Detroit Red Wings signed Jake Walman (3 Years / $3,400,000 AAV)
Boy you can really tell who has been watching wings games this year and who hasn't. Walman has had a terrific season and earned his payday. Left side of the blue line is looking a little full at the moment but Yzerman has made it clear that the young guys need to earn their way in the lineup.

Wings fans used to hate being in the West due to all the late games and the presence of power house teams in that confrence in the late 90s and early 2Ks. Boy howdy would we love to be in the West again right about now

That's pretty rich coming from somebody who thinks a team that isn't up against the cap is going to dump an expiring contract at the deadline.

Vrana called up should Bert get moved
I will offer this counterpoint though: we've got a MASSIVE log jam at LW with Bert, Vrana, Fabs, Kubs, and Bergy. Of those five, Bert seems like the one who is most likely to get moved due to age/cost to re sign.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Nathaniel</b></div><div>Decent signing in a vacuum, but I thought he was getting traded for sure. Paying Chiarot and Maatta a combined 7.7 mil is pretty bad though and is definitely deserving of some criticism</div></div>
I agree that the Chiarot signing looks pretty poopy at this point, but that combined figure is also just short of what Toronto is paying Holl and Brodie. So at some point, this is just the going rate for established blue liners in the show. Now is that money well spent? Therein lies the eternal debate

Fine middle to bottom pair defenseman who has played well in Newsey's system. Detroit still has cap room to burn over the next two seasons so its not like extending Maatta will prevent them from doing anything significant in that timeframe.

Bert is very hard to value because of the odd injuries he's had this year. I really wouldn't be shocked if he got a one year "prove it" extension at a small raise to stay here at this point because his value probably just isn't very high

(DET/WSH) - Mantha for Pánik, Vrána, 2021 1st, 2022 2nd
The plot continues to thicken on this one. Vrana has now been healthy scratched for the second game in a row in the AHL and has yet to record a point despite playing six games. Something has clearly gone sideways since he was tearing it up in the preseason, and the truth is the only people who know right now are Vrana and a few folks in the Wings organization.
On the other side of the coin, Mantha has also been a healthy scratch for the Caps last two games.
Given the choice, I'm pretty sure both teams would rather just have 5+ mil in cap space over what they're currently getting from their respective players.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>Anaheim is not at the beginning of its rebuild, we are a few years along, we have several high drafted individuals that are now young roster players, we should be bottoming out this year and start climbing up next year.
That said, we are in need of a top 6 LW, and we have the cap space, and Vrana is known by Verbeek (was the AGM under Yzerman when Vrana was traded to the Wings). There is a chance we could put the claim in and see if he works out.
I heard a rumor somewhere that Verbeek and Yzerman were in talks over the last couple of weeks, giving the full situation about Vrana so Verbeek goes in eyes open may have been what they were discussing.</div></div>
I could see that as an option. Anaheim certainly has the cap flexibility as even though there's a lot of RFAs that will need extensions, they have a lot of money coming off the books as well. Again, the elephant in the room here is where Vrana's head is really at. Something clearly happened between his last game for GR and the decision to extend his conditioning stint and because Stevie runs a tight ship, nobody outside the walls of his board room really knows the full scope.

Yeah buffalo is the one spot that could make a bit of sense, but the elephant in the room here is what was the issue that landed him in the PA program in the first place

This will probably age like milk, but...
Vrana's deal doesn't expire until after next season. Cap flexibility is a huge deal right now. The only teams that currently have the space to claim him without using LTIR are:
Ottawa
Minnesota
Chicago
Anaheim
Buffalo
Arizona
Ottawa has to extend DeBrincat and some other RFAs next year plus Stutzle's extension kicks in then, so they really can't afford his cap hit. Minnesota is stuck in cap hell until 2025 because of the Parise and Suter buyouts, so they're probably out. Chicago is clearly at the beginning of a rebuild, so picking up a guy like him with the idea of winning games makes no sense. Anaheim is in a similar boat, albeit with much more cap space. Buffalo could easily afford him even with extending their RFAs, but they're very deep at forward right now and probably want to let the kids continue to play. And Arizona is playing with an artificially low internal cap, so they aren't going to take on a deal like that.
Whatever happens, I think Yzerman will view this as a win. If he gets claimed, he just cleared a roster spot and 5.2 million off the books for the next 1.5 years without giving up a single asset. If he goes unclaimed, they still have a guy who could potentially be a major contributor as a top six forward if he can get himself back together.
Watch him end up in Toronto
