I don't care how good Ryan was 3 years ago. He's fallen off a cliff.

You're comparing the RAPM chart of Ryan, who plays 9 sheltered mintues a night, to Sutter, who plays 14 minutes a night getting fed d-zone starts and still comes out ahead defensively by expected goals. He's a better player than Ryan. And if you wanna keep Ryan, keep him! Happy to have Vancouver retain.

Pretty sure this management group is gonna get fired by the time the expansion draft happens :)

Deadline sell-off
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TowelPower</b></div><div>That WPG deal makes no sense for the Canucks. Sure you want to get rid of Benn's contract but to tie Motte along with it? He's been one of the most consistent players in the lineup.
Pearson garners at least a 2nd round pick in return especially if the Canucks are retaining 50% of his contract.</div></div>
They are probably going to lose Motte in the expansion draft, and even if they don't, he's an unrestricted free agent at the end of next season and will cost $2+M to bring back. I doubt they do it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PhatRas</b></div><div>You included Ryan as a cap dump but then he is your 3C, I think the Flames would much rather hold onto a pending UFA that kills penalties and plays a really good 4C as opposed to getting a more expensive much worse Sutter. I don't get that move at all.</div></div>
I think Sutter is way better than Ryan at this point in his career - the Flames waived Ryan earlier and he's been a healthy scratch a bunch. I have him on the Canucks 3rd line as roster filler, if the Flames would rather do Sutter (50% retained) for the same pick I'd have no problem doing that deal.

As a Canucks fan, I'd do this. Virtanen doesn't really seem like a Lou Lamoriello type though.

Off-season retool

Well, I doubt Brisebois is gonna stash Kucherov on LTIR again. Look at what Schmidt got Vegas - and that is a top pairing defender. For a 2nd liner earning $4M+ on multi years, this the best he's gonna get. Either this or he packages like, a 1st with him.
Other alternative is move one of the *big* high end pieces but I doubt he goes that route.

See Barzal as the comparable for him on a 3-year deal. He may get like, $7.5M but it'll be that ballpark. And there's plenty of cap room for that.

Unrealistic offseason
I don't think the Tampa deal is realistic but I like the idea of it. I would offer Virtanen as the other piece instead - much cheaper buyout ($50K + $500K).

Liked part 1 a lot more. I don't think Seattle goes for that, and a 5 year deal to an injury risk like Larsson is a terrible idea.

Retool part 1
I like all your trades, I don't see why either team does the Pearson/Raanta trade though. A much simpler Pearson (w/retention) for a pick is probably more realistic.

building a contender part 2
Don't think you're getting Pettersson for less than Marner/Matthews money, and you're definitely not getting Quinn Hughes for less than Thomas Chabot money.
Other than that looks decent. I think Roussel isn't going anywhere, the team will probably have to buy him out.

Cap relief might mean having to trade good players
What a depressing off-season this would be, but can't say it's inaccurate.
I'd keep Stecher and only move Jake, letting Fantenberg walk. There's enough cap space for that.

2020 2021 approach from within and contention
Canucks fans hoping for Baertschi to walk away are dreaming. He'll probably never get another big-money NHL deal, his career earnings aren't super high, he for sure is grabbing that last $3M.

Not bad. Terrified to give Markstrom 6 years when he turns 31 in a few months.
I think the team is really weak down the middle. Sutter cant' be counted on to play a full season, so if he gets hurt you're in a lot of trouble.

You're also overpaying Gaudette IMO. I think he comes back for around $1.5M (see the Troy Terry contract for a comparable).

Moves I kinda like
That Boeser deal is probably right, value-wise. I wouldn't do it though.
That Eriksson deal is a pipe dream, IMO. 1 year of Marleau's $6M contract cost Toronto a first round pick to ditch. 2 years of Eriksson @ $6M in flat cap world is going to cost a whole lot more.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>redwingsfan04</b></div><div>I agree. Markstrom is the clear starter and the Canucks might have to trade Demko anyway before the Expansion draft. Also a good market for goalies this offseason so the Canucks could sign a cheap backup.</div></div>
A good market for goalies also means a guy like Demko won't have as much trade value. It cuts both ways.

Flat cap no compliance buyouts
Beagle's contract is frontloaded. He makes $2.2M per year on the last two years of the deal. Hickey makes $2.5M, so the Isles save $600K.
I see Demelo signing a deal similar to the one Nicklas Jensen got ($2.5M per year). Marco Scandella, who is a better defenseman than him, just signed for $3.25M per year.

When we return
That Eriksson trade is wishful thinking. Boston just gave up a first rounder so Anaheim would take Backes with 25% retained, and he only had 1 year at $6M left.
Tampa Bay is stocked with cheap bottom 6 players, they won't want Sutter even with 50% retained.
