Babcock buried Holl and he’s now showing he’s a legit top 4 defenseman in his prime years. He’s big, physical, a RD and can skate. As Leaf fans we tend to over value our stars and undervalue steady, reliable less flashy players. Holl is an example of this. His next contract will be his best chance for a payday because of his age and he will get and deserve a hefty raise. Call me crazy, but I like Holl better at $2.5M than Reilly at $7-8M which is what he’ll command on his next contract.

I'm on the fence with the Goat. He can look slow as molasses and can have hands of stone, but he does remind me a bit of Boyle in that they're both huge and Boyle didn't even get a regular shift until he was like 25yrs old. My expecations for the Goat have always been tempered but he could be a diamond in the rough.

I hear ya on the 4th line lack of love. Somepne posted a signing of Rick Nash the other day. If he is healthy that could be a neat Mike Fisher kinda signing for the playoffs and give us a 4th line of Nash, Goat, Brown, and leave us with a press box of Lindholm, Ennis and Oz if we got Jensen. That's good depth for the playoffs and Babs trusts all of them.

I also hear ya on the potential need for toughness. I think this aspect gets poo pooed to often, and maybe from folks who've never played the game at a high level. I know from my pathertic career in competitive hockey that when there is a guy like a Tom Wilson running amok against your team, he can take your team off its game and it helps to have someone who can set him straight. I love kadri, but I don't think its fair to give him that assignment.</div></div>

Nylanders best comparisons for basic stats are forsberg and elhers and maybe Larkin. He will argue for more with advanced stats and projections. The problem isn’t just signing M&amp;M but Kapanen and then Dermott the year after. The Leafs have an elite offense but their defense isn’t good enough to challenge for the cup so I think they will end up trading him for a strong defender like Trouba

Matthews: 11 (matching with the JT contract, and being Eichel's contract with inflation. Remember, Matthews is an RFA, while JT is a UFA (RFA is significantly cheaper). The numbers actually show them as being very comparable.</div></div>

Kucherov signed his deal this year as an RFA not a UFA and it doesn’t kick in until next season so is a good comparable. Adding 5 goals to Matthews pace from last year is not a huge step and neither is Marner getting 80 points. Those are very reasonable assumptions. We disagree on the relative merit of M&amp;M and their comparables in the marketplace and in my opinion it is unlikely unless both players are willing to take a home team discount which is very dangerous to assume.

You call it enthusiasm, I call it very possible. Matthews projected to 45 goals last season if he wasn’t injured and has the second best 5v5 scoring rate since coming into the league. Given a healthy season and the fact he is now on the best PP unit in the league, he will certainly be in the conversation for the Rocket and 50+ goals. Given his play over the first 4 games, he is skating and shooting better and much stronger on the puck. I am not alone in seeing this. Who do you think will likely score more goals them him?
