Think so? Wouldn’t CGY be better off using those assets (and more) to target a true top 6 forward? Maybe even someone who plays center and wing? Hertl, Miller, etc?
I love Brown and he’d improve the CGY roster. Would be great with Mangiapane (seen that movie before), no doubt.

CGY will make it work to keep Gaudreau and Tkachuk. Both likely at $9.0M AAV with 5-7 years.
Mangiapane at $5.0M x 4-5 years, or $4.0M x 3 years.
Kylington at $3.25M x 3-4 years.
It’s very doable. Likely involves trading Monahan in a deal (likely off-season) that frees up $2.0M in cap space and then it works.

Agreed, I think a 1st + 2nd would be in range for a Rakell as a rental. His cap will go up a decent amount next year as well.

I don’t think CGY would do Hanifin + Zary for Chychrun, let alone adding Coronato, another 1st, and a 2nd. Crouse is nowhere near that value.
And that Hertl deal is way too high for CGY to pay as well. CGY would rather have Mangiapane plus the 1st rounder instead of Hertl.

+ Are you sure VAN would be interested in taking the risk on Coronato? CGY fans will be quick to tell you how painful it is to see how great Adam Fox is. Being semi-sarcastic on this comment. Coronato looks like he’ll be a great NHLer. Just gun shy with trying to entice college prospects to stay and play on the other side of the continent from their “home”.</div></div>

Ryan O’Reilly did not get that big of a return with 5 years left. Miller with 1, that’s an overpayment.
Expectations of returns have gotten ridiculous on here.
JT likely going to NYR for something along the lines of 1st/Lundqvist/3rd or 1st/Schneider.</div></div>
The point here is that the Flames could probably put a package together that doesn’t ruin the team. Feel free to take a couple pieces off that trade. Going to be tough to convince a division rival to trade an absolute stud to CGY.
Also, clearly you don’t value excellent cap hit contracts. Miller is a perfect fit for CGY, improves their entire 2nd line, and leaves enough room for Treliving to extend EVERYBODY and keep this team together for the next 2 years at least. CGY has to pay a premium to get Miller, and my view is it’s worth it. Adjust the pricing accordingly, this value ain’t a starting point in negotiations.

Would definitely still be keeping Tkachuk. And the money works just fine next year with Gaudreau and Tkachuk at $9.0M each, Mang at $5.0M, and Kylington at $3.25M. Tkachuk isn’t leaving.

Agreed. I can’t believe Treliving couldn’t find a way to get this done. A 3-way deal is a bit more complex, but it’s definitely not impossible to pull off to move Monahan somewhere else.
You had one job, Brad. He’s either too lazy to turn over every possible rock to get Eichel, or not competent to pull of the 3-way deal to get this done. Either way, it’s brutal for CGY fans. VGK has ponied up for Stone and Eichel while Brad just watches. A division rival has those two guys for the next 5+ years.
Would he have paid more if CGY was 4-5-0 to start the season? Yeah, probably. A 9-game sample size probably impacted his offer. And that is just bogus.

I don’t think he’d sign that low to play in BUF. The organization and ownership there is a bigger sh1tshow than Melnyk and the Kanata rink. Any players with a say in where they play are avoiding BUF like the plague.

I get that. But after the Dvorak deal, OTT probably thinks White is worth a late first rounder or more if he can put up 40+ points this season, which is possible. And OTT has cap space to play with. Plus, Tierney is a solid 3C depth veteran that this OTT team needs to have around if they are trying to move out of rebuild/tank status this season.
Feel free to disagree, but my view is that OTT internally believes that Brady and a top 15 1st rounder in a deep draft is going to be worth more than Eichel. And they might be wrong, or they might be right. Either way, I’m betting they wouldn’t make a Brady + 1st + ______ trade for Eichel.

The betting odds have to be a 3-year deal just like Matthew here. Ends with a juicy $9M+ qualifying offer and UFA status at the end, when the cap has had a chance to recover. And gives the player 3 years to prove he’s worth a massive extension, which he will earn.
The Tkachuks are rare breeds that every single team wants on their roster. And their agent knows what he’s doing to give them both maximum optionality in deciding their future.
Teams will line up around the block with bags of cash for Matthew and Brady if/when they become UFA. Signing $8M x 8 years leaves a ridiculous sum of money on the table for Brady, and also closes the door to him picking another team in 3 years (should he want to leave). Optionality = major value here.
$7M x 3 years seems like the only option.

Where I Think Montreal Goes
How, uh, does MTL manage the cap next year with raises for these guys?
- Suzuki
- Lehkonen
- Evans
- Romanov
- Chiarot
Only a few other cap hits come off the books, and it’s fair to expect cap only goes up around $1-2M next summer.
Suzuki alone is going to be looking at some big dollars…probably even another offer sheet LOOOOL 😬

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ConnorMcHellebucyk</b></div><div>i respect you a lot but Monahan has not been playing like a 1C since 18-19. his WAR is around 63 percent. hes a solid 2C. but nowhere near Eichel level. this boston trade is fair price but it does nothing for the flames so they certainly decline.</div></div>
The point Ledge is making here is that CGY shouldn’t trade Monahan unless they are targeting a second trade that improves them at C. Nowhere on this site in the history of ever has anyone tried to say Monahan is on par with Eichel.
CGY should definitely be exploring options to upgrade over Monahan, and CGY has the assets to be a top bidder for Eichel. Monahan would have to move to make that deal work. Unfortunately, I think Treliving is also thinking that keeping Monahan and hoping he can play a full season without injury will improve his value — and he’d also be a decent 2C.
Flames fans want to see more change for the roster, however. And rightly so.

Lines with Zadorov and Valimaki signings
It would be amazing if Pelletier came into camp and won that 3LW spot.
I would be surprised if the Hanifin/Tanev pairing got split up. And for that reason, I’m expecting Zadorov to play 2LD with Andersson, which leaves Valimaki + Mackey/Stone/Kylington for bottom pair duty. Not optimal for Valimaki’s development…
My hope is Valimaki and Andersson come to camp at another level and gives Sutter the clear option to roll:
Hanifin - Andersson
Valimaki - Tanev
Mackey/Kylington - Zadorov
I always prefer to see shut down Dmen (Tanev, Zadorov) paired with offensive guys who can skate well.
Fingers crossed for some improvements across the board from CGY’s younger guys this summer.
And of course, it would be a GD travesty if Treliving didn’t pay the fair price to bring Eichel in.

Get bigger guys and you shouldnt have signed Tatar
Wait so you think CGY would basically trade Dube and a 2nd for Johnsson and a 3rd, while also losing cap space?
Might want to revisit this one a bit. CGY is very high on Dube, and probably would have a hard time trading him for a late 1st rounder in 2022, let alone for that type of swap with a trade + offer sheet. Easy contract match here.

A couple late 1st rounders and a 2nd for Tkachuk? You’re not even close to half of his value here.
Doubt CGY would trade him for 4x 1sts (offer sheet comp) at this point.

CGY should and would happily make this trade. Eichel is a top 10 elite 1C and that’s exactly what CGY needs to improve their roster. Making this trade would give CGY the best Top 6 they have had in a long, long time.
The bigger gap in the Flames roster either way is on defense.
