Winnipeg Jets signed Andrew Copp (1 Year / $3,640,000 AAV)
Outstanding deal for a player just reaching their prime like Copp who can consistently produce on a 40-50 point pace in an 82 game season. Love the AAV for the jets but this may be Copps last year as a jet.

I like it, helps the Jets a lot this year! People who don't know the organization will probably say he wants out (as they already have) but I think the door is wide open for a longer term deal to be worked out during the season. If the Jets want to keep him, I have no doubt they will. If I am wrong and he just wants to walk, I'm glad we were able to keep him for one more season to help with a dep playoff push.

He doesn't want out...he just wants paid. If they Jets could afford him at 4.5, he would have got that

It's high but I think it's to cover for Dubois' extension...Chevy will want to see his long term outlook for any UFA

Low risk with the 1 year deal, and it's nice to see Stastny still get the bag. I honestly like this deal a lot.

What an awesome signing for the Jets! Beyond happy to have Stastny back in the fold for at least another year.

That would be a lateral move at best for the Jets and Schmidt isn't waiving for Winnipeg.

I agree that Kovacevic & Gawanke would be the most promising RHD's but I feel like we would have to give up one of our D prospects in order to get Soucy...and Heinola/Samberg aren't going anywhere lol.

Give Hamilton his 8M
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TooMalevolent</b></div><div>I am as critical of the Jets GM (and coach) as much as others from the outside looking in because he seems to never really make moves or improve his team (every year they are wasting mvp performances from their goalie), but there always does need to be that qualifier that they will never be a big free agency destination. Now that can often be a blessing, seeing as how many overpay for UFAs, but even maybe trading for a player with a few years left changes the equation when you think the player will not resign.</div></div>
Exactly man! It can be a blessing and a curse when it comes to UFA's, I also agree that the trade market for players with a couple years left on their deals is something we should explore more than we do.

Dallas Stars signed Miro Heiskanen (8 Years / $8,450,000 AAV)
I really like Miro, and I can see his potential.
BUT
He doesn't yet have the full body of results that would garner a contract like this, and as they didn't get a discount for going long (as I don't think he'd get much more than this in 3 years time) I would have bridged him.
I have yet to decide whether that makes this a bad contract or not.
Edit: I think I'm leaning towards a no vote. The opportunity cost of not bridging him is too high for a team looking to win and the risk he never puts it all together and hits that upper echelon make this too risky for my taste
Edited again (2023):
Yeah I stand by this take. Assuming he got 3@6.5, followed by X@10.5 (Dahlin's rumoured deal) the overall cost for this contract would be 9 mil aav on the nose, but they'd get those first 3 years with more room to compete. Contract is perfectly fine, just wasted opportunity cost.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Slugson_Slugger</b></div><div>I like the idea of getting a guy like Rutta. I do think the Jets should do more for the back end and maybe get a better guy than Stone. Samberg could be given a shot as well.</div></div>
Agree, love them to do more, also. Love it if Cheveldayoff surprised us with a significant move. Re: Samberg . . . While i'm certainly not opposed to giving youth an opportunity, the idea of playing 2 rookie defenseman (Samberg, Heinola) along with a sophomore (Stanley) makes me a tad fearful that our defensive metrics will only get worse, and they need to get MUCH better.

I cant see Winnipeg doing this for anything.
He is the heart and soul of that team once he was out of the playoffs the team was not the same.
0 chance they move him
and if they did there would be a 1st rounder if not multiple in the deal.

Next Season
This is an interesting offseason.
I think the Copp contract should be around there $3.9-4.2M.
Pionk, I doubt he’ll be that high, $5.5-$6.5 depending on term.
Stanley might have earned a few extra $$$ with his playoffs, but that’s $1.2M or so.
The FA... I really like the Nordstrom signing. I think that’s the $$$ he’ll get, and he checks the solid dressing room, 4th line, PK role perfectly. I expect Calgary to resign him, but who knows.
I’m not a fan of Chiasson, I would like to see a better 3rd line winger to replace Appleton.
I do really love Larsson. I think he’s be a great addition to the right side of the Jets D and fill a huge need. I think he’ll resign with EDM for $4-4.5M, so your contract to lure him to Winnipeg is reasonable.
The one tricky thing for Chevy to navigate is Little and the LTIR. When Little is placed on it, the Jets will only get the cap relief over the cap, so based on your roster above, the Jets wouldn’t have any excess cap space (Beaulieu and a 23rd player would be added as ‘scratched’ and the Jets would be hard capped).
Nice roster, thanks!

I woudl be so happy if hamonic signed that, though I don’t see it happening. Probably looking at at least another 1M. Overall I like it and think chevy has quietly done a good job this offseason. We still lack a big top 4 rd but other than that, it looks good.
Also switch Roslovic and appleton imo.

Personally, I would like gus to play in the ahl one year. I think there is offensive potential there so hopefully he can unlock it while playing with Vesalainen, then both of them can come up together after the expansion draft
