I am not a too high on Foote compared to the experts and insiders, but way better is a stretch. TSN rankings have Foote higher than Amirov, and he would be significantly higher in last year's list. I like amirov and I see a lot of potential there. On upside alone, its kinda of close, maybe a slight edge to Amirov in my book. In terms of NHL readiness and likelihood of being a full time NHLer in the near future Foote runs away with it.

Deadline Transactions - San Jose
I dont love the deal, but I guess its a legitimate offer. Only issue is that you would have to keep donato protect him with one of your slots, and trade him to us as future considerations after the expansion draft. Otherwise, theres no way the devils bring in another forward this year. The only exception being if you had a UFA with 2022 expiry, at $1mm or less. they would essentially be cannon fodder, but it would allow the devils to fulfill their exposure requirements. you guys dont have anybody that fits that bill though, so moot point.

Making moves
I think the devils would be willing to retain the full 50%. in any event it doesnt really matter. If he is traded on deadline day his cap hit will be prorated to 25% of his AAV, so he would either cost you guys $562k 50% retained or $1.125mm at 0% retained. With that considered, I think there will be quite a few suitors. One of them is bound to give up a 1st rounder for him.

It looks like you didnt give wood a contract, was that on purpose? Even if he reverts to his bad play of previous years I would be surprised if the team let him walk away for nothing as an RFA. Also I think Klingberg probably warrants more than $4.5mm on the open market, but doesnt seem like a big issue considering how much cap space you have left to play with.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Devil1122</b></div><div>If the Devils decide to spend money in free agency, they could start contending soon. I would love if this happen but I doubt it will. I also like how the Devils still have 10 mil in cap space after these signings</div></div>
for this season I am showing and the next, yes. By 24-25 that money would likely dry up quickly if the cap were still relatively flat in 5 years. if it goes up by by about 10 mil over that period of time they would be pretty golden. Not impossible with the new tv deal and the hopes that the league begins to rebound following a season full of fans in the seats, but I wouldnt count on it.
If they ony have $10m in space by 24-25 they would be in trouble when the devils hopefully have a reason to pay smith and holtz about 5 or 6 mil a piece or more on bridge or long term deals. Blackwood would also need significantly larger contract, along severson and with most of the bottom 6. I suspect zacha and bratt will max out around 5 million on their next deals if they perform, so thats only an extra 2 million total against the cap compared to the deals I have them on now; however, they would already be in the red at that point. I have a sneaky suspicion that Wood will get overpaid, so I gave him 5.1 million. If he continues at his current pace, that is fine I suppose, but if reverts to his form of the last two years at any point, that will really bite the devils in the butt

If theyre not drafting one of the top 3 guys in 2022, whoever they pick isnt going to be playing for another 1-2 years, and likely not a legitimate contributor for another 1-3 years after that. If the devils arent contenders by 2024 or 2025, that means they have bigger issues. Depending on how you look at it, thats at least a full decade rebuild from when shero cleaned house in 20215, or essentially a 13 year rebuild from when the team kind of fell apart after the 2011-2012 season. If they do draft one of those top guys, the pick would be protected. if he is willing to extend, I do the deal in a heartbeat. if he plans on going to UFA regardless, then yes, it wouldnt be very smart for the devils to do this for a one year rental.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bdawwwgy1</b></div><div>i wouldnt do that if im jersey</div></div>
I forgot to put it in the description but this would be with forsberg extended past 2022.
right now they have about 10 solid forward prospects that they need to turn into 2-3 good roster players. Whether its these guys or 3 other dudes say, mercer/kuokkanen/maltsev, they would still have a shortage of roster spots in the coming years. theyre all between the ages of 19 and 23, so its not like you can just keep 4+ good players in the AHL until theyre old men.
perhaps they can get it done without the picks or less picks, but If you trade a 2022 or 2023 1st rounder, that pick is in the NHL in like 2023 or 2024 at the absolute earliest. In all likelihood they arent major contributors on a contender quality team for a few years after that. So, I think the devils likely have bigger problems if its 2025, they have a roster full of high end talent, and they cant get past losing a draft pick or two.
also, if the pick slides to 2023, that means they picked Shane Wright, Savoie, or Lambert. You would legitmately just have a 3rd or 4th line wing spot up for grabs for the next 5-10 years.

Doing a bunch of un needed thing with analytic
I think it would probably behoove the devils to keep wedgwood all year, even though it would probably be the smart move, asset management wise, to rent him to a contender. Otherwise, Blackwood would basically be getting abused in 4 meaningless games per week. Wedgewood has exhibited good confidence, and that has been reciprocated back by lindy and the team. I would probably lean towards saying 'why mess with a good thing?' and keep him. Especially so, if the return is going to be fairly unremarkable.
Dell isnt bad by any means, and I think Fitz would probably give him to you guys for pretty cheap. Hes a legitimate backup, but Wedgewood has clearly has won over some hearts in the organization.

