Vegas trade and possible deadline
No need for McD wingers, Hyman and Pulju fit well. Oil are more in need of another solid bottom 6C, or a big defensive LD to pair with Barrie.

Not my fav either. But if he's on a roll, I can see him in there, combined with the reality he DID get a team to a cup more recently than any other Canadian goalie. Must play into the deciding management's thoughts.

Only concern on this team rn - need some hot goaltenders. Fleury should be there as one of them no matter what, but playing in Chicago isn't a big preparation help. Binnington and Hart are off to the beat starts for Canadian goalies it looks like, I bet one of them is on there if they keep it up.

contract comparable team
I take it you're comparing Schenn to the Turris buyout in Nashville. In EDM he makes the 1.65 mil. If you're doing that, then I guess Neal's comparable needs to be the 5.75?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Timmah007</b></div><div>I like the look of it on paper but 20 man roster is going to be tough to run with.</div></div>
Key variables look to be:
-Keith retirement possibility
-Barrie and/or Kass having decent years but being unnecessary (Due to Bouchard and a combination of Foegele and Holloway for the 3rd line)
-How well Yamo plays determining if he merits much of a raise
-and the final wildcard of Klefbom (I would have to think extremely unlikely he comes back, but who knows)
A Keith retirement and a trade of one of Kass/Barrie would allow some really good pieces at Goal and shut down D to be added. But going to need to get lucky to avoid a pinch on the cap for sure.

Why do I find the fact he has signed two fairly long term deals at about 1 mil per so funny. Just such a one of a kind deal. Good for him though, nice stability rare for guys at that cap hit.

I love Hertl but Edmonton just doesn't need to be spending these sorts of assets on high end forwards. That is pretty clearly not Edmonton's biggest need. Need another shut down Dman or a goalie with a good recent playoff resume at deadline if any big moves are made. Just my two cents on the Oil side of things.

There are like 5 of those in the league lol. Tarasenko at full power was a beast. Idk if there will be anyone that good that you don't pay an insane price on.

I guess Rickard Rakell? He's a UFA in the summer, RH shot, but I think plays any forward position really. He's had some quieter years recently but could be a good get for not too huge a cap hit.

As far as I understand, no. I forget if it's due to amount of games played, or another detail, but he is not eligible for the Calder from what I have read.

Not sure if there is a need for injured players to be able to recover to make this roster. If not, Klefbom can go in there! But he may never play again so...

I'd think the Ducks would want to know what is happening with impending UFA Lindholm before sending Fowler anywhere. They may be rebuilding, but potentially losing both of their best LHD in short succession doesn't help anyone there.

Big name center ideas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>Cool. If Malkin ever gets healthy, Pit is over the cap. Do you want anybody back?
He doesn't have to be good. Just cheaper and better than the other reasonably available top-six center options. Because it's so early in the year, almost every team thinks they can make the playoffs, and nobody wants to trade a top six center. Strome is a healthy scratch on one of the worst teams in the West. Schmaltz is -7 with 0 points in three games, on another one of them.
Crosby is expected back soon, so it's a short term need. Turris doesn't have to be a real top six center. He just has to pass the puck back to Guentzel or Kapanen, if they give it to him, and let them do the rest. Can he still pass accurately?</div></div>
He's not good enough to be a bottom 6 C right now, let alone a stand-in top 6. Definitely not quick enough skating and skills wise to make things happen for top 6 wingers. Just surviving on the Oil 4RW against really easy comp for 9 mins a night. Would be better off just putting Evan Rodrigues at C. Strome makes a lot of sense as a buy low option though

You can have Turris if you think he'll work at C (hint: he won't, he's only effective as a winger now). But his cap is not an issue, he cost like 500k when waived. So a decent goalie prospect like Konovalov isn't going anywhere here.

Team Canada WJC Long List
Likely a long shot with the immense talent up front, but I'm excited to see if Xavier Bourgeault can push for a spot. He looked really dynamic in the Oilers' camp and is off to a hot start (7gp, 6g 6a 12p) in Shawinigan. He should be able to challenge Evangelista and Wiesblatt at 3-4RW on this list, for example.
Edit: RIP ME HE IS AT C I SEE IT NOW. Was looking for the Oilers logo on RW only, forgot he's playing C at junior level 😂
Edit 2: but, how about Carter Savoie? More rare to have college players on a Canadian squad, but 11 points in first 4 games...not too shabby.

