An aggressive kyle dubas
That Drouin contract is ugly, he gets the Duclair treatment of 1 year contracts until he proves he's able to hold a stable position, can't see any team devoting 3 years to a guy who's been 50/50 locker room and his mom's basement.
That Orlov deal is overly generous, he should be had in the 5.5 range.
This is looking more and more like Leafs 2.0 style cap management.

Gorton and Hughes should be insta-fired if they dump the 5th OA pick this year, and Dach (on a really team friendly contract) and one of their only RHD prospects for Dubois who could be had for free next summer.
Not sure Philly ships Hart.

Tearing apart your team, and known performer for a "IF" scenario is terrible risk management.
Again, Matthews disappears in the playoffs, Rantanen doesn't.

Cool, so 1 year, then Matthews demands $15M and he's gone.
Also, Rantanen is a gamer, guy actually performs in the playoffs, this team would dominate the regular season, but fizzle in the playoffs.

Who are these prospects? There's developing into NHL stars, and there's plugging a hole in a lineup.... not many of the pieces with the Marlies have the potential to turn into 250 game NHL-ers, despite not having open spaces due to poor cap management.
The organizational depth is not there, they are thin at every position.

Breaking up the core 4
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LegendaryMyGuy</b></div><div>If you are trading Matthews for guys like Durzi, Byfield, Clarke and Turcotte and some picks or a similar package your window to "win now" has undoubtedly closed with no true foresight on how long it will take to contend again. Turcotte and Clark are effectively nothing right now, Durzi has struggled and does not look like more than a fringe top 4 and Byfield has been solid but he's not Auston Matthews. If this is the return for a guy at his worst is an 85 point two way center you might as well prep for the tank again and move off Marner and Nylander as well</div></div>
All a matter of perspective I guess.
5-7 years of trying to run the same roster to no avail, no legitimate cap room to sign existing UFA/RFA's (Bunting, Acciari, O'Reilly, Kerfoot, Kampf, Samsonov, Schenn, Holl, Gustafsson) and no real solid prospects in the system to replace those guys on ELC's
Their window is all but closed at this point.
The question shouldn't be, "can they win a cup next year with the same roster who's failed the previous 5 years to piece together any manageable run?", it should be "How do they ensure they come out of this with pieces in place to not take a step back with upcoming teams with solid prospect pools like Detroit, Ottawa or Montreal"
a roster of
Knies - Tavares - Nylander
Bunting - O'Reilly - Marner
Robertson - Byfield - Acciari
Jarnkrok - Kampf - Lafferty
Likely has a better chance at performing than the current roster, meanwhile stocking the system with a few pieces ie. Turcotte/Clarke or whatever 1st rd picks they get.
Obviously it doesn't have to be LA, but the question remains the same, can they afford to take the chance of losing people for nothing, or getting limited by NMC.... because that scenario would be 1000x worse than the one proposed.

Breaking up the core 4
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LegendaryMyGuy</b></div><div>The prospect of Matthews leaving if Marner is traded is definitely one to consider and raises a lot of concern. To your point of shopping Matthews, you would be hard pressed to find a destination in which A. Matthews signs long term and B. That destination having a package to equal the value of a guy like Matthews. Nylander will be undervalued and won't be a player you could trade comfortably and walk away thinking you won that deal. Marner is the only viable option in terms of value he could possibly bring in. The situation here in Toronto is definitely not pretty</div></div>
To the point A - I think Leafs management should talk to Matthews and see what destinations he's interested in, allow the teams and his agent to talk and come to a contract before the trade occurs.
To the point B - Not having to overpay in free agency as a bidding war can be an advantage, and deal with existing contracts (like Calgary having to pay to ship Monahan) could be a positive for both teams, I still think LA would be a good fit, with guys like Durzi-Byfield-Clarke-Turcotte etc... and some picks. Doesn't really affect LA's core, but they get better by trading away futures.
Definitely could be interesting.

I don't think Marner should be the guy that gets moved.
Matthews as an unknown for re-signing is more of a risk, imagine trading away Marner, and pissing off Matthews and he leaves for nothing, two superstars gone for the price of one.
Marner at least is controlled for 2 years, success with a new grouping could encourage him to stay.