Fitz seems to be pretty grounded in the reality that you need more than one legitimate goalie in the modern nhl. I dont think they will shy away from bringing in talent at backup goalie going forward. Honeslty I wouldn't even be too mad about signing wedgewood to a 2 year deal under 2 million per season. If not, you can go into the open market and see what the price is for a guy like raanta or something. I am not a shero hater by any means, but one of the big gripes I had with him was how he handled the goaltending situations the last two years. Even if he wanted to keep Cory in the system, you need an insurance policy/contingency plan. You just cant rely on somebody like that, and it was unfair to let a young blackwood face so much rubber on an almost nightly basis. In my eyes you dont need to go out an pay a guy like Khudobin 5+ million dollars to be "the best backup" or whatever, but you need a legitimate backup for sure. I wouldnt expect that to cost more than 3.5 million per year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Devil1122</b></div><div>These are the main needs for the Devils in my opinion
1. Big Scoring LW next to Hughes (Ovi type player)
2. 2-way/defensive LHD behind Smith
3. 3rd line Energy penalty killer (Hyman/Coleman type player)</div></div>
I think the devils could certainly benefit from having another sniper in the top 6 such as filip forsberg. That said, I would probably put that as #2 on my list of needs. I think they would benefit much more from the acquisition of a legit 200 ft defensemen. Obviously they dont grow on trees, but they dont necessarily have to go out there and try to trade for victor hedman either. I always think of Jake Muzzin when I think of a guy that isnt a star, but he is big enough and talented enough to contribute in any situation. Of course, Muzzin is a little too long in the tooth to align with the devils current contention trajectory. Hes just the style of player that comes to mind when I think of needs. I was really hoping they would find a way to pry sergachev from TBL last summer, but that was very wishful thinking.
lastly, I think they have more than enough guys that can become great penalty killers. They already have Nico and Zacha. It seems like Maltsev, Mcleod, Sharangovich, Bastian, and Kuokkanenen all seem to show promise there. Equally, those are the kind of guys that previously established teams go out looking for. The Coleman situation is kind of a perfect example. He was a guy built for the playoffs, but he had to go to a team like TBL to show how valuable he really can be.

thanks brother, you too. although the isles probably dont need as much luck!
I would hope that they are less worried about the expansion draft and more worried about adhering to their rebuild plan. seems they have a weird situation and I worry that their rebuild may culminate in building a mediocre squad rather than a contending squad. they dont really have that great of a team as far as 20-21 looks, but there seems to be a log-jam amognst the 'good but not great' prospects in the system. at some point you have to stop stockpiling those kinds of assets and package them as a part of a bonafide roster upgrade. Of the guys i listed in the scratches/taxi section there are about 9 of them that should clearly be full-time nhlers at some point. always good to keep the cupboards stocked, but its mathmatically impossible that the devils will be able to maximize the value of them over the next 2 or 3 years if they intend to keep them all in our system forever.

I'm not entirely opposed to that if he continues to have faceoff struggles, but I think that would be a bad move to look at him as a wing in the long term. hes truly gifted when it comes to neutral zone play, and carrying pucks into the offensive zone. you want that to be happening from the middle of the ice, or you sort of squander the advantage since it typically means cutting the ice in half rather than 3rds when defenses have to assess and triage scoring threats. for example, thats was a big factor whenever hall (and therefore the entire top line) got into bad dryspells.
in part, that is also why miles wood is practically useless, unless the rare situation arises where he actually converts on a breakaway or manages to make a decent pass back to the middle of the ice. conversely i dont think it is a coincidence that mcdavid and barzal are almost irreplaceable when it comes to their ability to generate offense off of clean entries.

agreed. there were times last year when would get frustrated seeing him get sent back down to bingo just so Rooney and Hayden could play. If it were simply a matter of ability, then I must be quite far off the mark in accessing talent. Hes clearly not going to be a superstar, but there were a lot of instances last year where he could have played a decent role, and not neccessarily need to be sequestered to 4th line minutes. He seems like the kind of guy that you can throw out there for an extra 2 min worth of TOI if he is hot. If not, keep him limited to the standard 12-13 min. The fringe guys that they put out there last season certainly didnt show any semblance of that flexibility.

appreciate the thought put into the devils trade. I honestly think it seems like a decent hockey deal. To be honest, I think McLeod probably has a bit more value than Svechnikov at this point as he is in fact a right handed C, about 1.5 years younger, and looks like he has a higher floor at this juncture. That said, I dont think it would take much more for this to be completely fair value...its not like we are talking about swapping a young heatley for hossa here.
McLeod looks like he will at least be a bottom 6 C for the next 4-8 years if I had to quantify it. I would say with a high degree of confidence that he will be a full time nhler in the near future. you would know better than I do of course, but would it be fair to say that svech would then have a greater risk of never being a full-time NHLer, or being out of a full-time spot within 4 years?
