Description
Honestly the long road trip to open the season and that 11 game winless streak killed them. They likely would be in the battle for a wild card spot with Washington or at the very least ahead of Columbus in points. Kyle Palmieri had a dreadful start; however, he has been better since coming back from injury. Anders Lee seems to have recovered from injury and is back to his normal scoring ways. Even Josh Bailey has been better although a lot of Islander fans still want him gone. Noah Dobson is only going to get better. A big mistake would be signing another old d man when u already have an old d man. Zdeno Chara and Andy Greene should not be on the same team if they were a contender. Maybe one of them is alright, but still that would mean your d is slower. If they don't have enough faith in Salo or Aho then try to sign Ben Chiarot or Ian Cole or maybe even someone like Robert Hagg. The current duo of Russian goalies is solid. Sorokin is the reason why this team is above .500 and is the starter. Varly has lost the starter job. but he still is a veteran that can play more games is needed. Kieffer Bellows has to get a full time roster spot which means someone has to go. Lee and Palmieri have NTC and Nelson and Pageau have M-NTC. Barzal for sure isn't going anywhere and neither is Wahlstrom. They just signed Clutterbuck and Parise so those two are most likely not getting traded. Cizakas due to the term of his contract probably doesn't get traded and Matt Martin due to poor play likely doesn't get traded. Ross Johnston should get a full time spot too in the bottom 6 (replacing Martin would be the best fit); however, if this forward group stays intact then he too is the odd man out. That leaves Josh Bailey and Anthony Beauvillier and the two most likely forwards to be traded. Beauvillier hasn't been as good this season although he has been better recently. Bailey pissed off many Islander fans when he passed when he should've shot and missed open nets; however, he too has been better recently. Beauvillier I believe is around the same age as Barzal (24-25ish) while Bailey is in his 30s. It would make sense to keep Beauvillier and trade Bailey but who wants Bailey?

I don't get this generations fascination with youth. The 2007-2008 "Stanley Cup Champion" Detroit Red Wings had 9 players above the age of 35, 2 of them were in their 40's. Age means absolutely nothing.

Def need some sort of LHD for depth. Young players have ups and downs.

Two of those players over 35 were still superstars and a lot of them were depth players who played very small roles. The game has changed since than and has gotten younger and faster. Currently the isles are on the same path as the San Jose Sharks, not good enough to make the playoffs and not bad enough to finish bottom 5. They are too old and too slow and Lou will likely make them even older next season

You're reaching from their 23 man playoff roster, 10 were under 30 years 3 were under 25, which leaves 13 above the age of 30. You're right though the game has changed the love taps these players get today weren't 2 minute minors back then.

Lou knows what the team needs, he admitted a defenseman would help, but other than that I can't see too much movement. I personally think this year was just a fluke from the drop of the puck and the team we've been watching the past couple weeks are the real Islanders.

Lou went into this past season with a 44 YO washed up defenseman as his 2LD. He’ll probably bring Ron Hainsey out of retirement next. This year wasn’t a fluke, it’s very easy to play how they’ve been over the last few weeks when there’s very little pressure. Next season it’s highly unlikely the isles make the playoffs

It's not so much the age as it is the speed. If Lou wants to go sign any 35+ players with wheels, go for it - but more often than not, the younger guys are quicker. Those Red Wings aren't really a good comp to me either because a)one of the old dudes you're talking about is arguably the best defenseman in NHL history; b)they really didn't face a ton of opposition until the Final that year (seriously, the goalies on the Western teams they beat were Dan Ellis, Jose Theodore, & Marty Turco); and c)the under-35 supporting cast featured 2 borderline HoFers in Datsyuk & Zetterberg. This Islanders team has no duo that can currently operate at that level.
