The Plan
Maybe it's just me, but I don't see how this makes the Habs a better team, or in a better organizational place as a whole. You are trading away 3 of the habs better deals (value wise). These deals significantly weaken the habs fwd group and places even more money into their d-core. If they wanted to rebuild, these might be the best moves, but in my opinion, a rebuild doesn't make sense after locking 30 y/o Carey Price up for 8 more years, and acquiring Shea Weber who is signed for 8 more years as a 32 y/o. If this team wanted to rebuild, they would need to shed Price, Weber, and Alzner to do so and those deals could be very very troublesome to move considering age(Weber, regression(Alzner), and injury history(Price). These moves might make sense to a full rebuilding team, but I don't think that's what the habs are.

LOL @ the pens giving up a 1st for Martin and Sosh. That team is trying to win a cup. Why would they give up a 1st for a trash cap dump and a player who hasn't played? You'd have to pay a team to take on Matt Martin, not the other way around.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pensfan89</b></div><div>Hunwick isn’t a cap dump. Actually far from it considering this up coming free agency, third pair guys like Cole were trying to get 4 million per year</div></div>
Not trying to be mean at all, but Matt Hunwick is awful. He is not a good player at all and has no value in a trade. Especially considering you are trading him to a rebuilder (presumably they made the decision to rebuild if they're trading Brassard). Why do the Sens want an older, 3rd pairing D-man for 2+ million for the next 2.5 seasons in the middle of a rebuild. This makes absolutely no sense to me.

Brassard is much more expensive than what you are giving up. A 20 goal man, a 13th forward, a cap dump, and a 2nd absolutely does not get you Derek Brassard. I do think there is potential in a Brassard to Pittsburgh deal, but you aren't even close in the value going back.

If that was all the Pens got for Tanger I'd be pretty disappointed. It makes our d-core worse but helps us score so idk what to think.

Deadline Moves
The only problem I see is the Habs would definitely have to retain 50% on Plekanec. The pens aren't able to swallow 6 million $ and the Habs are more than able to swallow 50% for the 1 year left on his deal. Other than that, the Pens probably say yes.

I get that I'm a biased pens fan, but Daniel sprong is going to be a really special player. I honestly wouldn't trade sprong unless it was a cornerstone d-man or 35 goal scorer (not named JVR). Maybe not the smartest decision but it is the hill I'm choosing to die on.

The pick swap (Buffalo high 2 for Pitt mid 1) is also very fair if the Penguins miss the playoffs and end up in the lottery because with them, there is still that risk, and I still leave them with a pick high enough to get a very good prospect in the draft.</div></div>
Gus is one of the top goalie prospects in the NHL. I honestly think the Sabres don't get enough value lol but the pens say yes in a heartbeat.

Deadline Deals
I don't hate the value of the Flyers trade but there is no way the Flyers and the Pens become trade partners. Just look at the last deadline, Mark Streit was traded to Tampa and then traded to Pit bc they didn't want to make a deal with their huge rivals.

Ian cole has as much value as Matt Benning IMO but, for the sake of argument, we'll call that swap a win for the Oilers.
Ian Cole=Matt Benning
Daniel Sprong > Ryan Strome
2nd round pick???
The value of Ian Cole is close to matt benning but you're telling me a free 2nd and the difference between Sprong and Strome is fair value to make up the difference? I get we will have to overpay but if I am GMJR, I block Chiarelli's number after that offer!

Never understood why people say this. Daniel Sprong is an unbelievable goal-scorer. Why can't he step into a Pens bottom 6 that can't score goals? You can't possibly believe he doesn't suit the penguins better than Ryan Reaves!

That is such a huge overpay for Strome. Sprong is probably worth more than Strome. Sprong has 15 goals in 25 games in the AHL as a 20-year-old. Strome has 15 points in 34 games in the NHL. Also, Matt Cullen probably has more value than Ruhwedel so why are the Wild giving up a 3rd when the pens only give a 4th.

helping Pittsburgh find a #3C
4 picks is a lot. I think 3 picks is the most GMJR would give for one player. Also, the penguins are lacking scoring in their bottom six. I don’t think they’d trade for a player who really doesn’t score or create offense. I gave 4 stars bc I think the value is there for dumping Hagelin and retaining 50%, but soderberg probably isn’t the answer pens management is looking for. Maybe this deal could open up a bigger one because of the money it frees up for the pens.

That is actually a great point. I never really thought of the implications of trading a player who chose you in free agency the season before. I’m not sure I agree with the point of a 1st and a b level prospect not getting Brassard. Brassard hasn’t had a great season and I think the sens would be open to trading him.

The salary cap is inflating to at least 80 million next season and lots of experts believe his deal will be above 12 million. I have no idea how think the isles get off paying him 10.5 when they have absolutely no leverage.

If you're giving a 1st to off set Hagelin's bad cap, then AZR isn't enough just for Brassard. Don't know what else needs to happen but imagine a little bit needs to be added there.</div></div>
It definitely could be more. I could see Gustavson going to Ottawa which I’d be okay with. I was more creating a lineup and the base trade but Dorion and GMJR could do some shenanigans that I am not smart enough to think of. As for Cullen I think JR is smart enough to walk away from any deal for a 40+ year old 4th liner for anything more than a 5th.

Trading with Philly
That's actually a pretty smart trade player and compensation wise but there is no chance the flyers trade with the Penguins. Remember last deadline when Flipper was traded to the Flyers and Mark Streit was included in the deal? Well the Penguins then traded for Streit from Tampa because presumably, the Flyers wanted too much value from the Pens. I really like the trade but the flyers are an unrealistic partner.

3 Straight Cups?
Dumo will definitely need more than 3.5 over 3. He will need at least 4 over 4. But on the other hand, I think Sheary will command less than 4.5 so I guess it kind of evens out. Also, I think Cullen definitely retires this year.

I think the pens need another top puck-moving blue liner and I think they need to make room for Sprong to come up. Sprong is going to be really special. I don't think we need Rusty for next year and we should maximize our assets.

That figure is fair for his second half play last year but he hasn't lived up to those numbers this year. Sprong will be on the team in some capacity.</i></div></div> I feel like that is the value for a good 3rd line center now. For example, Brandon Sutter was extended last year for a 4.375m dollar cap hit and Bonino is definitely better than Sutter so I was probably a bit generous even. Sprong I think will be on the team but I think it will be a call-up and he secures a spot like Rust. Also, I didn't know who to pencil him in for.
