Accept it, you'll be happier for it.</div></div>
Thinking of his contract as a percentage is definitely a better approach but it doesn't change the sting. Championship rosters capitalize on extracting value from that remaining 20% of the cap, 3.99% of it going to JJ is the opposite of capitalizing.

Johnson Sucks
It doesn't seem like GMJR is looking to replace Johnson, which is nuts, but apparently true.
Pitt definitely doesn't want to buy him out and he has absolutely no trade value.
It made me think that maybe the best option is to retain a small portion of his salary, even up to 33%.
If Pitt buries him in the AHL, they only save about a million. If they buy him out, they save more but the penalty is longer.
Maybe the should be seeking to ship him out with another player, maybe Murray? Then keep a portion of his contract.
Thoughts?

He actually barely played with Crosby this year.
Take a look at the line combos for 19-20
<a href="https://frozenpool.dobbersports.com/players/bryan-rust" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://frozenpool.dobbersports.com/players/bryan-rust</a>
To your point, he did play with Malkin and Guentzal so he wasn't necessarily driving play. But I do find it interesting that as his minutes went up and the quality of his line mate increased, his performance improved. I know that seems obvious, but some guys shrink in an increased role. Rust got better, to me, that speaks to his value.
Look at his Q2 production. He actually played his best when Sid wasn't even in the line up.

I think Rust is better than you're giving him credit for but I agree that a straight up trade for Domi is unrealistic.
This was Rust's best season but he's proven to be a pretty consistent goal scorer over the last 4 seasons. I do expect his goal total to decrease next season as he was scoring at nearly an 18% clip.
Even so, his shooting % sits at about 15% over the last four years. He shoots a little over 2 shots per game and even if he regresses back to 15% he's good for 25 goals in a 82 game season. (For context- league average for a good shooting percentage is about 12.5%).
A 25 goal scorer locked in at 3.5 M for 2 more years is a very good player.

I agree that the Detroit trade isn't fair value for Hronek which makes me wonder, what is Filip Hronek actually worth?
I see Murray's value like this:
Max value - First Round Pick
Good value - 2 - Second Round Picks
Fair Value - Second Round + Third Round pick
I think the fact that he's an RFA push his value up a bit, but the fact that he is unsigned and wants a raise drives his value down. Add in that there are going to be a lot of goalies available in the next few weeks and I think the Pitt will get "Fair Value" at best. Timing is important, because as soon as other options enter the room Murray's value will decrease.
ALL THIS TO SAY - if that's Murray's value, what is Hronek's? I'm interested to know how far off the value is.

I don't know what to think of it. One of the only things that's making me think he has a bit more potential is the John Marino trade last year.
If there's anything I can say about JR it's that he on occasion does make a really intelligent depth trade. I just have no idea when those are happening.

I definitely think Pittsburgh should move Murray, but I don't think there will be a goalie with term being returned to them. One of the main reasons they need to trade one of them is in preparation for the expansion draft.
Having said that, this would be a stupid move for Pittsburgh so it's not totally unrealistic based on GMJRs inability to function in reality.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Capitalfail67</b></div><div>serious question how much better is Kappy than Kuhun.... lol like he could have just avoided all this</div></div>
I thought Kuhun was fitting in nicely. I don't know what his next contract will look like, but I bet it would have been less than 3.2 and we clearly would have kept the pick.
You knew this whole off season was gonna go sideways when GMJR stood by Jack Johnson once again after one of the worst post season performances I've ever seen. Dude just doesn't understand what needs to be fixed.
I would have much rather kept Kuhun and used the 1st to dump the JJ contract. Imagine trading it with JJ for like a 3rd round pick or something... all that sounds better than this.
You knew it was gonna cost Pitt a lot to fix the error of the JJ contract but I had no idea it would be this bad, the GM refuses to even acknowledge it as a problem.

That doesn't seem unreasonable but it's kinda a wash on the McCann for Bennett side isn't it?
I really have no idea what Murray will fetch, but I think the 2020 2nd and the 2021 3rd isn't too far off. Would love to get two 2nds or a 1st but unfortunately it seems like GMJR is the only person who would trade a 1st for Murray...

I completely agree. I think they could have paid less for what they got. GMJR has to have a rep around the league as the first place to go if you want 1st Round picks.
If the team doesn't look right half way through next year they have to make a complete change in the front office. The 2022 draft is shaping up to be really solid and this dude's about to trade our first for Jack Johnson 2.0.

First things first, Toronto won the trade.
Referring to Hallander as a top 3 organizational asset is true, but a bit off base. It's probably better to think of him in the vacuum of young forward with legit NHL potential - a top 6 ceiling but most likely more like top 9 potential. All that to say, a pretty valuable if you're up against the cap but by no means a guarantee.
The 15th overall pick is what really shook me, specifically in a draft this deep. My hope was that Pittsburgh would begin the process of a soft transition into building their prospect pool.
GMJR has absolutely zero interest in preparing for the transition after Malkin's contract expires and that's what has me super concerned. I get the idea of win now, but have any of these moves actually improved their chances of winning? They've been bounced in two straight playoff series.

Honest question coming from a Pens fan.
What is Murray's value?
A young goalie with two Stanley Cups can't be worth nothing. I clearly recognize his less than stellar performance since then, but the Pens as a whole haven't been that great either. Don't you think a change of scenario could benefit the guy?
Also, he's an RFA. Sure, he may want a large contract but a restricted cap and arbitration are working against him right?
I don't think this is a huge over pay for him but am interested to hear what other's think his perceived value is.

Can anyone do the full circle transaction history on those player paths?

What's the story on Lidgren? I'm reading he's an analytics darling?
Is this JRs attempt to fix the Jack Johnson problem with a stable partner? He just keeps doubling down on terrible investments.

Pittsburgh Penguins signed Marcus Pettersson (5 Years / $4,025,175 AAV)
Pens fan here. My opinion is just as valuable / worthless as everyone else's here.
I think this is a slight but acceptable overpayment.
All the above mentioned comparables exhibit the same basic characteristics of this contract: this is the cost of a 2nd pairing defenseman.
I don't think Pettersson is anywhere near the best 2nd pairing Dman and also don't think he's a bum. What I DO know is that right now his chemistry with his team mates and his buy-in to Pittsburgh's system is working. That's more than I can say for other defenders who have passed through in recent years.
Ultimately he's a relatively young guy who may pan out, and maybe his contract is a great deal in 3 years, maybe its a trash deal in 3 years; but at the end of it all, if Pitt can make deep runs in the post season or navigate the rest of the roster moves and future signings with better clarity than this is simply what had to be done.
What were the other options? Not sign the dude? Create a charade? Have this get in the way of resigning our goalies? Alienate the relationship with the coach? Disrupt locker room chemistry?
**** it, just give him a borderline deal and see if it works.
There are more factors to consider than eye ball tests, stats, advanced metrics etc.

Is this pure speculation? Do people think this is realistic? Puljujärvi was a top tier draft pick, even if Edmonton has soured on him, is his value really that low??

Thanks man. The most appealing part of this plan is refilling the prospect pool simultaneous to keeping a cup contender together. The Karlsson signing is the most outlandish part of this to me, but even if that didn't happen, they could add an RD back through other means.

I by no means believe these things will happen. But if all that's needed is to give Karlsson 500k more, there's room for that.
Additionally, if Matta returns a 2nd, that'd be great, and Pitt would happily accept that.
As far as the Kessel trade goes, my thoughts are that Dvorak fills the void Jordan Staal left. He's a rangey center with strength who also has high level offensive talent. Couple that with a solid 1st round prospect and I don't think the trade is that awful.
