Bertuzi
Call me bias leaf homer but this is a bit of an overpay for a middle 6 winger...
1. He is still unsigned
2. Amirov was a lottery pick and has a higher upside than Bertuzzi, the 2nd rounder is over the top imo too.
I'd say the package could look like Engvall, 2nd, 3rd, lower prospect

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BlastnyFromThePastny</b></div><div>Really? I mean I know it's been a tricky year for scouting but the guy often touted as going 1st overall isn't projected to be elite? Why is he touted as going 1st overall? Where are the elite defensemen in this draft?</div></div>
He's being highly touted because a lot of non-american prospects didn't play many games and if they did, it was overseas thus being hard to see them as well as it being hard to get good video of them.
I'm not sure I'm allowed to put links in a thread, but try <a href="https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/topdownhockey/viz/NHLEquivalencyandProspectProjections/ProspectProjections" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">draft projections</a>clicking this, there is a guy who has been working on models like this where he tries to project how prospects would develop throughout their NHL careers. He gives them a % chance of playing in the NHL and % chance of becoming a star.
Power has a 97% of being an NHLer (200+ games) but only a 17% chance at being a star. And from watching him play at Michigan a bit, I'd say its fairly accurate. His size and skating ability will make him have a long NHL career, but his skill and decision making is average at best. He'll be a very good player, but not one I would pick with the first overall pick.
And to answer the question about the elite defencemen, I'd say Clarke has a better chance at becoming a legitimate top pairing guy
Just check it out and play around with it a bit, I find it really interesting because he has been pretty spot on with his predictions in the past!

This all looked pretty good until I saw that Marner deal. Honestly just doesn't make sense for either side. The Sabres give up the first overall pick for no reason and the Leafs downgrade from Marner.
I'd probably look to get some retention on that Tarasenko deal then give Hall near 7 with some term since I think that's what he'll demand.
The 4th line is also very garbage, not to mention this lineup has MAYBE 2 penalty killers up front.
The trades are decent (except the Buffalo one), but the rest is pretty shocking

More Physical Bottom Six
I love the idea of bringing in aube-kubel, this roster seems kinda of incomplete though...you would probably have to spend that extra $3.98 million on another winger for the bottom six because Simmonds is not nearly good enough to play 3rd line. Also the Bunting signing is stupid, why give a guy like that so much money AND term?

that McDavid trade might have been the stupidest thing i've seen in a while (the oilers would never), but lowkey...this team is just as good, if not better lmao. I just think there are better ways about going at it.
There is also no taxi squad next year so those guys on it need to be dumped or sent to the minors.
There is an expansion draft too lol
I also think Coleman gets 5, but that is being picky.

Much much more flexibility. Doesn't have to necessarily look like this. I could see a world where we trade for Garland instead of Coleman, maybe we move Rielly and find a way to sign Hamilton, heck maybe we could go after Hall if he signs for near 7

honestly i would be worried about paying him too but the Leafs NEED another goalie badly because i highly doubt Campbell is as good as he was this season. Driedger is the youngest one there so it made the most sense.
And if we're being honest - its pretty much impossible to predict a goalies future success for years to come. That being said, it is also up to the Leafs team defence to make Driedger look good (similar to what they did with Campbell, just to a lesser extent)

Overpay a guy who DOESNT have a history with knee injuries, is better defensively and offensively than Hyman, turns it up in the playoffs, and is about a 55-60 point guy with limited PP time, ya i'll take it. Unfortunately that's how free agency works.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Terry_AkiSauce</b></div><div>I understand your thought process on Robertson but that's not how the NHL works, skill guys don't play on the 4th line, he won't get anything out of it vs playing line 1, pp1 on the Marlies.
Hyman and Garland aren't the same player and Hyman would still get his 20 minutes a night. You aren't trading for and signing a guy to 5.5M to play 14 minutes a night.
Don't see the need to move on from Holl when he's been solid alongside Muzzin and plays top 4 minutes at $2M.
CBJ would likely want prospects/picks, not just a similar replacement player and would likely prefer to not retain and if they do they'd get paid with at least a 2nd</div></div>
I think with the way Keefe deploys his lines, Garland would still get that 17-18 mins a night. He'll play both special teams and the odd shift in the top 6 as well.
I just don't like his fit over a guy like Killorn or Galch. It seems like the leafs like that "power-sniper-playmaker" combo and I don't see how he fits on the top 6. Might be able to take on that power role beside 91 and 88 is my thinking.
Personally, I also am not a fan of Holl. I think he is a product of playing with Muzzin. Seems to be poor infront of his own net and doesn't provide much puck movement in comparison to what Vatanen could do.

like a C+ level prospect, maybe a Mac Hollowell. Will probably play NHL games in a year or two but won't be a superstar.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Terry_AkiSauce</b></div><div>Robertson is either in the top 6 or back in the AHL, Leafs aren't trading for Garland to stick him on the 3rd line... I doubt Vatanen signs for that, would rather lose Kerfoot to Seattle if we're trading anyways and keep Holl at $2M (I don't think CBJ makes that trade anyways).</div></div>
- Robertson needs to start lower in the lineup against weaker comp and will benefit by playing with Spezza. Not a good idea to just throw him to the wolves.
- Why not? Hyman played on the 3rd line occasionally... Garland would tear up other teams 3rd lines and there is no reason they wouldn't move him into the top 6. He probably fits better on the 3rd line with this lineup but he isn't limited to playing there.
- Vatanen wasn't great this season, but can look good beside Muzzin. Even if it isn't Vatanen, someone of his calliber and would sign for around that much - maybe Larsson?
- CBJ jumps on that deal because there is not a chance Domi re-signs. They get a player that is more than a rental in Kerfoot, can play anywhere in their lineup, and provides positive value. Basically getting value for a guy who is going to walk, doubt anyone pays much for a potential rental in Domi.

Some fringe movement
I like the idea of the Killorn trade, but we might have to give up a bit more to the team retaining the money (in this case Detroit).
Also, maybe its a better idea to go after a more "available" guy like Yanni Gourde. I'd say he probably fits nicer and it allows us to replace Kerfoot at 3C, since Haula at 1.5 doesn't seem very realistic. Just a thought.

Money is always #1 for most players, and any player would be more than okay playing on a roster constructed by Steve Yzerman. The Red Wings will be competing in the next 2 years. And Colorado might not have the money to match it

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lancebmx</b></div><div>With this defence, and those goalies unless they turn their games right around, this team is a bottom feeder for quote a few years. Not to mention the lack in cap space to sign up and coming guys to their raises.</div></div>
If Andersen can be a .907 2.90 type of goalie (which is possible), then they will be fine on the goaltending. I'd also look at drafting Wallstedt if I were them at 6. But if they dont, they are probably going defenceman at 6 meaning they will have #6 pick, Seider, Viro, Johansson all coming up next year or in the next few years. They would also have the best defenceman on the planet with them who is only 21. Hronek and Reilly are also very capable top 4 defencemen.
That is not a bottom feeder team...
