Opening night lineup
devils probably aren't looking to hold the bag for Bennings mistakes. if you want relief hes probably going to have to make a hockey trade and give up one of the good players that he screwed himself out of being able to pay.

would you be willing to give up a package like Boldy and #22 for garland?

Im not opposed to trading Mercer either. You can only make deals when the other party in the trade likes what you have to offer. That said, I am opposed to giving up mercer for Conor Garland. A first and a top prospect are the kind of assets that should only be basis of a blockbuster trade for a team like the devils. if you are at the deadline, and trying to win a cup, that is a different story, but its still a ton to give up. The devils should be willing to make this kind of deal if it means getting somebody that could rapidly accelerate the rebuild.
In order to get a legitimate star player, youre probably gonna have to give up a 1st and a top prospect at the very least, but thats gonna be most of the value in the deal. Considering recent history the devils could get a bonafide stud winger like maybe forsberg or boeser by adding either an additional top prospect like foote or boqvist to that deal or an additional pick in the first two rounds. Would you be willing to give the overwhelming majority of that package for Garland instead? He's a really good player, but I think you have to try to swing for the fences a bit more if youre going to include both of those assets in a deal.

Garland
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bdawwwgy1</b></div><div>before people say this is an overpay for Garland - it absolutely isnt. fair deal</div></div>
for 4 years at 5.5 million, it is close, but still kind of a hard sell for me. A first and and a team's top or #2 prospect is not far off from blockbuster value if we look at recent history. There's no guarantee that will be the real figure though. I believe Garland is also player arb eligible, so its entirely possible that this could be a trade for 2 years of conor garland at more than 5.5 million. At that point I think that is massive overpayment. It's buyer beware, and I just dont think the garland is tantalizing enough to take that risk.
Equally, Mercer looks very promising...like probably shouldn't have fallen to the 18th pick. Either way, lets say mercer is worth the 18th pick in a good draft on average. it looks like you are a bluejackets fan, so to put it into perspective, if there devils were to turn around and flip Garland to CBJ, are you willing to trade two first rounders for him, or a late first and your #2 prospect? I am not opposed to trading either of those assets, but I am certainly opposed to trading those assets for a contract-less Garland.

NJ certainly accepts, but if it were an ideal world, I would rather you just let the devils finally overpay TBL for sergachev. you guys are still way above the cap regardless of whether foote makes 1 mil or 5 mil. you can save 5 mil with sergachev right now, and not have to worry about two years from now when he will be worth 7-8 millioneither.
youre practically paying us for foote in this situation, while in a sergachev trade, the devils would probably give you guys at least 1 first rounder and 2-3 B+ or A- prospects such as Foote or Boqvist.

unfortunately they cant. they retained 50% on both palms and zajac to the islanders. you can only retain on two players per year. you would probably have to keep gusev in the minors until playoff time. honestly i think this is overpayment on the penguins part regardless of whether the devils could retain salary or not.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Saskleaf</b></div><div>Still, he's clearly not as good as Coleman. Not worth quite as much.</div></div>
they are different players but I think coleman is better. still hes worth more than blake coleman to almost any team in this league. Perhaps VGK and Tampa being the only exception, where his need for a new contract would cause problems retaining more important players. The fact that he is an RFA basically means you get him for another contract, and he will have limited bargaining power. 2 years at the very least, likely 4+. Coleman will be a 30 year old UFA signing when the season starts in 2021-2022 and TBL knows they cant afford to re-sign him. miles wood is 25.

I am not a too high on Foote compared to the experts and insiders, but way better is a stretch. TSN rankings have Foote higher than Amirov, and he would be significantly higher in last year's list. I like amirov and I see a lot of potential there. On upside alone, its kinda of close, maybe a slight edge to Amirov in my book. In terms of NHL readiness and likelihood of being a full time NHLer in the near future Foote runs away with it.

Deadline Transactions - San Jose
I dont love the deal, but I guess its a legitimate offer. Only issue is that you would have to keep donato protect him with one of your slots, and trade him to us as future considerations after the expansion draft. Otherwise, theres no way the devils bring in another forward this year. The only exception being if you had a UFA with 2022 expiry, at $1mm or less. they would essentially be cannon fodder, but it would allow the devils to fulfill their exposure requirements. you guys dont have anybody that fits that bill though, so moot point.

I think the devils would be willing to retain the full 50%. in any event it doesnt really matter. If he is traded on deadline day his cap hit will be prorated to 25% of his AAV, so he would either cost you guys $562k 50% retained or $1.125mm at 0% retained. With that considered, I think there will be quite a few suitors. One of them is bound to give up a 1st rounder for him.
