Carlson is a top 5 dman in the nhl..... he also puts up 50 plus points a season. finished top 5 in Norris voting and previously took a team friendly deal where he made less than 4 million dollars/ 6 nhl seasons. so yeah the kid deserved to get paid. youre luck he decided to come back to dc bc if he didn't we would be facked ..... ek65 just signed for 11.50m id take jc74 over him anyday
also don't glorify conno...he had a very good season last year but what are the odds hes shooting % is that high next year.....I remember tj oshie had a similar year and has struggled to repeat.....weird enough it was after he got paid...
have faith in bura and I bet he has a 40-45 point season.. hes completely health and coming in with little competition for his spot ....he can actually focus on playing hockey and not the politics of the game

I didn't say that was an excuse, Carolina played better in 5 of the 7 games in the series. The better team in the series won the series. I was just saying that Kempny has a huge impact on the back-end, and there's no real reason to really change up the makeup of the team after losing in the first round to a good, up-and-coming team a year after winning the Cup. Yes, there should be an injection of youth, but I don't agree that you need to change up the team excessively.

Yeah. “You do realize” that Carlson had to play LD for the majority of the playoffs or play with seig who is a rookie? Kempny being out was huge bc he’s our best defensive dman. Carolina won in 7 games kempny wins is one of those 1 goal games.
Every player you named was hurt in the playoffs seems stupid to bring that up haha

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>my thought exactly.
Every year those players get older and slower. Next year,
Oshie is 33
Ov is 34
Backstrom is 32
this team needs to start worrying about adding some youth to it in the forward group that is actually capable of helping the team win. As it stands right now, there isn't a lot there. You got Vrana, Kuzy and wilson and that's it.
signing a 31 year old hags isn't the answer, and he wouldn't even sign of that anyway.</div></div>
It's also the same team that won the cup in 2018. The team wasn't the same after Kempny went down against Tampa in the regular season. Without him, the pairings were all out of wack. He might not be a big name, but his effect on the team defensive metrics is insane.
I do agree that the team needs more youth injected into the roster. I think that's why you keep Connolly, who's 26. I think I'd rather see Niskanen traded for a decent, young NHL forward, and see what you can get for Burakovsky in the trade market. I think Holtby could net a really nice return on that front too.

Trading holtby
Why trade Holtby for just a 1st? For Caps to trade Holtby like that it has to be really worth it. An unknown 1st that might not even make the NHL in 4-5 years isn't worth it to the Caps now who have a chance to repeat. If MIN wanted to make that deal then switch 1st with Kaprizov. Is that a high price? Yes but it's the only way to get the Caps interested.
That Djoos trade is gross. Djoos is going to be a great 2nd pair defensemen and you give him away for no reason. Djoos is 3 times the player Orpik and Emelin are combined.

So a #7D, a #13F, and a late 2nd and 3rd for an integral top pairing part that just helped us win a Cup? No way. If and when Caps move on from Niskanen they'll want the value of a 1st+2nd.

<a href="/users/ClockReads2113" target="_blank">@ClockReads2113</a> why wouldn't they start Vanecek in South Carolina? His numbers last year in Hershey were awful, and even if it's just him and Samsonov, he stands to languish. With Vrana gone, he's just as lost, linguistically, in either league, so at least put him where he gets consistent playing time and keeps learning.</div></div>
Because Vanecek is like really good. His stats last season are skewed because how bad HER was in front of him. Even Copley's stats were really bad. My bet is Vanecek ends up in top 5 goalie in the AHL next season.

Tom Wilson: Much Better Than You Think
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>I read the whole article and I also explained why I called it a bias fan article that leaves out all counter points to the contrary and then listed the arguments I've already received in regards to the Wilson signing.
As for evidence given to me, again I'll reiterate the only evidence I've ever had presented to me is the following.
He scored the 96th amount of 5v5 points if you include the playoffs. Which no one should do because the reffing in the playoffs is non existent. Refs put away their whistles and let guys do basically anything as long as you don't shoot the puck over the glass, or break your stick over a guys body with a slash. That helps Wilson big time because he can really man handle people and get away with it. Half of what he did in the playoffs will get him a penalty in the regular season, which is why he has more PIMs than anyone else.</div></div>
So you didn't read it. Because 96th amount of 5v5 points does NOT include the playoffs. That was just from all last regular season, including the time he was in bottom 6. If you include just the last 82 games of the season that does include the playoffs, he ranks 27th in 5v5 points. And LOL to your "refs put the whistles away so his points don't count" haha
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quote:</div>He produced as a top 6 forward when he played with top 6 player which makes him a top six winger. Leo Komarov out scored him when he was on the top line in TO and he's not worth the 3 million he's getting paid in New York.</div>
Again, Komarov never scored more than 22 5v5 points in a season, ever. That would have ranked him 197th among forwards last season. That's not top 6 production.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quote:</div>Since I compared him lets talk about comparables because he definitely has comparables. Matt Martin, Cal Clutterbuck, Leo Komarov etc, 4th line guys who can skate, kill penalties and hit everything that moves. Only according to Caps fans we can't use those guys because.......the only real understandable reason that I can figure out on this one is this, you can't use those guys as comparables because it hurts our feelings because it might be true and that means our beloved Wilson is just the vest 4th line banger in the league.</div>
Top 5v5 points among Komarov (22), Martin (17), and Clutterbuck (25). So closest is Clutterbuck but outside that 25, in 10 seasons, he never got more than 18. Wilson has hit 18, 20, 32 just in the last 3 seasons. So no, they aren't close to comparbles.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quote:</div>The funniest part of this whole arguement is when I have tried to lay out his past production as an example as to why this crazy contract is to bad. Hilariously, caps fans tell me we can't use that because he scored points for 1 half season and a very good playoff run. So that's that, he's worth 5 million because...... we are using a super small sample size and going with it because it feels good and we won the cup. That's really all this is, Wilson was a playoff hero and is being rewarded.</div>
99 games is not a small sample size. And as the article points out, it probably was too big of a gamble to go $5M, but it doesn't mean he can't live up to that contract.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quote:</div>Good luck watching this years Fernando Pisani be exactly what he is for the next 6 years, a 4th liner who had a huge playoff that one time.</div>
There could be a chance it was a fluke, but on the evidence based in the article, I doubt it. Going to be fun coming back to this convo if Wilson puts up an even better season than last.

As usual, absolutely no one takes those points into context:
1) 32 of those 35 points were at 5v5, that ranks 96th among all forwards, ahead of guys like Derek Stepan, Ryan Johansen, James van Riemsdyk, Logan Couture, Tyler Johnson, and many more considered top six.
2) He didn't get into top 6 until 11/20/17, from that point through the playoffs he scored 17G and 27A in 82 games, that's 44 5v5 points, which is 27th among all forwards, better than players like Phil Kessel, Vladimir Tarasneko, Jonathan Huberdeau, Jakub Voracek, John Tavares, Matt Duchene, Jason Zucker, and so many more.
3) If Wilson gets top 6 time and PP time next season he'll hit 50 points. Going to be funny when it happens and everyone eats their words.

You're not wrong. I think he's overpaid as a Caps fan. But his point totals are only a portion of the value he brings. He looked like he really belonged in the 1RW spot at the end of the season and in the playoffs with Kuznetsov and Ovechkin. His point totals are also without any PP time.
This contract is a huge bet on Wilson continuing to grow offensively. It could end up being a decent deal, or an awful one. Based on past production, it's awful right now. He's gotten better every season offensively. His ceiling is prime-Lucic offensive contribution. He'll last longer in the NHL as a power forward than Lucic IMO because he's faster.