None of those 3 make sense.
Seattle isn't dumping anyone, they are not going to make drastic changes after the success they had.
Calgary is going to be cap strapped, and with Sutter gone, Pelletier and Zary will likely get more opportunities, dumping $10M onto Marner won't make them better.
Chicago isn't going to try and rush a rebuild, they need a full rebuild

Samsonov was literally not the problem for the Leafs.
Can't see Seattle dumping their future #1 C for another winger.
This is too heavily biased towards Toronto.

Nylander's has a low cap hit, scores more goals, doesn't own a NMC and is ready for new contract talk.
But Leaf fans are jumping at news articles stating big trade move coming, similar to the Flames/Panthers trade from last summer.</div></div>
I think Nylander has a better chance at re-signing than Matthews does in Toronto.
IMO, smart move is trade Matthews for young high end prospects and picks, sign O'Reilly to a 3-4 year deal in the $5M range, re-sign Nylander for $2M more and start stocking the system full of young talent, you need ELC's to compete in the NHL now.

All these Marner trades, he was arguably the best player in the playoffs.
For once, goaltending was not even a hint of a problem for the Leafs, yet everyone is dumping Samsonov.
Defense disappearing, Liljegren was awful, Brodie was terrible, and Matthews and Tavares being invisible while eating $22M in cap room was the problem.

Obviously to a rental team, like Winnipeg, Buffalo, Columbus, etc, he would jettison by the following summer.

I agree.....
And Matthews doesn't waive for Buffalo.... so, it's likely a non-starter.

Again, a contract is 2-sided.
The Leafs will try.
Most likely Matthews wants out.... the Leafs fans should remember what happened with Sundin to know that possibly losing a top-end piece for nothing is a bad way to continue the teams growth, and if Matthews most likely wants out, then it's really not worth taking the chance to lose him for nothing, try and get some assets in return to make the departure less painful.
It's risk assessment 101.

Marner was literally the best player this whole playoffs, with Willy being second best.
Matthews needs to go, and they need to get a solid haul for him. (L.A. for Byfield, Kempe, Clarke, and a 2026 1st rd or some mix along those lines), re-sign O'Reilly to stop gap and free up some cap room for the future.

Extending him is not up to the Leafs, it's up to Matthews, most pundits think he wants out of the pressure cooker of Toronto, especially if his next deal is $13M+ he knows he'll constantly be under the scrutiny of the media and fans, better to take that in L.A. or Arizona where you can fly under the radar and not deal with the winters of Canada.

1) that Matthews trade is awful return for the leafs, sure he disappeared offensively in the 2nd round (probably from confusion of not knowing there was even a 2nd round) Any Matthews trade there starts with either Cozens or Thompson.
2) Matthews wants the spotlight, the big city, I highly doubt he waives for Buffalo.

As much as Habs fans love to isht on Gallagher, Anderson, Dach is looking more and more like he might be a long term winger, and there's players who stood out at the last camp, Heineman, Mesar, Roy, and whether Tuch or Kapanen pan out.
Montreal is definitely not lacking for wingers, current or prospect depth.
And then there's 2x 1st round picks this year, so, who knows what they get.
Laf hasn't earned more than the third line minutes he gets, sticking him in Montreal is basically re-doing the Drouin option, of trying to get a talented young french speaker and if/when he fizzles out, they can repeat it again... not worth it.

This offersheet is less (and therefore less likely to work) however MTL has so much cap space heading into next season that they would still have over $10M after this deal with a Hoffman buyout.</div></div>

Real world, Laf would be offered a $4.2M on a 1 year term, but that sets his QO the following year.
Laf is likely moving into bust territory soon, and having him as an RFA for 1 year, then having to pay him again $4.2M might not be worth it, especially given Montreal's 2nd rd pick could very well be 33 to 40.
Can't see any NHL GM making a move to waste $8-9M in hard cash of their owners without showing any appreciable growth in the standings or playoff revenues.
Also, Montreal is a terrible fit, given how stacked they are on the wings.
