Treliving Overhaul - Detailed Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>exo2769</b></div><div>The other thing that a crazy guy like me thinks about, but might not be a big factor in all this is...why are the Hawks helping TOR with their issues??? Don't we have their 1st round pick next year. How about they keep 54% of the cap in 4 players next year. Doesn't that benefit us?</div></div>
Isn't Jones for Marner really more of a "hockey trade" though? Yeah, Leafs gain $1.4m in cap space, but that's not really a significant amount. If they hadn't re-signed AM34 or Willy, that's probably a valid point. But with those 2 back for sure, can't see how they aren't one of the 8 best in the east. I could see the Isles, Washington and Tampa Bay all missing next season. Not the Leafs. Even with the 54% factor.

Treliving Overhaul - Detailed Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ryminister_92</b></div><div>I think you’re looking at things a bit narrow sighted. While yea I agree on the surface that losing Jones is a big loss, it’s not not overcomable. They don’t need a top pair guy to take his minutes, in UFA there are guys they can look at as a solid top 4 guy and then share the minutes with Murphy. A guy like Dylan Demelo would be a good option for that.
I’ve always thought that Chicago should target a top right handed defender in this year’s draft since they’re strong at forward and now with Chicago drafting in the top 3 for sure (the lottery is on commercial before the top picks are revealed as I write this) - but outside of them picking #1 I think they should take Artyom Levshunov regardless if they’re #2 or #3 which would then solve the future issue of a top pairing right handed defender that Jones’ spot left void</div></div>
I don't want to trade Jones away. I'm 100% still in the market for Demelo though because we have nothing but rookies/2nd year guys on the left...which is even more reason to not do the trade above. We need MORE veteran RD and not less. Even with Jones as a Hawk I'm still going to try to be the highest bidder for Demelo and I think we have the cash/cap to do it.
That's player development to me. Pairing Vlasic with Jones. Pairing KK with Murphy. Pairing EDM/Keiser with Demelo.
We can get a Kaner or Toffoli or a you name it without having to create another hole or lose assets. You keep Marner. He's a really good player. You should keep him!

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ryminister_92</b></div><div>I feel like an extension could be in place for a deal, however if Marner is extended it would obviously come at a higher price. I’d up the 2nd to a 1st and the prospect would be a higher quality one. The tough thing would be getting all that in place by the draft where Marner can’t officially agree to a new deal but can talk new extension</div></div>
Yep. The cost to the Hawks definitely goes up. Totally agree. I'd been kicking around returning the 2 picks from the McCabe trade ('25 1st, '26 2nd) and Jones. '24 picks would be off the table since the extension can't be signed until 7/1.

Despite your detailed and thoughtful analysis, and proposing a trade package that is actually pretty fair, I have to agree w/ <a href="/users/exo2769" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@exo2769</a>. Trading Jones for just one guaranteed year of Marner isn't a risk the Hawks take. Jones leaving does create a giant hole on the Hawks blue line with no good way to fill it. There really isn't a true top pair RD in this UFA class, and the Hawks likely have to overpay a guy like DeMelo or Pesce to sign in Chicago to backfill that hole. Not ideal. The Hawks spending any of the assets it would take to get Marner as a one year rental would be a foolhardy exercise. Yes, maybe he clicks w/ Bedard, loves Chicago and re-signs. But what if he doesn't like it in Chicago or he can't agree w/ he Hawks on a new deal? Those two scenarios are equally likely IMO. If Marner leaves after one year, where does that leave the Hawks?
Now I'm in the very small minority of Hawks fans who WOULD make a deal that includes Jones if Marner came with a reasonable extension in place. But for me, no extension, no deal for Marner.

