fans just want him for essentially nothing. Why would St Louis want him? He's 27 years old and way better than anyone on their team. However, they don't have a top defenceman. So why would TO trade him to St Louis?
Parakyo is 2nd pair defenceman. Krug sucks, Faulk sucks and no one else there matters.
I do think they can add Roy or Pesce (hopefully Roy because he's not massively overrated.) in FA either player is a very good addition. They have 18 million to fill out the roster. Roy at 6 or less would be a good move. After that, if you can get Domi at 4 or less, I would do that as well. And then just find value where you can.
The priority is a new coach. Keefe is not a winner in the NHL and he was outcoached every year in the playoffs. Never adjusts, he's done. Shanahan doesn't handle coaches right. Babs should have been fired when he lost a game 7 to Boston for the 2nd year in a row. Keefe should have been fired after last year's playoffs.
I hope MLSE fires Shanahan, Treliving and the entire coaching staff. Find someone good to take over and find a proper coaching staff.</div></div>
Looking around the League, the Stars could be a potential trade partner, Lundvist is an upcoming Top 4 Dman and Dallas might go into the "win" now mode if they can't get into the Cup Finals this year.
And yea, Marner stays, it's fun to try to make it work, but truthfully the added salary cap space doesn't get the Leafs enough $$ to fix their D while finding a top 6 RW'er replacement.

Keeping Marner for one more year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>Likely. If he's willing to move and you can get good value then maybe trade him but if you can't get good value, you have to keep him. B</div></div>
And if you trade him, ideally it should be for a Dman, because the Leafs Dcore will not get a sudden improvement by adding any Dmen from this summer's weak UFA selection.
And I don't hear any rumors of any top pair Dman having trade bait potential. Maybe Stl but why would they want Marner and why would Marner want to go there.

no. PLD sucks right now. based on how he played this season he would have been a health bomb in boston because he doesn't skate.
and again, the NHL has a salary cap. contracts matter. hes negative value.</div></div>
First time he has ever had his minutes cut down to middle 6 center, playing inbetween Kopitar and Daneult can't be easy.
Also 3rd time in 5 years his been on a new team/coach.

Treliving Turn Around
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KPasty</b></div><div>Softer maybe. But allows you to recoup some production you're missing up front and allows you to spend on your D core to improve there. Addition by subtraction.</div></div>
The UFA Dmen this summer will not help fix the Leafs, it's a very weak selection and it'll end up being a buyers market, meaning teams will overpay by giving a third pair Dmen Top 3 type money.
So if a trade for Marner is possible (98% sure Marner will veto any and all trades) a Dmen needs to be involved.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dca919</b></div><div><strong>No they aren't like the Caps as the Caps kept winning their 1st round series. </strong>
In 2015 they beat the Islanders 4-3 in that series. Then lost to the Rangers in 7 (losing 2 games in OT to the President's Trophy winners).
In 2016 they beat the Flyers 4-2 in that series. Then lost to the Pens (the eventual Stanley Cup Champs in 6 (losing 2 games in OT).
In 2017 they beat the Leafs 4-2 in that series. Then lost to the Pens (the eventual Stanley Cup Champs) in 7.
In 2018 they won the Cup.
As far as the Leafs, they are going on coach #5 (as they had those three I listed plus Peter Horachek as interim in 2015)....so you can keep blaming the coach, but enjoy those 1st round exits.</div></div>
This isn't the 1980s were teams proudly hang up banners for being Divisional winner, 3 wins or 11 wins, doesn't matter, Stanley Cup Finals only matter.
Btw, Leafs lose to the B's, Tbay who won the Cup and Flo, Habs(Cup finalists) .
