Defensive personnel decisions have been baffling
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MisstheWhalers</b></div><div>In 2017 when Copp and Armia were carrying him?</div></div>
The majority of Lowry's minutes were with Tanev and vice versa, and Copp was significantly worse away from Lowry in a way that Lowry really wasn't. Going into 2018 it wouldn't have surprised me if he had a down year because of the back injury he sustained carrying his line mates. Armia was good, but Armia pretty clearly wasn't driving that line.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MisstheWhalers</b></div><div>Lowry is so overrated in Jetsville, he's a good 4C but that's it!
Part of the reason they've been doing well is because he's been put further down the lineup, he simply just doesn't have the offensive instincts to play any higher up the lineup. I agree his wingers suck right now but he is what he is, a good 4C that plays a physical game and is an okay penalty killer, that's it.</div></div>
Last year Lowry was a good 4C. The year before that he was 5th on the Jets in scoring per ice time, led the NHL in High Danger Chance Differential %, and is pretty much responsible for getting Brandon Tanev a ridiculous 3.5x4 contract. In 2017 Lowry was absolutely putting up 2C numbers.

That won't happen cause 3 way trades never do, but that's actually a fairly realistic Risto trade. I think if Buff retire the Jets would agree to that.

Honestly I would rather Risto than Hamonic. Risto is the top dman on a garbage team, but a lot of his relative stats are fairly good, and at 5.5mill he's probably the better option than Hamonic at approximately the same price. The key here is that I wouldn't give up anything significant for Risto. I puke a little when I talk to someone who actually thinks we would ever trade Ehlers. Someone on here listed Risto for 2 2nd round picks. I wouldn't hate that trade if one of those picks was conditional on Risto not being garbage.

Problem with those two is that while we have cap space, we don't have that much cap space. We're currently operating close to cap. Next year, we get about 13mill in cap space from Buff and Kulikov. Immediately, we will lose approximately 5mill of that extending Ros, Niku, and Apples. I would hope we extend Laine, immediately. Now the good news with that extension is that is 4.25mill raise I would want to give him is coming from Perreault's contract. We would however immediately lose 3 paying Morrissey. We now have approximately 5mill left spend in FA.

I think the Jets would make that trade. Way more reasonable than any kind of Ehlers trade.

I really doubt the Jets have any serious interest in trading for a dman even if Buff leaves, given Chevy's MO. That dude does not trade core pieces no matter what and that's probably the price of a top RHD. The Jets get a ton of cap space back if Buff retires and I'd imagine they'll want to extend Patty as soon as possible, especially with Hamonic, Barrie, Tanev, Schultz all being UFA's this summer.

Who is the best forward without a contract
I'd hold off on giving up on Vesalainen till this year. Last year he joined his KHL team late and was basically given 4th line time because of it. I'm not disappointed he dipped back to Finland since it let us slide his ELC, but he looked very good in the couple games he did play for the moose last year. I want to see what he can do in a full season in the A before we think about spending to replace him.

Retool
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tsyls</b></div><div>I just think we can expect to see Niku get 30 points this year and roslovic will be our 3rd line Center next year. I just think they’ll both get 2x2.5. Also for Barrie, when spurgeon gets 7.541 or whatever. It’s easy to say Barrie is gonna get at least 8 mil. He’s gonna get 45-50 pts with Toronto. Trouba got 7x8 when he hit 50 pts once. On the open market, Barrie will get 8.
As for the veterans, I get what you’re saying but why would we let Stanley go to waste in the ahl next year. He takes Bitettos spot. And we have guys like spacek and chibisov that could go where Letestu is. No need to resign those guys.</div></div>
The reason Manitoba moved its AHL team from St. John’s to Winnipeg was to make the movement of callups instantaneous. In St. John’s if we call a player up it’s no guarantee he’s in. In this case I would love Stanley to be a call up (or Samberg) and I wouldn’t even bother with the press box for them. Just go from the AHL to the NHL. The whole reason they’re in the A in the first place is to get warm for the NHL. The reason I like veterans is .7 mill costs less than .9 mill and by having 3 in the press box we save approximately .5 mill and that isn’t even counting bonuses.
As for signing values, we’ll have to agree to disagree. For Roslovic I’m not willing to go much higher than what Copp got given both players experience and body of work. Copp had a better year last year and that was his 2nd extension. For Niku that’s a bit more a crapshoot but I’m basing my values of off Erik Gustafsson before his breakout year.