You're a knowledgeable fan and I take your posts comments serious. My comment is no reflection on you or your effort.
I really don't think you're looking at this from the CHI perspective. IF CHI makes this trade they solve 1 problem, but create an even bigger problem. They don't have a Seth Jones Replacement. There isn't any #1RD available as a UFA and our single weakest position within our farm system is BY FAR the right side defender. Rinzel looks like he can be a nice #2RD and maybe Crevier can be a longer term #3RD, but thats what we got. It's so much easier to bring Kaner back. We can actually fills holes then and keep our assets. Plus did you say $12.25??? I'll stick with Jones and his $9.5.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Garak</b></div><div>CHI should not be interested in trading assets for Marner at all, let alone trading some pretty valuable assets to TOR without an extension already in place. I doubt CHI is interested in moving Jones either. This just isn't happening. Or, at least, it shouldn't.</div></div>
Setting aside the rest (either because I agree with your point or because it's not super relevant), having Marner would likely do far more for you than having Jones, both next season and moving forward.
If you're alluding to some inner team/management aspect I'm unaware of, cool. Based solely on what works best for them, ehh... don't agree on that part at all.
But it's not like my mission is to help the Hawks, man. I'd settle for giving Toronto AGMers a new obsession. :cool

Marner
I mean - no law against posting trades but 🤦🏻. Why would either team do this? Why would Marner waive to join a rebuilding team (in a contract year)? Why would Marner agree to waive and then extend in Anaheim? Why would a rebuilding team move assets for a player like Marner when they are far from competitive window? I could keep going but… you get the message

Why would the Leafs do this? Other than to change things up? Marner is younger & better than Seguin and has one year left vs three. Ridiculous

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ryminister_92</b></div><div>Torts would love Marner..
Torts like his players to play 2 way hockey and defend as much as they create offence. He wanted the Sedins to block shots on the PK when they didn’t want to and weren’t good at it, Marner is actually willing to do it and does it well. The coach isn’t the issue - the issue is Marner won’t go to a bottom feeder</div></div>

Only thing about this trade is that we already have Minten and Holmberg who, although not as good (yet), could serve the same role as Roy would, while at a much lower cap hit. The progress Holmberg has made this season has given me hope that he can be a full-time reliable, all-situations 3C for us next year. I mean, he’s pretty much already playing that role for us in right now, and he certainly hasn’t looked out of place.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ryminister_92</b></div><div>Leafs likely don’t have interest in Maatta. They have better internal options and frankly Maatta isn’t the type of defender the team is looking for.
Likely takes more than that to get Ferraro. With Holl being a cap dump and offering nothing of value to San Jose it only increases the price - and a mediocre prospect and middle round picks aren’t enough for that.
You can probably get more for Fabbri than a couple late round picks - depth scoring like him are looked for by contending teams, just retain a bit on him and could probably get a 3rd or conditional 2nd</div></div>
The Maata one was just me trying to find a team who needs a steady defensive dman without actually doing any research lol. So Toronto could definitely not be interested, it was just the first one I thought of.
Ferraro is a really tough one for me to place trade value on. I know he logs big minutes on a reallyyyyy bad team so obviously his numbers won't be great, but is there a guarantee his numbers will be a lot better? Just tough for me to say he's worth a first, and he very well could be, I'll also admit here that I just don't quite know enough. So my thought for balance on this trade is, Albert johansson who is a steady B-Level D prospect and the second for Ferraro, and then the 4th and 7th to dump holl's cap.
As for Fabbri, I want to agree with you because I see that the same value there but I with the cap I've made here, they wouldn't be able to retain. So this would just have to be a cap dump.
I really appreciate your input on this!

Rossi Jiricek
There's a lot of domines that would need to fall in order for a trade like this to happen.
1. The Jackets think Jiricek's development is botched, or he's extremely unhappy (unlikely)
2. The Jackets think Rossi is a long-term upgrade on Sillinger, and can slot into the 2C Role where Silly becomes the long term 3C (possible)
3. Voronkov and Jenner go to the wing (likely)
4. The Jackets pick in the top 4 this year and select Levshunov, since Jiricek is the only RD in the system with top-pair potential, he wouldn't be available until another is in the system. (Unlikely, IMO).
5. Columbus is fine with taking another year to rebuild/retool since Levshunov isn't going to be NHL ready and Severson/Gudbranson/Boqvist aren't a top-pair defenseman. (unlikely management sees it that way)
Literally all of that would need to happen before this trade makes sense, otherwise we just keep Jiricek who's NHL-ready now. I'm not saying it's impossible, and I think there could be legs to the rumor, but a lot would need to fall into place first.