Martinez just got 5.25 per on a 3 year deal at 34 years old, Letang is just a bit older and for sure merits more. On a 2 year like this I don't see how he comes in anywhere under 6 mil without very specific personal reasons for a discount, which I'd think would be most likely staying in Pitt.

Rebuilding the D-Core
Keith-Ceci have truly been great in 18-20 mins of play these first few games. Might not always be that way, but I think they will be fine in that role most games this season. Nurse-Bouchard looks like it'll be a regular thing sooner than later, and a good top pairing. For me, the key is getting a good defensive D partner for Barrie on the left side (could be Samorukov sooner than later), or trying to trade Barrie later this season or next season for a more defensive Dman if Bouchard shows really good consistency on a pairing with Nurse.
Barrie will soon be a bit redundant with Bouch, but a guy coming off top points for D is still enticing to some GM for foolish "shiney prize" reasons, I'm sure. Enticing enough to get a decent 4-5 level shut down D in exchange from a team with a struggling powerplay.

Do you want to attempt to deal with cap issues in a trade here or?
I would think Vegas needs to find a way to dump Dadonov or Smith in such a deal to make it work in any possible way.

Smarter Lines and Pairings
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mk458</b></div><div>I like it. But if Ceci is playing with Nurse he'll get too many minutes. Ceci throughout his career has thrived in low usage, and performed poorly when he plays too much. Unfortunately I don't think that defensive pairing will work for that reason. I don't think the coaching staff has enough faith in him to play him that much either</div></div>
Same here! I like Ceci-Keith so far in that the minutes for both (18-19) make sense. They complement well too, Ceci with good straight away speed/on the rush passing, but crappy lateral abilities, and Keith with great laterals, but a step lost when he skates up ice with the puck.
Bouch is far more ready for the 20+ mins. I want to see him there soon. I also think once he's ready, Samorukov will be the perfect partner for Barrie 5v5 late this season/next year.

YOUNGER and FASTER CAPS
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>If he lost the starter's job - which is the whole basis for this AGM - then he simply doesn't have much value. Backup goalies just don't ever command a 1st or a top-6 winger. You can pick them up for fairly cheap.
Also, in 19-20 Samsonov played just 26 games and posted a .913 sv% - hardly groundbreaking numbers. Mikko Koskinen did much better that year, posting .917 in 38 games.</div></div>
By middling, I mean Yamo still producing at sub .5 ppg like last season. If that happens, we'd have to be honest he's not performing as a top 6 winger.
And hey of Koskinen gets back to .917 somehow, we should be resigning him. No qualms there! But, if that doesn't happen, which it likely won't, a new, young tender with Smith is needed.
Who knows exact cost at this point, so far out. I think I'll just be keeping my eye on Washington's two young goalies as good targets through this season into next.

YOUNGER and FASTER CAPS
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rpain</b></div><div>That's my thoughts. Especially since this is based on the assumption Vanecek wins the battle to be the starter, teams won't be lining up with a 1st to trade for the guy who didn't win the job. Different when it's a disgruntled starter or an up and comer blocked by a clear #1 which this is not the case.</div></div>
I mean if he repeats last season's results he doesn't merit a 1st you're right. If he returns to rookie numbers, and Vanecek is still pushing ahead, it could make sense.
If he repeats last season, and Yamo's results are middling still, I wonder if there might be a swap there.

If Vanecek overtakes Samsonov and Wash needs assets elsewhere, I can see the Oil being very interested in using their 1st for this. Also possible Yamamoto could be involved in such a deal I bet, Oil will soon have a lot of winger depth with bigger and skilled wingers arriving soon (Holloway, Lavoie, Savoie etc).

Giroux
No clue if Giroux has an interest in leaving the Flyers, but if Ottawa surprises and at least keeps pace with meaningful games later into the season, he'd be the perfect vet star player to bring in to turn the corner to playoffs. As a franco-Ontarian maybe he'd have some interest in coming. Not sure he would if offered a similar deal to stay with the Flyers or go to a team ready to definitely win now.
