(DET/SJS) - Kostin for Simek, 2024 7th (NJD)
San Jose gets a useful NHL body and Detroit gets an expiring contract + dumps Kostin's 2 mil cap hit for next year to help clear the way for Mo/Ray's extensions and also gets a lottery ticket.
I'd say fair deal

Keep your assets or make a big splash, like a Buch or Chychrun or a Zegras (ew). That's how asset management works.
This would be the equivalent of Holland trading a 2nd and Janmark for Erik Cole, or Jankrok and 2nd for Legwand - teams that had no real shot to make any noise but traded valuable picks and prospects with potential.
I'd like to see Berg on a 3rd line with Soder and Veleno, eventually Kasper.</div></div>
You can't guarantee you'll be in this position next year or the year after. Will Kane be back and average a PPG next year? Will Larks play most the year without getting hurt? Will your 3rd string goalie step in and stabilize the ship after Husso pulls his sack muscle again? Who knows, nothing is guaranteed in this league.
I'm not saying sell the whole farm for a rental, but god help Lyon if we really trot out Petry on the 2nd pair against Florida or Boston come April.

This is why they need to do what they can to move Holl's deal. It won't be cheap, but you can't pay that guy 3.4 mil per year to watch from the press box.

Yeah that's basically it. The counterpoint to keeping Bergy is that there's going to be more space available next year with a few vet deals expiring. Time will tell who grabs those opportunities out of camp.

If he's not traded for an actual helpful piece, he'll be getting plenty of NHL time next year.</div></div>
No, I'm saying it'd be nice to see what that actually looks like if he doesn't get traded. 3rd line next to Copp and Fabs/Veleno would be interesting.
Dumba is never gonna win the Conn Smyth, but are you really gonna argue he wouldn't be an upgrade over the corpse of Petry? Wings forward core has more scoring as a complete unit than anyone in the league. The glaring weakness for this team all year has been the middle of the D core. You're in a position to add thanks to guys like Mo and Ray who are underpaid because their ELCs aren't up yet. I'd like to see them at least take a shot at making a run while that's still the case.

Dumb trade.</div></div>
I'm not saying Bergys a bum, but lets maybe pump the brakes a bit on what an undersize skill forward still playing in the AHL at 23 years old is and isn't. Could he be a 20G scorer/50-60 pt guy at some point? Possibly, but I'm not gonna bet my next paycheck on it. Would be nice to see him get ice at the NHL level on a Wings squad with an actual forward core and not the corpses of Holland's signings and waiver wire scraps.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CoachCoach</b></div><div>On the right side currently is Mo, Holl, Petry with Ghost/Chiarot playing some off hand.
Coming up through the pipeline are ASP, Gibson, Ant Johansson, and Tuo. If one of the last three hits, the RHD is set for the foreseeable future (barring an upgrade trade).
Why dump a first for a rental D that maybe helps them win a round but won’t be a main component in any deep run this season and will most likely be a FA.
When the cap rises, FA signing prices rise.</div></div>
So right side you listed can be summed up like this:
Franchise player, a bum who can't crack the lineup, old slow guy who's best hockey is behind him, offensive D who's had a good year but ain't exactly winning a Norris, and a guy who really should play on the left side.
I do keep forgetting ASP is a righty, but he's 2 years away at best. Tuo seems like he's doing well, but do we *really* think he's gonna contribute NHL minutes? I'm unconvinced.
Have the Wings overachieved this year? Sure. But sometimes you hit on a scratcher. Maybe Bergy is too high a price to pay, but it seems silly to not try and address an obvious need when you're in a position to make a run to the playoffs for the first time in almost a decade. Otherwise you just end up like Buffalo.

The bungling of the Blue's blueline post 2019 cup is almost incomprehensible. Petro should have had a statue outside Enterprise Center. Instead, he's going to have one in Vegas for raising the cup there. Its just sad. Blues could have really had something.

Not on the right side. And you've gotta pay Mo and Ray next year. Even with the money coming off the books and the cap going up, things are gonna get tighter when you're not paying those guys peanuts.

Could work, though they kinda already have a few guys like that (Kostin, Czarnik, etc.) Depth forwards really don't move the needle too much for the Wings because they have trouble fitting in all the ones they currently have. Hence why Bergy has been riding the bus for GR. 1st rounder for a rental D like Dumba is a bit steep. Don't get me wrong, I like the guy. But he's not without his faults (just ask Wild fans).

I'd hate to see him go too, but I get the impression Steve isn't 100% sold on him and it sure seems like Bergys not in a rush to sign an extension. We have other forward prospects that can step in over the next couple years and have a glaring need at 2nd pair RD. Seems like most comments on Detroit's moves fall into two categories:
Homer Wings fan drones who think Yzerman can do no wrong.
Or trolls who just want every move he makes to implode.
This is fine. About what should have been expected for what Ras is and isn't. I'll take 3.2 mil AAV for a guy who can play up and down the lineup over 3.4 mil for Justin Holl to watch games from the press box.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jdb9831</b></div><div>In a vacuum, this is a good deal just based on what Nylander brings to the table. He is worth the money and should continue to be through most of the contract. The last few years won't be as bad with the higher cap as well.
The problem is the structure of this team. I just don't think you can give 4 players 50% of the money and ice a complete roster. I have the feeling the Delta between JT+Marner now compared to JT+Marner with their upcoming extensions won't be much, if anything. JT will see his pay come down, I honestly don't know what a 'fair' number will look like, and Marner will go up. Probably something around 13-14 million/year. So even if JT takes 6-8 million on the next deal, the core four will still cost around 50% of the cap.</div></div>
This is really what it boils down to. Big Willie has absolutely earned his payday but between him, JT, Stachews, and Mitch the rest of the roster is gonna be looking at Toronto's available cap like Will Smith looking around at the house at the end of Fresh Prince.

Its a valid question, but Steve has made it pretty clear since about year 2 of his tenure that he wants everyone to earn their spot. And more depth on the blue line is never a bad thing.

So yes, SJS lost the trade, but the owners stood firm on not paying EK65 %25 to %33 of his salary for 4 years to play elsewhere.</div></div>
Which SJ ownership is well within their rights to do, but its not like the Sharks are going to be competitive anytime soon. So did they really need the cap space that they got 2 years down the road for retaining less?
As always, it may have just come down to dollars and cents. I agree that SJ probably "loses" this deal, but considering the bounds that Grier had to play in and how little leverage he actually had, I'd say he did alright.

I'd call this a fair deal for all parties involved.
While SJ definitely didn't win this trade, I think they made out okay considering how little they retained and how little leverage they probably had. Pitt and MTL move some bad deals out and some impact players in and don't really give up anything of long term value to do so.
I still question what SJ could have gotten had they been willing to eat more of EK's salary, but for all we know the return might not have been worthwhile to do so and instead they just took the future cap space.
