I think Backes not working out was predictable.

Let's go back to the 2016 FA class shall we?

Who were the top free agents that year? Loui Eriksson, David Backes, Milan Lucic, Troy Brouwer, Andrew Ladd, Kyle Okposo and Frans Nielsen... what do most of these players have in common? Most of them play a physical style of hockey, especially Okposo, Lucic and Backes.

But around 2015-2017, hockey changed. It went from a defensive, physical minded game to a offensive, fast minded game. I don't know if what provoked that change was the arrival of youngsters like McDavid, Eichel, Matthews, Marner, Laine, Pastrnak and so many others or the Pens winning 2 straight cups with a d-core below average (especially in 2017 without Letang) but hockey truly changed. Maybe it was a combination of both, who knows? So basically, those players signed exactly at the wrong moment. Had they signed 2-3 years before 2016, they would've been fine. But 2016 was too late. Lucic has one great year in EDM then he floped. Nielsen had 2 ok seasons with DET and then flopped. He's a 4C at this point. Eriksson flopped from the moment he stepped on the ice as a Canuck. Ladd never fitted well with NYI. Backes was a good 3rd liner for 2-3 years but he failed at being a good 2nd line checking forward, Okposo was a good 2nd liner for 2 seasons but now he's a 4th liner and Brouwer was bought out after the 2nd year of his contract and now, at best he's a 13th foeward.