Retool
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div>Hardly a retool when you trade 1 bottom 6 player and that's it but that's neither here or there.
I think Barrie will get more. he'll get his fair share of points this year in TO and there's plenty of demand for a player like him. He may not be worth 8M but I think he can get it. Spurgeon is the best comparable and Barrie's production will be more attractive on the UFA market than Spurgeons defensive play.</div></div>
Personally I think that’s exactly what a retool should be. Making a retool post and going scorched earth is kind of defeating the purpose. The core of this team is capable of winning a cup, so just adding a defenseman in free agency, trimming some space for younger players is all that’s necessary. The last thing I want to see is Chevy make a Risto trade or any nonsense that costs us assets to make a run in a down year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tsyls</b></div><div>Niku gets at least 2.5 same with roslovic. Barrie won’t be settling with a 4 year deal and probably will ask 7x8.
We definitely aren’t resigning Letestu or Bitetto</div></div>
I'll resign any veteran that will take NHL minimum wage with no bonuses. The whole point is they are occupying the press box.
As for Niku and Roslovic, I doubt that. Niku will have one and a half full pro seasons under his belt and Roslovic will have two. Neither player has done much in the NHL (Maurice's fault) so they're making pitches based on potential and what they did in the AHL.
Barrie's the tricky one, but he is going to be the 2nd highest paid defenseman to hit the market so I kind of doubt he makes 8mill. Or maybe the Blues decide to just throw their entire cap to Pietrangelo.

Realistic
I'd rather keep Perreault around with a forward core that young. He's a possession monster, excellent forechecker, and defensively responsible which is basically the three main ingredients for a great player to put with young up and coming players. In this scenario I'm alright with giving Gus a little more seasoning in the A.
Also let's go get Tyson Barrie. Hamonic is decent but the stuff he's good at is the kind of thing which gets overvalued in the defense market, whereas Barrie is small and gets generally undervalued at every turn because of it.
I would rather put 7M into Barrie than 5.5 into Hamonic.

Nah. That does not make the Jets contenders, and if that doesn't make the jets contenders, then I would rather stockpile picks, and wait for next year. Take all that sweet, sweet cap space from Kulikov, and pay Morrissey and the kids with it, and then go out and get a nice big UFA whose name preferably rhymes with 'Ice 'n' Cherry'.

..... Is this supposed to be a hot take?
You're probably right. That's not really a problem though. Half the teams in the league don't make the playoffs, and this team got hit by the Buff bomb to open the season. This isn't exactly a sky is falling scenario. They now have 8mill in cap space that they didn't have before, get a high draft pick, sign a big UFA and pay anyone that needs to be paid big money, and rebound next year. These aren't the oilers, the sens, or the panthers

lol what exactly would you measure by? Corsi? Sure, but having positive corsi at 10 minutes of even strength is even less impressive, since the stat devalues with less ice time, but it gets even better since Gunnarson and Bortuzzo had -3 and -6 relcorsi respectively.

No Stars - Do They Make The Playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Lots of teams have strong top 6's and top 4's. The teams that also have quality third lines, checking lines and depth in defense win plenty. The Blues certainly had an excellent top 2 lines and top d-men, but the back half of their roster contributed a helluva lot, too. Certain recent star-studded teams haven't won the Cup because their squad balance is so poor: San Jose, Toronto, Winnipeg, Nashville, etc.</div></div>
Again gonna have to disagree with that one. The Blues don't have a bad roster top to bottom, but the Blues top 6, top 4, and goaltending was absolutely the reason they won the cup. Tyler Bozak and Sundqvist were the only two bottom 6 forwards to crack the top 10 even strength points in their roster, and finished 5th and 9th in scoring respectively. That's pretty par for the course from what you would expect a front loaded team to look like. Especially when you consider Bozak averages 10 minutes of even strength per game. That reads more like a statistical anomaly than the Blues bringing a completely rounded roster.

You're going to have to give me a recent example of a team that's had success in the cap era without at least an above average top 6. I can't think of any off the top of my head but I can think of countless examples in which the opposite is true, and strong top 6s and top 4s seem the clearest correlation to winning.

No. Spreading talent throughout your roster is not how you win hockey games. Uneven usage is a thing. If you play Colorado, Toronto, or Winnipeg, you should expect to see those top two lines about 35-38 minutes of ice time. That means that your team is being dominated for more than 50% of the game on paper.
Ideally a fourth line should be cheap, and passable. Guys on ELCs or good veterans on discounts ideally. Right now, as a Jets fan, I am super happy with Mason Appleton and Jack Roslovic on my 4th line.

Optimal Lineup

Gonna have to disagree with that one. The reality of the Jets is that they don't have a bonafide 2C. This lineup essentially is a top line, two very good middle 6 lines, and a 4th line. 2nd and 3rd line is interchangeable, as is Copp and Lowry as Center and Left Wing. I just put Lowry/Copp/Wheeler because the "2nd line would be matching the other team's top line." Per 60 minutes of even strength I'd love to see this lineup have an 18/15/15/12 split.
What exactly did you have in mind?

Very bad team. Way too spread out in terms of talent. As someone said it's a lot of good players with no great players, but that is not a good thing when you only ice 5 at a time.
